JR's 'Spare-wheel' story ....

which Ranil spoke of

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasingha has mentioned at a meeting held in Matara recently that he was the person whom JR had had kept as his 'spare-wheel' of the UNP. The Prime Minister who said that President J.R. Jayawardene had
compared the future leadership of the United National Party to a three-wheeler and had nominated Premadasa for the leadership while naming Gamini, Lalith as backbenchers; he himself was reserved as a 'spare-wheel'. After that he said, at the end the wheels on the two sides had come off and once the air of the front-wheel was released, it was he who pulled along the Party for a period of 20 years and that it nevertheless was a kind of Guinness Record. He mentioned these ideas at the meeting of various political dignitaries of the South attached to the United National Party, at the Sanasa Hall at Nupe Junction recently:

"We have been able to secure ruling-power after 11 years and have been able to walk along a background with a fresh environment. After President J.R. Jayawardene came into leadership of the United National Party in 1973 and became the leader of the country in 1977, he brought about a development in the country. Subsequently, in order to take the United National Party forward he established groups of a second class, third class and so on. He did that after thinking far ahead. After President J.R. Jayawardene he nominated Prime Minister Ranasingha Premadasa for leadership. As backbenchers he named Mr. Gamini Dissanayaka and Mr. Lalith Athulathmudali. I was reserved as a 'spare-wheel'.

Finally when the wheels on the two sides got removed, our President Ranasingha Premadasa's wheel was disinflated. The Party was dragged along for 20 years by the 'spare-wheel'. I'd like to say that it was a Guinness Record too".

Jackson trying to shoot tele at Ratnapura Saman Devala ....

abandons shooting because of protest

An incident was reported yesterday of a case where popular film and tele-creator Jackson Anthony had gone to start shooting of a teledrama at the historic Saman Devale where people in the area had protested against it and ultimately he has had to
abandon it.

The reason for this protest was that the lower compound of Saman Devala in Ratnapura was utilised for shooting of the teledrama called Sigiri Kashyapa which incidentally happened to be given a distorted outlook. The group attending to Jackson's Tele-background creations had anticipated making arrangements by portraying this location as the point of access to the palace of King Kashyapa and were fixing the background equipment suitable to give a royal outlook.

On that occasion the Kapumathas of Saman Devale had got together with the masses and questioned as to what was going to be done. They had expressed their displeasure about making use of adopting various changes in that land for the creations by distorting the natural look of the Saman Devale and that permission could be given if no changes are effected in the natural outlook.

However, the requirement of Jackson and his group was to portray it as a portion of the palace of King Kashyapa and had said that those changes were essential for such a purpose. It was after that the Kapumahathas had approached the Ratnapura MP Mr. A.A. Wijeytunga by bringing forward their protest. They had found on further inquiry that no previous permission had been obtained for a creation such as this at Saman Devale which in fact is a reserved location belonging to the Archaeological Department. The MP Wijeytunga had then arrived at the location meant for shooting of the teledrama and discussed about this conflict after which Jackson and his group had given up shooting and had left the place, it was reported.

Ailing Sicille comes in wheelchair ....

remanded again without bail

Sicille Priya Kamini Kotelawala the sixth defendant of the law suit filed against whom there are 91 allegations including misappropriation of a sum of money exceeding Rs. 720 crores deposited with Golden Key Credit Card Company, came to courts yesterday in a wheelchair.

She was noticed by the eagle-eyed police when she came to Sri Lanka after hiding overseas and was taken into
custody and within just a few hours after that she had to seek the support of a wheelchair, having felt sick all of a sudden. She came to courts in that condition yesterday and Mr. Manilal Waidyathillaka, Colombo High Court Judge ordered that she be remanded till April 27th. The Judge issued this order having rejected the request to grant her bail on the appeal made on behalf of the defendant. The High Court who considered the appeal made by Mr. Saliya Peiris, Attorney-at-Law appearing on behalf of the defendant had ordered that she be produced to High Courts last 16th. As such, the defendant who at present is presently undergoing treatment at the National Hospital was brought to courts complex in an ambulance by prison officials and steps were taken to admit her to the courtroom in a wheelchair.

Senior Attorney-at-Law Mr. Saliya Peiris who placed the relevant facts in the presence of the courts on behalf of the defendant said that his client though had gone to England on 28th December 2008 for purposes of taking treatment had once again returned to Sri Lanka in an indisposed condition. The defendant's Lawyer then requested that she be released under a suitable bail condition as she who is currently suffering from a severe heart ailment and mentally sick condition and under such conditions she would under no circumstances stay away from courts in future. State Counsel Mr. Dilan Ratnayaka who appeared on behalf of the Attorney General pointed out that even after the case commenced, the defendant had been someone who had been avoiding courts for a period of over four years and for that very reason he strictly opposed she being released on bail.

Mr. Jaliya Samarasingha who appeared on behalf of the prejudiced depositors pointed out that it is the depositors of the Company who are prone to mental pressure and not the defendant, thereby appealing to courts to refrain from granting her bail. The Judge who considered points brought forward by all parties pointed out through his decree that since it is revealed that the defendant is the wife of Lalith Kotelawala the latter of whom is the main shareholder of Golden Key Credit Card Company and that she is a main shareholder of that Company, his court under such circumstances decide not to grant her bail.

Stocks of Mars and Snicker chocolates ....

out from market!

The American Mars Company has decided to recall a stock of Mars and Snickers Chocolates distributed in 55 countries including Sri Lanka. The reason behind the decision is that pieces of
plastic had been found with Snickers chocolates from the Netherlands production centre.

The chocolate-type known as Snickers is a Mars product where chocolate is applied or spread on biscuit flakes and which provides a wonderful taste. What was mentioned in a complaint made by a consumer of The Netherlands last January is that there were several plastic pieces in a certain chocolate bar of a Snickers product. While it was confirmed after examination too, the Company accepted responsibility for the blunder.

Subsequently in order to preserve their goodwill and to confirm the quality The Netherlands factory of that Company had decided to once more recall not only Snickers distributed all over the world by the Netherlands factory but even all chocolates bearing all other names.
Mars Company is one of the largest food production Companies in the world, drawing an annual income of 33 billion dollars food items under 29 trade names, to the market including Milkway, M and M, Galaxy, Dolmio Sauce and Fedigree while their parent Company is situated in America.

Though the said stocks are recalled they would still be continuing the process of distribution in the previously stated countries and would be distributing fresh stocks.
