If the new tax is not changed Gemunu to launch a huge bus strike
The Chairman of the private bus owners association Gemunu Wijeratne wants the increased charge for the fume test and the tax imposed on the ownership of buses which were increased by the budget proposals be lowered in two weeks time. Otherwise he had vowed that he would give the leadership to commence a huge strike of private buses.
His defence for this proposed strike is that this matter was not discussed with the private bus operators unions. Gemunu Wijeratne had further added that the government vehicles have been given a waive off from this charge while the private vehicle owners have to pay a sum od Rs 5000.-,while the bus owners a sum of Rs 10,000/- for owner ship and Rs 15000/-as for the private vehicle ownership charges. These according to him is very unreasonable.
In this regard the Chairman of the private bus owners association would be handing over a letter to the Ministry if Finance on the 23rd instant. If there is no response he would be discussing with all other unions and associations in the private bus sector to arrive at a decision to commence a strike within two weeks time.
