If mud was thrown at President's speeches it was 'White' vans then - Maithripala

Participating in a new water project in MahaOya on the morning of the 19th instant, the President had this to say:-
" In order to develop this country like money and resources are needed it is necessary for the people to be given freedom and democracy. This government has the pave the way for it.
We during this period for criticizing the government have not sent white vans.By quoting to my speech made last week at the foundation institute various talks had been made.I know about them.I
wish to ask those who criticized whether there were any persons who could have done so before the 08th January 2015.Were these words and language language spoken then? In that case within 24 hours they would have  got white vans. Before I became President no one could take a telephone call as the calls were tapped. Now people had freedom. Those people have forgotten.I could remember that even a provincial council member do not speak to another member.A Minister does not speak to another Minister over the phone. We had such a period..That period was what we ended.
When they ask what have you done my answer to them is I have given them the freedom.Freedom is more important than money. If the protest walks, clamours and what is shown in the internet  were made they know the reply they would get.In this contest I am very happy as the freedom is been happily possessed by the people. Those who attack me are those who have not studied the facts. It is because they have become one sided.

'Usaviya Nihandai' court censorship prohibited - free publicity

Though a censorship order was given on public screening over the film 'Usaviya Nihandai' directed by well-known cinematographer Prasanna Withanage, as a result of a case filed by a former judge on the understanding that the story in the said film includes his own story, the censorship was called off today.

Attorneys-at-law who appeared for Mr. Prasanna Withanage the respondent and 6 others in the presence of Colombo District Judge Mr. M.U. Gunawardena had presented the necessary points at length for a period of close upon 2 hours, having taken into consideration the sanction given by the Public Performance Board at cinema halls for public screening and the censorship which was in force
for only 16 days was taken off. Many years ago the Ravaya Newspaper exposed 2 incidents where former Magistrate Lenin Ratnayaka had during his tenure at courts in order to grant bail to prisoners whom he had imprisoned had in the meantime gone to bed with wives of the said prisoners by force and during the time those cases were being being heard, since this was a legal case against a judge himself, justice was not carried out in the case of the victimised party and they were subjected to various pressure and influence.

At a time the film based and produced on these happenings did not draw much publicity, Lenin Ratnayaka the former judge came forward saying that it referred to him and then proceeded to file action against this cinematic creation. As a result of his action what transpired was that a large section of the public came to know about this incident and on the other hand the publicity gained indirectly under those circumstances reached its apex. As such, the 'Usaviya Nihandai' film which was censored from screening had once again received the opportunity to be released to the public from today the 21st.

Two campus students in Jaffna supposed to have died from police gun shots - Duties of five from Police suspended

Investigations are closing upon evidence that the two university students who were travelling on a motor cycle last night in Kankasanthurai had died as a result of police gun shots.

At present the Government Information Department say that 5 police officers have been taken into custody on suspicion regarding the incident and their duties have been suspended. What the Police Media Spokesman Office told this morning was that the deaths have occured with the motor cycle on which these students had been travelling after having struck a wall. However subsequent
investigations revealed that it was a woven up story by officers who were on duty there at that time.

The two deceased students are Nadaraja Kajan of the Political Faculty and Puwanraja Sulakshan Kandarodai attached to Mass Media. It is revealed from unofficial information streaming in that the deceased had around 11.30 in the night on Thursday had been riding the motor cycle towards Kokuvil and that when the police ordered them to stop the bike had proceeded without heeding police orders. Unofficial news further say that under the above conditions the police had fired at the motor cycle and simultaneously the motor cycle had struck a wall of a house nearby and thus met with this accident.

Jaffna Magistrate Mr. S. Sathishkaran had visited the scene of the accident and conducted the autopsy while the hospital Judicial Medical Officer who held the post-mortem said was that the rider of the motor cycle had sustained two gun shots on his head and that the accident had taken place because he had been unable to control the motor cycle and though the pillion-rider had not received any gun shots he had died because of injured sustained from the accident. When the police had attempted to interpret the incident as a normal incident, neighbours had created a commotion saying, "No ... no we heard gunfire!" For this reason the investigations have been handed over to the CID. Campus students of Jaffna have asked that an impartial inquiry be conducted and information is received that the Human Rights Commission too have launched an investigation.

Shortage of drugs all over the island after enforcing control price - not even Panadol

Shortage of drugs all over the island after enforcing control price - not even Panadol

As a consequence of the control price of 48 groups of essential drugs which has taken effect on the gazette paper issued by the government last midnight, a shortage of drugs is to be seen at pharmacies all over the island today.

The reason for this shortage is that the relevant drugs cannot be sold at the stipulated control price and as a result traders are refraining from selling those. For example, the control price states that Paracetomol has to be sold at Rs. 1.30 and therefore Panadol which comes under the family of Paracetomol too has to be sold at the same price while the relevant companies have sold the said drug at a price above 1.30 and under such circumstances there is a severe demand for Paracetomol which is a locally produced drug and pharmacies able to sell only those, resort to selling Paracetomol only
while other pharmacies have refrained from it. On an inquiry made by us from Union Chemists, a leading pharmacy in the capital what they say is that under the existing conditions it is not possible to trade in reputed trade names of essential drug items in future and it would not be possible to comply with customers demanding the 'brand' they ask for.

Because of the said price control a certain section of the public is benefited while certain well-known names appear to disappear from Sri Lanka. A few days before this what the Health Minister announced was that when doctors writing out prescriptions they should be free from the tradition of writing out the trade name.

Attack on Jaffna Intelligence Unit officers ... not a 'Return'

Two days after the 2 campus students in Jaffna died from police gunfire some days back, 2 government Intelligence Unit officers (SIS) dressed in civil clothes who were riding a motor bicycle were subjected to a sword attack today (23) in Chunnakam, Jaffna. Nimal Bandara and P.S. Navaratna who sustained injuries from this attack have been admitted
to Jaffna Teaching Hospital and hospital sources have said that their condition is not that serious.

The said attack has been launched by a clique known as 'Kadu gansia' (sword gang) who are involved in looting in Jaffna according to latest information received. It has been interpreted elsewhere that this incident is a 'Return' given because of the incident where the university students were killed and this incident also took place close to each other. However, a senior police officer emphasised that this incident was not committed as a result of a group of people who were angered because of the deaths of the two students who died from police gunshots in Jaffna.

The aforesaid attack has been made by 2 gangsters who had come on a motor cycle with no number-plates after looting a textile shop in Chunnakam, Jaffna. As the 2 police officers had closed in upon the place of looting at the time the looting was in operation, they had become victims of this attack. This 'kadu gansia' of Jaffna have been reputed to be involved in daily looting sprees during the past, it was reported and other than this isolated incident in Chunnakam, there is no other state of commotion anywhere else, police say.

Inquiry for ambulance driver who goes to get his coconut husked ... leaving patient in ambulance!

Inquiry for ambulance driver who goes to get his coconut husked ... leaving patient in ambulance!

An inquiry is presently underway in connection with an incident where the driver of an ambulance who had been transporting a patient needing urgent treatment to the Ratnapura General Hospital from Embilipitiya District Hospital some days ago had in the process of the journey had stopped near a coconut-seller's shop
and had engaged in a private activity of husking coconuts, forgetting the patient inside the ambulance.

Information about this was reported by the son of the patient who incidentally happened to be by the side of the said patient inside the ambulance across the video he had recorded from his mobile phone.  The scenes which he had recorded were later released to the social media and after lakhs of people had viewed it, the Sabaragamuwa Province Health Ministry came to know about this and had made inquiries about the driver concerned. It is clearly depicted in the video that the driver had no inclination or thoughts of rescuing the patient when the latter was being transported. He had been wasting his time by selecting coconuts and had been spending his time having a chat with those in the shop till the coconuts were husked and finished. Even the attendant who escorted him keeps watching the scene as if these things are common occurences to him.

When investigating the background of this driver who is affiliated to Embilipitiya District Hospital it was found that on previous occasions too he had been subjected to allegations of others over similar incidents; but because there was no strong evidence available he had managed to get away, it was reported. However, because of the concrete evidence of this video things had misfired for him. The Sabaragamuwa Health Ministry which went into immediate action in this instance had given him a transfer and an inquiry is underway. On the forthcoming results, there is a probability that in the future there is a likelihood that his services would be suspended, it is reported. The video concerned, from below
