After Gamperaliya 'Bawa Tharanaya"( crossing of sansara) wins Delhi award




At the 4th Delhi International film festival the film 'Bawa Tharanaya" (Crossing of Sansara) written and directed by Devinda Kongahage was adjudges as the best film at the festival.


It was in the year 1963 the film "Gamperaliya" directed by Sir Lestor James Pieris received an award
at the Delhi International film festival.

In this film the main characters had been portrayed by Malani Fonseka, Sajeewa Rasaputra, Udayanthi Kulatunga, Roshan Pilapitiya, Mahendra Perera , Chandika Nanayakkara and a host of others.

This story had been taken from the novel written by  Professor Lona Devaraj on  upcountry throne.There had been many Tele drama scripts written based on this novel but this film had been the  debut  endeavour  of Devinda, also based on  a story written from this novel.

Consequent to a complaint made by the Police media spokesman to courts the advertisement
"Dadayam Batta" promoting a product of Soya meat in the television channels, the Fort magistrates court had issued an order to temporarily ban this advertisement in television channels.

Until the investigations in this regard are completed the Chairmen of  Hiru and Swarnavahini television channels have been barred from telecasting this particular advertisement on account of this court order issued by the Fort magistrates courts.

It is learnt that two persons had been deployed with  police uniforms  for this "Dadayam  Batta" advertisement without the permission of the police department. It is reported that this is an incident which brings disrepute to the police department and in this regard a compliant had been lodged at the Fort police station.

With the withdrawal of vehicle permits in the budget proposals for 2016 the government has decided to allow those Members of Parliament who do not have money to import vehicles to
purchase a vehicle via a term loan from Bank of Ceylon to be repaid in five years. The monthly instalment in that case to be recovered from the  monthly salary.

This had been decided at a meeting held at the parliament premises chaired by the Finance minister Ravi Karunanayake and the minister of parliamentary affairs Gayantha Karunatilleke.A number of Members of Parliament from both the government and the opposition had participated.

From the budget proposals 2016 the Members of Parliament who were earlier able to import duty free vehicles up to  rupees three hundred lakhs had been withdrawn.

In this connection the novice Members of Parliament had got displeased and a redress to them this proposal had been brought forward. In this connection a Member of Parliament could import any vehicle of their choice was emphasised by Minister Ravi Karunanayake.

In this regard when the Minister in charge of Parliamentary affairs is notified the type of vehicle a Member of Parliament needs , the Minister would make arrangements to pay the cost of the vehicle  at once or on a monthly basis.

Reports from  police headquarters have revealed that there is a strong government stranglehold that is constantly interfering with the investigations of the Wasim Thajudeen  murder. Hence the completion of the police investigations are been hampered and hence delayed.


It is further reported that the investigations into the mysterious death of rugby player Wasim
Thajudeen are been carried out amidst tremendous pressure exerted on them from many quarters.

It is further reported that several personnel who were involved in corrupt activities during the previous regime are still occupying their seats and hence their is tremendous pressure from them.

It has also been reported that certain body parts of Wasim Thajudeen that were preserved in a deep freezer in the office of the Judicial Medical Officer had also disappeared.

It is also reported that the police had not received corporation from a mobile company when details of certain telephone numbers were wanted.

However the police has reported that no sooner the courts  discloses the names of those involved with the murder they would arrest those found guilty.

The additional chief magistrate Nishantha Pieris on the 10th instant had added that the death of rugger player Wasim Thajudeen had not been owing to an accident. In this context he needs all reports and information to come give his verdict after a thorough scrutiny.

The VIP's who are convicted in courts for cheating and for various corrupt activities who on the pretext of numerous illnesses seek the  help of  various  persons to obtain bogus medical reports to allow them to be admitted to the National hospital Colombo after been in the prison hospital It has
been brought to the knowledge of the ministry of nutrition and indigenous medicine that a certain medical officer who charges a sum between rupees eight to fifteen  lakhs to make this possible.


These complaints have been made by some doctors in the prison hospital. This particular doctor attached to the Colombo national hospital it is learnt that had been in the past two years  given bogus medial reports like for hypertension ,heart ailments and various other ailments which the VIP's admitted to the prison hospital do not possess. By issuing incorrect diagnosis this doctor had been obtaining bribes to the tune of between rupees 6- 15 lakhs.

It is a practice that when a patient is transferred from one hospital to another the consent of the Director of the hospital is needed. In this case this particular doctor had flouted this requirement and had  transferred the VIP's on his own wish by taking bribes.

The Minister of western mega polis development Patali Champika Ranawaka had added in parliament that as a part of the mega polis development in the country bus and train stations would be brought to one place. Accordingly for a start this would begin at Makandura.


Under this development trains, private buses and CTB buses would all terminate and commence destinations from one common place and the commuters could select their mode of travel. The Kelani valley trains and  express highways would be connected to these places it has been suggested.
One intention would be to ease the congestion and for this purpose a sum of rupees 849.4 has been allocated. In the future by making the Colombo national hospital as the centre a scheme to benefit people is to be implemented.

The Member of Parliament for Kalutara district Palitha Thevarapperuma has been admitted to a private hospital for treatment of a wound sustained when  a thorny coconut shell had pierced though his left leg.

He had undergone surgery to his left leg and it is learnt that he is recovering fast.Owing to this illness the Member of parliament had not been able to attend parliamentary sessions for a couple of months.

During the past few months he has had to face a number of problems. As a result of the death of a son he had not been able to be present for the swearing in ceremony.

The other day Dayawathie of 'Kopi Kade' fame ,the popular actress Sushila Kottege had been hospitalised subsequent to a heart attack. This incident had been explained by her as follows:


She says that what happened to her could not be believed by her. But she feels that owing to merits she had accumulated she is lucky to be living. She had said that life is somewhat  very peculiar thing. One who was hail and hearty like a stone a week ago is now lying in a hospital bed.She had said that
in a short time she would come back to her earlier life and until such time she would remain calm in bed.

On the November 19 after two hectic days when she had to travel to far away places she had slept longer than usual as she had no particular assignment. In the afternoon as she has had dubbing and had got into the husband's vehicle. After travelling a short distance she had felt a severe pain on her back which after a short time had come towards her chest.She had felt that her chest and her back were getting crushed.

She had been twisting her body in severe pain and her husband too had got very scared. He wanted to get back home. As this dubbing was pre arranged and she never used to evade it as she never usually does wanted to attend to the dubbing. whatever happens to her.This was her intention as several others were waiting for her.

Her husband had wanted to go the Colombo national hospital. Then she had suggested to go and heir family doctor.Her husband had insisted that she be taken to the Colombo national hospital.However her husband had taken her to her family doctor Gunawardena.

There were a number of patients to see him. She had forced herself into the doctors room screaming.After examination the doctor had asked her to get admitted to  the closest hospital as her condition was very serious. She had been taken to the Fever hospital at IDH After initial treatment she had been admitted to the ward 61 in the cardiology unit of the general hospital .

She had been diagnosed as having two  blocked valves in her heart and surgery was needed. One valve was 99% blocked and the other was 49% blocked and needed to undergo bypass heart surgery.She had told that without surgery to cure her. However she has had to undergo by pass surgery.After surgery she says she is back to normal and feel much better. She had said that if not for the surgery there would not been a Sushila Kottege.

It is reported that the Teachers and Principals front had appealed to the Commissioner of examinations that owing to the proposed strike action the GCE ( ordinary level ) examination  be postponed.


In this connection the Commissioner of examinations WMNJ Pushpakumara had said that according to the manner the examination has been planned to be held there is no possibility of postponing the GCE ( ordinary level) examination.

Hence the examination would be held according to the time table issued.

Addressing a meeting held with the officials of the Lanka vehicle importers association on the 12th instant the Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake had said that the government has no intention of removing the new taxes imposed on imported vehicles or reducing the new taxes as per the budget proposals 2016 .


In this context the  persons connected to vehicle importation and the clients should realise that this decision had been taken in considering the acute economic situation confronted .This is a long term plan the government has drawn to get out of this economic mess.

The Minister Ravi Karunanayake had told the personnel of the Lanka vehicle importers association to focus on the present prices and not on the future prices of vehicles when they deal with vehicles.

The proposed strike of government ,semi government and private sector employees which was planned from the 15th ( mid night of
the 14th) has been temporarily according to a message by the convener Saman Rathnapriya.

After the speech made by the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe  in Parliament today the joint unions have to a great extent been satisfied with regard to their demands. Hence it had been decided to postpone the trade union action that was planned. However the bank unions have not taken a decision in this regard until Monday night it is reported.

Before the concluded presidential election the former minister of economic development Basil Rajapaksa and the director general of divi neguma department RAAK.Ranawaka charge sheets have issued by the Attorney General's department for spending a sum of  on the 14th instant.294 lakhs for publishing and distributing 50 lakhs of almanacs (lith) with the photograph of the then president Mahinda Rajapaksa.


In all against five charges the Attorney General had filed against them in Colombo High courts on the 14th instant.

In the parliamentary act No 15 of 1081 under section 79 (d) clause under the appointment of a new president these charges have been framed by the Attorney General against the above defendants.

It has been found that a sum of Rs 29,400,000 had been utilised from the divi neguma development account for the above purpose.

For the case 32 witnesses have been attached to this case to give evidence.

The two young women who's bodies were washed away after they had gone to bathe in Kotmale  Ramboda water fall on the 13th
instant had been found on the 14th instant after been washed away at a distance of nearly 300 metres away from the Ramboda water fall.

These two young women from Chilaw Punchi   wilattuwa muhunu watawala area had commenced to go on a  trip to worship Dalada Maligawa in Kandy  and then to Nuwara Eliya.On the return journey when bathing at Ramboda falls this unfortunate incident had taken place.

One of the deceased is a 26 year old spinster who was to marry shortly by name Thakshila Deepani Gunapala and the other  deceased  a  33 year old married woman Nirmala Manel Jayaratne.

In the group there had been 11 persons and only these two women had gone to bathe with three other men. There had been warning signals  displayed by the disaster management centre authorities but those who decided to bath in this area had not adhered to the warning.

The dead bodies of the two women had been taken to the Nawalapitiya hospital for the post mortem investigations on the 14th itself.

Under the  supervision of Superintendent of police Nuwara Eliya police station Anton Mahendra, the Assistant Superintendent of police G.Wimaladasa, the Kotmale police is conducting further investigations.

One of strong Ministers in the Mahinda Rajapaksa government Kurunegala Member of Parliament Johnston Fernando had evaded courts for 05 cases pertaining to his assets and liabilities statements not been furnished had been finally granted bail by the Colombo Magistrate courts.


The Bribery and corruption commission had filed action against the former Minister Johnston
Fernando for not submitting  his assets and liabilities statements for the period 2012 to 2015 in five cases.

The Chief Magistrate of the Magistrates courts Colombo Gihan Pilapitiya had allowed former Minister Johnston Fernando bail when he presented himself for these cases.He had been asked to pay Rs 10,000/ each for the five cases and also body bail of rupees ten lakhs for each case and has been banned from going abroad  without permission from courts and had been asked to appear before courts again.

The Magistrate had requested him to furnish  his all yearly assets and liabilities to the secretary general of parliament.

Johnston Fernando is accused of obtaining goods to the tune of rupees fifty two lakhs from the Kurunegala Lak Sathosa  without making a payment during the period of the Wayamba election in the previous government. During the 100 day programme of the previous government consequent to a police complaint made in this regard he had been remanded and it is learnt that this debt was since paid by him.

It is learnt that Johnston Fernando is the owner of the VFM radio service, also the owner of several foreign liquor shops in Kurunegala and also the owner of a distillery.

Although all trade union had decided to call off their country wide strike scheduled from the 15th (mid night on the 14th) the Ceylon Bank employees union had resorted to strike action today. As a result there had been a complete breakdown of banking activities.


The employees of the Ceylon Bank employees union with eight other state banks and 12 private banks had joined in this strike to protest against the budget proposals 2016.This was announced by the executive member Kesara Kottegoda.

The reasons are for pruning of profits by withdrawing pawning activities and leasing services which prompts them to lose profits.

It is reported that about 5000 employees had participated in the protest which had caused traffic congestion in Fort area in the afternoon.

Then the leader of the house and Minister Lakshman Kiriella had got up and said what is going on in the Parliament is the preliminary debate and what the Prime Minister had announced are only the amendments to the initial budget proposals for 2016.

Farmers plan to come to Colombo day after tomorrow in span - cloth in protest of the budget




The  members of All Ceylon  farmers association have organised to come to Colombo on the 17th instant wearing span-clothes in a procession to show their dissent for pruning the  concession for the fertilizer subsidy from this budget proposals 2016.


This has been added by the national organiser Namal Karunaratne.The famers had grouped themselves into nine groups and had protested at various parts of the country. The day after tomorrow on the 17th instant they hope to stage a protest in Colombo by coming to Colombo wearing span-clothes and hope to meet the high officials of the government to protest against the pruning of the fertilizer subsidy.
