Muthumenika found lying inside firewood shed ... after a service of sixty eight years!

Muthumenika found lying inside firewood shed ...
after a service of sixty eight years!

The heartbreaking story of a woman who was engaged in servant duties for a lengthy period of sixty long years was reported last week when she was left in a corner of the house.

This woman had been lying on a bed in a corner of ward no. 9 in Mawanella government hospital, in a totally frail condition and anyone who cares to hear the real story of this fragile woman is indeed
shocking, to say the least.

She was someone who was carrying on domestic duties in a walauwa in Molligoda itself from the tender age of seven. Her age now happens to be 77 years. The only duty this helpless woman had done from that age has only been carrying out domestic duties for others. Initially it was for the person who is supposed to be the landed proprietor and to his wife. Subsequently for his three children. Our victim had cooked for them and attended to all menial jobs of these people and had spent her entire life engaged in those duties. It seems that the woman's delicate and gentle schoolgoing age had been robbed by meritorious beings of this walauwa.

Thus other than bestowing servant duties to one master and subsequently all his offspring thereafter in one and the same walauwa in both her youth and thereafter her middle age there actually was nothing else she had done for herself, so to say. In this way Muthu Menike has not had a right of her own which even an animal would have not been deprived of. But her masters have enjoyed the title of landed proprietors and were further fully fledged righteous humans living in Molligoda, Mawanella. To cap it all, these activities were taking place at the mansion situated behind a massive Buddha statue.

It is not known as to the manner in which most of the villagers in the location came to identify those in the walauwa. The villagers however were able to see with their own eyes daily as to how this woman kept on sticking to her task like a slave or else as a prisoner until her strength was no more. Whatever it is, the villagers have come to hear that her name was Muthu Menika and that she had been brought here by people of this walauwa at her tender age and that she has had a distant relationship to the crowd at the walauwa and that was after a promise that shw would be brought up and cared for as a child of their own. But it does not appear that the landed proprietors who took abode in that house had not stuck to their promise.

Whatever it is, it was the police who brought Muthu Menika to hospital. Police managed to get at her from a tip off they received from the villagers and that was when this helpless woman was lying feeble and wasted in the space which incidentally had been used as a kennel in the walauwa where she had been staying and this human life was found lying down there in a wasted manner. Incidentally it was where she had been staying, that had been used as the firewood shed of the walauwa.

In any case there is no end to incidents of heartrending instances attached to inquiries as far as the police are concerned. Both male and female police officers who understood and saw the life story of Muthu Menika's pathetic plight brought tears into their eyes, police said. When the police got news about Muthu Menika and stepped into the premises of the walauwa, what beset their eyes was a heap of broken down pieces of household items. Those were stored in a wet and damp shed made out of planks. Towards the rear of this walauwa by the side of this shed itself was seen the kennel of the dog in the walauwa. Apart from that in order to find shelter from torrential rains, dogs in the neighbourhood would come scampering to this firewood shed as a last resort. Muthu Menika in fact herself finding shelter at this very spot covered with dust until her few days there. Thus she found consolation there with this clan of dogs in a corner of this space cuddling herself up. To cover her nakedness she had made use of a silk cloth and a jacket. If there at all was something to call her own, it was nothing other than a rusted tin plate and a cup which stood beside her mat. Mawanella police say that no proper food had fallen into that plate for some days. Not even a replenishment of food and drink or medicines given so far had been effective enough so far to dispel Muthu Menika's frailty. After having rescued her from this hellish existence and found a bed in hospital by police with heir intervention, what she said actually surprised the doctors and everybody present there. She had been murmuring and had said that she had never ever got an opportunity to rest on a bed all her life at the walauwa where she was occupied as a domestic aide. In other words Muthu Menika has spent over seven decades as a child and young woman here and there and in corners within the walauwa. Other than that she had not been allotted a room as such in this mansion of a walauwa. Even when the police managed to get at her she was lying in a torn off piece of mat. She had made the police understand in that instance that the extent of unkindness she faced about two weeks previously and it was that the wife of her master who is called Loku Hamine had pulled her by her hair and assaulted her inhumanely.

That then is Muthu Menika's present situation. In the process, while this aged woman was remaining in a worn out shed, the mother in law of the master of the walauwa had been enjoying all facilities in a room inside. This is the information unravelled and exposed at present. Police are hovering around her bed with the intention of securing further statements from her. However, according to medical reports Muthu Menika has still not satisfactorily recovered as such.

Offspring of higher ups of this walauwa who were cared for and brought up by Muthu Menika have now become parents, it is understood. The fact that one of them presently holds a big position at a rupavahini channel which broadcasts dhamma to the whole island is a dialogue which has become a frequent topic of villagers in the locality. It is a question of most people that hasn't the time come for all who was cared for, looked after and brought up by this aged Muthu Menika who dedicated her life for them to carry out their duty in return. However if in case that does not happen, Muthu Menika would not be exonerated from social responsibilities owed to her by society. While the suspected party rejects these allegations of Muthu Menika, what they say is that they cared for her well.

Sunil Shantha hears his own voice while bathing ...
with the name Ivor being mentioned!

It was the thirteenth in the month of June in the year 1952; a similar date as this. Sunil Shantha was to her the song 'Varen heen sere' sung by him, over the radio. He had been giving ear to this song with interest when he happened to hear a small shortcoming during the recital and was shocked. He was quite sure that there was no shortcoming of that nature in this song which he had sung, earlier.

However, how did this song which he was giving ear to fell on his ears; he began to wonder. Once the
song was over, Laddie Ranasingha who was an announcer of the radio announced that the singer of the song of that moment was Ivor Dennis and he also mentioned that it was the 'aadunika peya' programme which was going on the air at that moment. Thus, Sunil Shantha came to realise that his ears were deceived by an amateur singer called Ivor Dennis. Sunil Shantha then proceeded to find information from one of his pupils, Patrick Denipitiya and had gone in search of him and had left a message to meet him. But Ivor's father thinking that it would be a detriment to his son's education, prevented him from going. However, with the support of Ivor Dennis's mother Maria Rodrigo he went to meet Sunil Shantha and started studying music under the latte. That was how Ivor Dennis the singer, musician and vocalist was born. Ivor Dennis sang the song 'Kurulu paradeese' written by another pupil of Sunil Shantha, Thilaka Sudharman Silva in 1959 and became a  radio singer. Subsequently he next sang the song "Kethaki paatali gas natawa' written by poet H.M. Kudaligama and it was a river-song. Both those songs being songs created by his mentor Sunil Shantha was something special to him. Ivor was successful in the government music teachers' examination in the year 1959 and got his appointment as the music teacher of Getangama Maha Vidyalaya and in 1974 became the teaching advisor on folk music at the government music college. Ivor who taught at Horana Sripali Kala Aayatanaya retired from his teaching profession; but continued in his music activities.

Ivor was not only a singer but expressed himself as an actor too in the field of Arts. He started his acting stint by joining the Colombo foundation Rasanjali Kalaayathanaya creation of the drama "Eseya, api ohu meravemu" which was launched by that kalaayathanaya. Further, he gave life to the main character by singing "Depaano geetha ingi naluwe" of D.B. Makuloluwa. He was also the main actor of Sathischandra Edirisingha's drama "Thahanchi". Ivor Dennis embarked himself as a playback singer in Mr. Lester James Peries's film "Rekhava" which was screened in the year 1956. The scene which portrayed with a stilt-walker (role played by Sesha Palihakkara) coming to the village was accompanied with Sunil Shantha vocalising the virindu recital in that instance. This virindu creation which was composed by Rev. Mercelline Jayakody and it was his mentor Sunil Shantha who created it with a new outlook. Since Sunil Shantha did not go to India to record these songs, it was his pupil Ivor Dennis whom he made use of for that purpose. In that instance singers like Sisira Senaratna, Indrani Vijaya Bandara and Thilakasiri Fernando were trained in singing sessions under the supervision of Ivor Dennis. In the same way it was Ivor Dennis who sent singers like Dharmadasa Walpola, Latha Walpola, H.R. Jothipala, Sidney Attygalla, Mohideen Beg to India for training in singing a number of songs in Dr. Lester James Peries's film 'Sandeshaya' which was screened in 1959 by Cinemas Theatres. Though Ivor Dennis had his training and guidance under Sunil Shantha, he did not make Ivor Dennis be confined to one particular framework in the field of music and motivated him to go a long journey by allowing him to associate other musicians as well. It was in that manner that Ivor Dennis got the opportunity of singing in radio programmes such as 'Rasa miyuru ha vidya geethaya' which were created for the radio by Dr. W.D. Amaradeva.

It was the duo Ivor Dennis and T.M. Jayaratna who were chosen by Premasiri Khemadasa to sing a song of Ravindranath Tagore which incidentally was composed by Premadasa Alawaththagoda into Sinhala as "Anduru kutiya thula doragulu laagena".
In the case of the film "Babaru ewith",  Khemadasa introduced the voice of Ivor Dennis by mixing it with the voice of T.M. Jayaratna for the song "Handuna gaththoth oba ma". The voice of Ivor Dennis was utilised also for the audio cassette "Rasa weda" in Khemadasa's opera creations such as "Mage kalaye mawuni" and "Manasa vila pirinivan mangalya".

While Ivor Dennis was selected as the Best Singer of the Year for his singing the theme song "Kanda eha wessa vahinava" composed by Premasiri Khemadasa in the film "Hima kathara" he was also bestowed with the President's Award at the cinema festival hosted by National Film Corporation.

Ivor Dennis was even was instrumental in carrying his voice to international level and he sang "E thamai ape aadare" song composed by Chandrakirthi Kularatna at the global singing competition held in New Zealand in 1986 where Sri Lanka clinched first position, thus representing Sri Lanka.

This distinguished and senior singer has now left us. It then is not falsehood to mention that the duties he had rendered to the field of music as given above is just a wee bit of his achievements. Though this wonderful singer called Ivor Dennis and actor will no longer come in our view live, he would still be made to live for myriads of years throughout generations; the songs he sang, songs which he created will no doubt keep him alive.

Bon voyage ... great artiste! We invite you to come back  and may you rest in peace! Final rites of Mr. Ivor Dennis would be conducted tomorrow or the 20th at 3 in the afternoon at Seeduwa burial grounds.

Match officials who dislike Sri Lanka refusing to take the field after accusing Chandimal for ball tampering ... take revenge on Chandimal!

Captain Dinesh Chandimal was accused for ball tampering yesterday while fielding in the second day of the second test played at St. Lousia Darren Samy grounds between Sri Lanka and the West Indies team. As a consequence a decision has been arrived at to suspend the match and to withhold payment of match fee.

On a previous day a serious accusation was made against the captain of the Sri Lankan team, the coach and manager under level 3 by the ICC for having protesting against the umpires and refusing to
bring the players to the grounds. If the inquiry proves positive, 4 upto 8 matches would be suspended or further punishment would be imposed, it was announced.

Chandimal who faces this allegation rejects it and he is provided the opportunity of making an appeal in this connection within 48 hours, it is reported. Chandimal faced the inquiry last evening with participation of match referee of the ICC, former Indian player Jawarhal Shrinath and match umpires with the assistance of television cameras relevant to the said incident and what Chandimal said was that it was a usual thing for him to use such things as toffee or chewing gum and that it was not with a wrong intention that he engaged in chewing something like that in this particular instance.

Whatever it is, subsequent to this inquiry the ICC has resolved to prohibit Chandimal from acting as captain of the Sri Lankan team in the match played against the West Indies team from last night. Apart from that, match referee has decided to charge the entire fee paid to him as a form of fine and to impose 2 suspension points. What the international cricket committee say is that the Sri Lankan captain resorted to changing the condition of the ball contradictory to the accepted methodology of polishing the ball. The international cricket committee say that it is against the accepted standards  to polish the ball using spit after inserting a toffee retained in the pocket  ... into the mouth. As the chief administrator of international administrative board, David Richardson has stated he totally approves the decision of the match referee. As a result the situation has turned into a more complicated level.

In any case, since Dinesh Chandimal completely refutes this accusation, there is possibility that this inquiry is to proceed as far as an independent inquiry. Prior to this accusation was levelled at South African Test captain, Faff du Plessis for ball tampering by polishing the ball with some type of preservative and though he challenged the international cricket council for their decision, he was found guilty at that independent inquiry. It was for an allegation of this nature that Australian cricket captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner had to leave their positions by sobbing in public.

It is said that in the over where preparations were taking place to call Lahiru Kumara to bowl, the ball was retrieved from Kusal Mendis and Chandimal had begun to scamper towards the direction at the bowling-end where Lahiru Kumara was by tossing a toffee or chewing-gum picked from his pocket with his left pocket and Chandimal who thus joins Lahiru Kumara begins to polish the ball with spit he hands over the ball in such a short period of one-tenths of a second and finally runs back to his position. This then s the only instance seen in the video as testimony where Chandimal tampers with the ball and it is the opinion of cricketing fans that it is not a strong incidence of evidence as such.

This in reality is not its beginning incident, an incident where Dhananjaya Silva of the Sri Lankan team who proceeds towards the boundary line has his hands checked by Ian Gul in suspicion and is warned by him is reported. Accordingly the following day morning initially the umpires throw allegations that the ball was tampered with and award 5 penalty points. As a team the Sri Lankan players therefore protested against it. Thereafter the Sri Lankan team carry out a strike against the match being played y delaying coming to the grounds. In the process the umpires have once again scrutinised the relevant scenes and as if to somehow or other involve Chandimal had directed the blame on him. Whatever it is, the reason for the strike launched by Chandimal and his team mates was that things which the umpires ares supposed to have confirmed from camera footage have not been brought to the observation of the Sri Lankan management. Later, the match referee has taken steps to provide it to manager Asanka Gurusingha.

It is understood that ICC stalwarts such as Alin Dar and Ian Gul as well as Jawarhal Shrinath not being prepared to withdraw their allegations and thus face defeat is the reason for this issue to become aggravated. It is also in that manner that an unanticipated accusation falls on the shoulders of Dinesh Chandimal.

Robbing incident at Nileka Jewellery which shook Matara and the police struggle

Robbing incident at Nileka Jewellery which shook Matara and the police struggle

In the battle that took place over the robbery which ensued between the underground gang of Kosgoda Tharaka and the police yesterday in Matara at Nileka Jeweleery shop, a police constable died while two other police constables, four persons in all suffered injuries in the gunfire that took place in the process.

When the robbery was taking place, on a call received, the said constable who died had arrived on the scene with some other police constables and had been taking cover at a wall close to the jewellery shop and had been surveying proceedings when the looters who emerged from the other door had
shot him from behind close to his body towards his chest region and thus killed him in that instance. But a moment before that, being feeble he tried to reach the shop in one leg; but later collapses by the roadside.

It was a police constable aged 33 years named Suranga Pradeep Weerasingha (69532) who was attached to criminal investigation unit of Matara police station who passed away in this manner. While among the injured were two in the police force, a bus-conductor and a female. Underworld leader Kosgoda Tharaka including three others of the same gang sustained injuries and had fled after being shot at and when admitted to Galle, Karapitiya hospital were taken into custody. Police also inform that Chamara Indrajith, supposed to be a violent type of underground member was taken into custody while hiding in a house close to Matara Hunukotuwa junction.

Chamara Indrajith who was arrested yesterday was escorted for the purpose of being shown weapons and on that occasion he had attempted to throw a handbomb at the police officers and had been shot at by police; he had thus died this morning 23rd, police say. Among members of the underground who were wounded yesterday is Kosgoda Mahesh, a brother of Kosgoda Tharaka and Anuradhapura Athula, a friend of his, it was reported. The underground members who sustained gun shots may have come to Karapitiya hospital across a by-road from Matara, police assume.

The armed gang of looters had come in a small motor vehicle and barged into Nileka Jewellery shop down Dharmapala Mawatha in Matara around 10.00 in the morning and upon scaring members of the staff there had cornered and locked them up in a small room in the shop and subsequently collected all valuables in the jewellery shop into a bag and thus finished their plan. In the meantime an employee who was confined to the room had managed to contact 119 of Matara police headquarters over a mobile phone he had in his possession and informed about this robbery which was taking place. In these circumstances a team of officers of the crime investigation unit had rushed to the jewellery shop at that very moment.

In the process the looters had opened fire at deceased police constable Mr. Weerasingha and his team mates and had scampered on motor cycles nearby. The robbers as well as policemen suffered injuries in this incident which was similar to a scene from a film with gunfire taking place right round, terrorising the entire location. Though 1  police constable lost his life from gun shots aimed at by the robbers, apart from him a police sergeant and a driver too were wounded, police say. Other than that a woman close to the shop and a conductor of a private bus which was plying on the road at that time had received gunshots. All of them have by now receiving treatment at hospital and a hospital spokesman said that two persons including the bus-conductor are in a serious state. Head prefect assaulted by students of his own school ... passes away!

A student who was the head prefect at  Savarana Vidyalaya in Chilaw and was studying in the 11th year was subjected to an assault by a group of other students and was hospitalised after being injured in the incident and had passed away as a result of this assault. The deceased student had been conferred the status of head prefect of the school recently and some others
who envied this position being offered him had been involved in this assault, reports were published.

The said student after having attended a religious session at Savarana Colony mosque  last 15th at about 10 in the night had been returning home on a push cycle when four students of year 10 in the same school had knocked off electric bulbs in the vicinity and had brutally kicked him and assaulted him with clubs, it was revealed at inquiries. Police say that they then had threatened him not to divulge this incident to anybody and then taken to their heels.

Because of this threatening he had not told anything about this to his parents. However, as he had complained of a headache and subsequently his condition had become serious in the process, he was admitted to Chilaw hospital. As his condition had aggravated the patient was then admitted to Colombo General Hospital. There a surgical operation was performed on his head and subsequently while receiving treatment at the intensive care unit, he had passed away day-before-yesterday (23) early morning.

The deceased is Mohammed Rizwi Mohommed Faizool (16) studying in Chilaw Savarana Vidyalaya. Teachers of his school say that the deceased student was an outstanding student and took leadership in religious activities apart from taking leadership in social welfare-work and was in the forefront of extra-curricular activities as well. The student concerned has been dedicated to maintain discipline in an exemplary manner among students of the school. It was revealed at investigations that the root cause for this assault had been a case of jealousy.

This is what the deceased's mother Siththi Nafiza said about the incident: "Aiyo ... my child! Wasn't this crime committed because of jealousy! We never thought that a thing like this would be committed for having made him head prefect. What we want is justice".

Juwarieth Umma, grandmother of Faiool described the incident as follows: "This happened on 25th which was the Nombi Day. It was when my grandson wanted to return home after going to mosque that he was hit on the head. A friend of grandson said that he was struck with an 'albisia' pole. That friend was not beaten even once. Before assaulting, they had knocked off lights in the surrounding area. That means these boys have carried out this assault in an organised manner. After being struck and having fallen down they had threatened the other boy not to tell anybody. This assault has been carried out because of jealousy. My grandson is a clever child. At the same time the head prefect of the school. As such these boys who assaulted him were having a big rudge on him. It  was my grandson who provided protection to female students".

The post-mortem in this connection was performed day-before-yesterday (23) at Colombo National Hospital. It was mentioned that the cause of death was internal haemmorage because of heavy blows being struck on the head. Before the demise of the student, three students were taken into custody and after being produced before Chilaw magistrate and two of them were given bail while the other was ordered to be under probationary care and thus directed to a children's home.

Special revelation of Gnanasara thero

Galagodaaththe Gnanasara thero, general secretary of Bodu Bala Senava organisation, it was stated in media reports that he would be making a special revelation after being released and it was held this afternoon. On that occasion he made a controversial speech and even explained mat to he being asked to wear a jumper and also expressed some special opinions.

"Those who hang behind Kapuva's who plead before the god of the dewala called the judiciary have
now even received further benefits. By now, it has come to be understood that those referred to have got appointments before the 14th to assume a leading position connected to the security headquarters of the country.

They asked me to wear the jumper. That is the law. I did not go into conflict with them. Several groups came and made the request. Their duty of course is to make a person guilty by courts and to carry out the duty as stated in the book. That is their job. As such, after this revelation is made, I don't know whether they will have to go home. I will not let that happen. We will appear on behalf of them.

Even after coming out ... I did not make a challenge on the State judiciary. Neither did I violate the bhikku constitution. Therefore, it is the same Gnanasara hero who came out. Even if I am hanged, I will not wear the jumper. I did not get down because I respect them. As a sig of respect I put aside the robe and tied the belt and put the towel over my shoulder".
