How former MP who made teacher kneel down ....

became Chief Guest at sports meet festival in same school!

Former MP Mr. Ananda Kumara of the the North West Provincial Council who became a notorious figure and was found guilty by courts for having compelled a lady teacher in
Anamaduwa area some years before this and because of the humiliation he was faced with, was also deprived of nominations for elections too.

When circumstances were such, the fact that the present Principal of that very school had invited him as the Chief Guest for the 2016 year-ending sports festival day-before-yesterday was subjected to debate. After Mrs. Susila Herath who was a teacher of Navodya School of Nawagaththegama, Anamaduwa left the school after the incident of kneeling down, the Principal of the school at that time too had got a transfer. Neither she nor the said Principal were to be seen at day-before-yesterday's festival. The aforesaid incident had earlier created an uproar because the former MP had lost his temper over an incident where his daughter studying in the same school was reprimanded provoking Mr. Ananda Kumara to take action to make Mrs. Susila Herath kneel down.

Mr. Ananda Kumara who arrived on the invitation of the staff headed by the incumbent of the school Mr. Malcom Peterson, was welcomed at the main entrance of the school in grand style by the Principal and was garlanded by the children with an offering of a sheaf of betel and was even honoured by being worshipped, it was reported.

With the arrival of the former MP, a crowd of Principals of neighbouring schools and some parents too who had received invitations had left the place by protesting, it was understood.

A report has been called to find out why the Member of PC who ordered a teacher to kneel down was invited for school sports meet

The Wayamba province education minister Sandya Kumara Rajapaksa had called explanation and a report  from the school authorities as to why a former member of the PS  Ananda Sarath Kumara who was convicted by courts for an offence was invited as one of the chief quests at the inter house sports meet at the Navodya Vidyalaya Nawagaththegama.

It should be brought to light  that the former member of the PS was penalised for the offence of ordering a teacher to kneel down and was punished in courts. The same person who was invited for the inter school sports meet of Navodya Vidyalaya Nawagaththtgama by the school authorities as a chief guest had been welcomed at the function and taken in a procession to the play ground with the beating of musical instruments of the school band.As the former member of PC was convicted in courts he was even deprived in contesting for the Wayamba province elections.

The education minister of Wayamba PC had pointed out that such a person to be invited and brought in a procession is itself a huge mistake. It had been pointed out by the education minister of the Wayamba PC that such a welcome note could be accorded to a person when the President, Prime Minister or the education Minister had participated in the ceremony only.

Tribute to driver who prevented trains going on same track

A ceremony of tribute appreciating the service of Mr. Anura Kumarasiri the driver of Rajarata Regina train who prevented an accident of two
express trains travelling on the same track at Galle, Ginthota Piyadigama railway station, was held at Kumbulwella, Galle.

Exactly at the moment when the Rajarata Regina train heading towards Vavuniya from Matara last January 28th had arrived at Galle Gintota Piyadigama railway station, the Express Train plying from Kandy to Matara had moved forward on the very same track that the other train was moving.

At that very moment the driver of the Rajarata Regina train had promptly used much effort and stopped his train. If not for that act, the two express trains moving head-on would definitely have collided face to face and it would have resulted in a severe disaster. Chairman of Kumbulwella Welfare Society, Mr. Thushan Wettasingha having valued the service performed by Mr. Anura Kumarasiri had awarded a souvenir to Mr. Kumarasiri on this occasion.

Derana Sankha's duties suspended for having compared ....

the singer who sang 'Danno Budunge' ....to a cat!

Sankha Amarajith of Derana Channel had made a criticism saying that singer Kishani Jayasingha who sang the song of 'Danno Budunge' in an
opera-style the day after last Independence Day Celebrations that she had rendered the song as if it was a female cat making the sound 'Meow'. This statement was made by him at a Rupavahini Newspaper Headlines programme. After he was subjected to reproach by the Prime Minister on this matter, his duties had been suspended by that channel, it is reported.

When a part of this song was broadcast on the morning programme of February 5th, this is what Sankha said: "Aren't such sounds heard? Now female cats who always say 'Meow .... meow' make sounds such as that in the night. Then what do we do .... don't we get hold of half a brick and fling it in that direction? What village-folk say is that it's unlucky, owlish. So that song called 'Danno Budunge' was considered as a very noble song, a Buddhist devotional song and an extremely virtuous song which lightened up the heart.

Starting from Mr. Amaradeva most male and female sang this song with great respect, devotion and with pious hearts. But it was at a ceremony said to have been held to commemorate the National Independence Day on February 4th that this song was distorted".

After this criticism Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasingha at a press meeting held yesterday had this to say: "I saw that day in Derana News the day after the National Day, that the song 'Danno Budunge' was sung .... that female singer was compared to a cat, making a sound. There is the right to speak out, to criticize. But can a lady be called a female cat over Rupavahini? Such things don't belong to those companies. Those broadcasting licences are given by the government. Those belong to the masses. A majority of the public in this country are females".

What Sankha spoke about was a female cat who says 'Meow'. What Ranil says is about a female cat. Whatever it is, after this incident Amarajith's duties at Derana have been suspended. It has still not been reported whether it is of a temporary or permanent nature. The criticism made by Sankha, from below

Story that the Lion is to be removed ....

from National Flag

Though the National Anthem was sung in Tamil Language at the last Independence Day Commemoration Celebrations and it was subjected to
criticism as well as praise from various corners, such comments had no sufficient matter in them to provoke any racist issue as such.

In the process, the new opinion that has surfaced these days is that since displaying the Lion on the national flag has been the root cause for racist problems, there is a rumour that the government is getting ready to dispose of that emblem. What is inferred by that idea is that the Lion would be removed from the national flag and instead for it to be replaced by a symbol depicting brotherhood among the public at large, in the national flag. However it is uncertain as to who had brought forward such a suggestion and from where such a rumour crept into the media. When enquiring further into this matter, what was reported was that there is a rumour that a proposal has cropped up that this particular amendment should be carried out at the new constitution in the future. It was also reported that when the committee to enquire into public opinion gathered together in respect of the new constitution for the second day at the Mannar District Secretariat office, it was supposed to have been forwarded to the relevant committee, it was reported.

This proposal had been put forward when officers including Messrs. Wijendran, Lal Wijeynayaka and S. Thavarasa of the committee to enquire into opinions of the public to prepare the constitution had assembled at the Mannar District Secretariat. A lady representative of the Mannar District Women's Organization expressing ideas in this respect said to the media that only the Sinhalese community is reflected by the emblem of the Lion in the national flag and that at present everybody lives with a sense of 'togetherness' and therefore an emblem that signifies or portrays and covers all races should be inserted where the national flag is concerned.

Whatever it is, this happens to be just one of those proposals only and no dialogue or approval has been still forthcoming in that connection.

because of a water monitor!

The root cause of this accident happens to be that a water monitor had come to the road close to the Pinnaduwa access of the Southern Expressway and in order to avoid the animal, one motorist had applied the brakes of the motor cycle which then resulted in the 5 vehicles that came behind  colliding with each other.

During this collision the monitor had slipped away and was not to be seen. Suicides increase by three times!

-- revealed by a survey

It has been revealed by a survey conducted that the suicide rate of young girls and boys of this country has increased three times more than previously, on Valentine's Day which fell on 14th
February.

What Consultant Dr. Asanga Wijeyratna of the Royal Council of the United Kingdom says is that various reasons such as a young girl being collectively raped, not being able to present a gift to her lover, not being able to face advice of the parents and breaking up of love affairs have contributed to suicides. He also mentioned that it is young people passing through the ages of 16 - 24 who have mostly been subjected to suicides in this manner.

In the same way, Dr. Wijeyratna said that the sale of condoms and birth control pills too had escalated eight times more on this day compared to other days according to a survey carried out across islandwide pharmacies. It is a speciality to observe that children who are pursuing studies at International Schools are the ones who have been motivated to make these purchases.

Dr. Wijeyratna stated that these youth who had visited abortion centres or doctors on the dates following February 14th were young boys and girls and that they were motivated to do so because of lack of a sound understanding about sex education.
