Unexpected transfer for Judge Ilanchelian

Because of a rumour that Mr. Maniccavasagar Ilanchelian serving as a Judge at Jaffna High Court is to be transferred to another judicial court of another area has resulted in a protest by both civil organisations and political parties. Even the Tamil National Alliance has made a request that this action be invalidated. They mention that after Mr. Maniccavasagar took up duties as Judge of
Jaffna High Court in the year 2015, a peaceful atmosphere prevailed in the area.

It is understood that this transfer was the outcome of a group of people who believed that Judge Ilanchelian's action of delivering judgments in some trials amidst threats to life and also launching various anonymous programmes associating police officers. When questioned about this topic from Mr. Ilanchelian, what he said was that since he was a government servant he is ready to go to any place where he is transferred.

Mr. Ilanchelian assumed the position of Jaffna High Court Judge in the year 2015 at the time he was serving as the High Court Judge in Trincomalee. Prior to that he had been serving for a long time as district Judge of Vavuniya. Steps being taken to effect a transfer to Mr. Maniccavasagar who at present is serving as the High Court Judge in Jaffna to be transferred to another judicial area thus has aroused a protest from civil organisations and political factions.

Sorrowful story of Ranga ... father of one child who died from lorry accident

Sorrowful story of Ranga ... father of one child who died from lorry accident

The sorrowful story which unfolds about thirty-four year old Ranga who  died from a lorry - lorry accident in Kandy last 6th while serving as a driver in a newspaper transport institution.

"We used to call Ranga 'teddy bear' and as a pet name. It was I who would wait for him until Saturday ... to cuddle his son and spend time in affection. But why did this tragedy happen to fall on this very
day?". It was in that manner that wife of K.T.D. Ranga began wailing about her husband's death, the latter of whom passed away in hospital having met with an accident near Kegalle Balika College on the morning hurs of last 5th.

The said accident took place while serving as a driver of a newspaper transport institution when the van driven by Ranga had struck another lorry parked by the roadside. Ranga who was hospitalised for two days finally passd away at the intensive care unit in Kandy hospital on the 7th. Ranga Gayan who was serving for a newspaper agent in Kandy had set off towards kandy last 4th towards midnight with the idea of delivering the weekend newspapers to selling-outlets as soon as possible. the accident happened when he had as usual delivered the newspapers from Pasyala town to their agents and had been on his way to Kealle after delivering newspapers to other selling-outlets.

According to what Ranga's wife, Ashnika Darshani (33) says, the lorry driven by Ranga had knocked against a fertilizer lorry parked near Kegalle Balika Vidyalaya. "that lorry had been there in an unprotected manner for over twenty four hours there. Maybe it had a technical fault. When I visited Ranga at hospital, he held me by the hand and said, 'aney ... I don't know what happened to me; I didn't see anything'. Can a big vehicle like that be parked in an unsafe manner for so many days? Whatever it is I lost my son's father". Asnika who was in tears when we met her at her home at 1/491, Meekanuwa, Ampitiya also had this to say: "It is eleven years for May 12th since we got married. Both of us have never ever engaged in a quarrel for this eleven years as such. Every day it was around 4 in the evening that he would leave home to deliver the newspapers. It is at about 5 in the evening that their vehicle leaves from Kandy. Ranga worked in that firm for about 6 years. Because of the night duties I did not like it very much. But because he won the hearts of those at his work-place and honestly, he could not leave that place. He enjoyed working there very much. Ranga used to cme home the following morning around 8. He would leave once again at about 4 in the evening. All of us would look forward till Saturday comes. Aney ... such a day would never dawn again for our family. It was when Kegalle police called me early Saturday morning that we came to know of the accident. Immediately we went to Kegalle. Aney, even at that moment he spoke well. He was then transferred to Kandy General Hospital".

After being admitted to the intensive care uga passed away last 7th. Ashen Nethma is Ranga Gayan's only son. Ashen following his studies at St. Sylvester College in grade 5 is one of the clever students in the class. Ranga had been so taken up by exploits of his son in school. In fact he had been counting his fingers to attend the moment when his son was to be awarded status of prefect in a few more months. Small Ashen not being able to bear the demise of his father was getting closer and closer to his mother as the only protector of her in the future.

Mary Beatrice is Ranga Gayan's mother. She too broke down at the loss of her son, bringing to memories of Ranga. He never took liquor or cigarettes. He associated everyone without racial or religious discrimination. Proprietor of Kandy Jayakody Newspaper Transport establishment, Mr. J.M.K. Jayakody associated Ranga Gayan as an honest friend more than as an employee. "Ranga is in employment with us for a number of years. Newspapers of all companies are distributed from Pasyala to Matale by him. in such circumstances he delivers daily and weekend newspapers to about 60 agents. Though he was a driver, he kept close contact with most people in printing divisions and distribution of all newspaper companies. We lost a wonderful person", said Mr. Jayakody.

At all times what he tried was to deliver the newspaper to agents as soon as possible. At times he would go beyond his responsibilities and  would go to the printing distributing division and would lend a hand to them and thus won the hearts of everybody in that manner. With this accident, his purse, mobile phone, driving license and all other documents have been either robbed or are missing anyhow. On the one hand it is indeed disgusting to hear of something like this in a tragedy of this sort. Ranga who was born on September 17th, 1983 would have been thirty-four years of age at the time of his death; however he was beyond his age so to say and was a friend to everyone. When Ranga departed, he had nothing to take with him. What was left was the life he led as an exemplary character. Nishantha Bandara (42) who faced serious injuries being Ranga's lorry assistant was admitted to Kegalle Basic Hospital for treatment and later transferred to Kandy General Hospital. He who is a father of two children and living in Katugasthota is under treatment at the intensive care unit of Kandy General Hospital. One of his legs has been amputated and his condition is understood to be serious, news sources say.

Hidden story behind artist Sithum Sudhara who killed his wife

Hidden story behind artist Sithum Sudhara who killed his wife

Artist Sithum Sudhara who murdered his wife and then made an attempt to commit suicide by jumping into a well by now is under police custody. The story that transpired from the day he confronted his wife Kumudu and fell deeply in love and the moment when his temper reached its apex is hitherto revealed.

This artist who was living in Veyangoda area engaged in the profession of the Batik trade which
actually was the trade which came down from the family. It was a few years before that Sithum comes across Kumudu at a certain festival. From the very first day Sithum set his eyes upon Kumudu, he had developed a love for her. That night he began to dream about her the whole night. The next day itself he had etched her figure, imagining her beauty. He had thus made a resolution that he would some day or the other make Kumudu his lover and called her this way:
"Hello nangi ... can you rember me? I am Sudhara".
"Ah ... yes aiyya ... I can remember you. It's the aiyya who does art work, isn't it?"
"Exactly right. So I called you to give a present"
"What presents for me aiyya ... we came to know each other that day, no"
"Aiyo ... don't get scared. This is a special gift"
"What's the special gift ... I don't want anybody's gifts"
"Don't get scared. I drew your face the way I could remember. It's to give that drawing that I called you"
"Ane ... is it so ... I got scared thinking it was something else ... why ane you drew my face ... didn't you have any other faces to draw ...?"
"Your face is really so nice ... that's why I drew it"
"Don't tell lies ayye"
"Not lies, it's true. How can I give this to you nangi?"
"Aiyya, you post it. I'll give you the address"
"Ok nangi"

The romance that kindled in that manner subsequently blossomed into a love affair even before a few weeks elapsed. Now Kumudu's whole world was nothing but Sudhara. She had loved his heart as well as his artistic creations all the same, it is understood. Sudhara too felt the same emotion towards her. He had loved his lover more than his life. Kumudu in fact was about three years elder to him. But that was not an obstacle for their love.

Sudhara's father incidentally was well-known artist Ranjitpriya. His home was commonly known as 'Batik nivasa' among villagers. Not long after, Sudhara broke the news about Kumudu to his parents. Then Kumudu too told her parents about Sudhara. However Kumudu's home-people at first did not take a liking towards the attachment. Later, on Kumudu's headstrong compulsion her parents gave in to her desire.

Sudhara on a certain day in the month of January made her his legal wife and brought her to 'Batik nivasa'. Two or three months they had lived in happiness together. But as time passed by Sudhara had begun to change as unexpected. This sudden change that came over him was something that she could not understand. Sudhara began to change more and more as time progressed. In the end he would engage in a quarrel even for the slightest thing. She was thus for a number of months bearing the scoldings and beatings of Sudhara because of the sheer love she had for Sudhara. Kumudu too of course had her limits of patience. Ultimately she haded towards her parents with tears in her eyes.

"Ane amme ... I can't live with Sudhara anymore. He's not the person who was before. Now he behaves like an animal ... every time he beats me, scolds me. His parents are also like that. Every time they take his side. Now I am fed up of life ...!" That is what she said.

"We told you duwe not to get married to him. But you didn't listen to us. Now there's nothing to do. You are not too much for us. Till we die we'll look after you", was the response of her parents. Though it consoled her heart to some extent, she however began to entertain sorrowful thoughts about her future and her husband. In the same way she had a host of other problems. She began to get sadder and sadder wondering how she was to face society and friends.

After about a month passed, Sudhara began to feel a love for his wife once again. He buried the past unpleasant memories. He began to view his wife with love. "Those past incidents won't happen again". On that promise that he made to Kumudu he brought her back to 'Batik nivasa' once again. For some weeks the two of them got along happily. But again Sudhara began to change unanticipatedly. As before, conflicts began to raise its head as before. In the process Sudhara's parents too interfered in these disputes. Whatever anybody would say, nobody could settle the quarrels that flared between the two. In fact, these disputes between the couple of course was not something new for the neighbours.

The time was past seven one night. The quarrel which took place that night was beginning to reach a high level. Both of them in fact had been hammering at each other in the harshest words possible. Their shouting in fact became a nuisance to people around as well. That night Sudhara behaved as a brute.

"I'll have to do one or the other today. It's enough that I lived with you. You are a big devil!"
"Is it only now that you realised that I am a devil? I am not scared of your mouth now. Do what you can"
"I am telling you ... shut that dirty mouth ... if not I'll hit you for you to lose all your teeth!"
"Hit if you can ... you think I'll get scared?"

The couple who engaged in a big tiff this way even went to the extent of clobbering each other. At that moment Sudhara behaved worse than a brute. Not being able to control his temper, what Sudhara did was pick up a dumbell which he had been using for his exercises and aim it with utmost force at Kumudu's head. One could hear some words leaving her mouth at that moment. She was battling between life and death that moment. Just then neighbours who rushed in took steps to take her to Wathupitiwela hospital.

The gravity of what was done transpired on the artist only a few minutes later. He then realised that there was no point in living anymore. He too thus made a decision of putting an end to his life. Thereby he jumped into a nearby well with the idea of committing suicide. But everybody around were witnesses to this. Without delay they then rushed in rescued Sudhara who jumped into the well. Later police officers who visited this scene of violence took him into custody.

Though admitted to hospital, Kumudu's life could not be saved.  Finally she left everything and left this world forever. Sudhara who could not control his excessive temper and killed his wife may now be thinking about the seriousness of his blunder and definitely must be repenting about his crime.

Colombo day care matron remanded in vain ... for having beaten district judge's child!

Colombo day care matron remanded in vain ...
for having beaten district judge's child!

An incident was reported yesterday of an instance of a district court judge having sought legal assistance on behalf of his child saying that the matron and her assistant had beaten, physically punished and harassed his child at the temporary day care centre and thus going to the extent of directing them to remand and pursuant to which the two of them were allowed bail by court under the condition that it was meaningless.

Though the judge concerned had sought assistance of the law, saying that the said matron and
assistant had complained that they had harassed the child, according to what was exposed in court was that there had been a misunderstanding with the wife of the judge, the latter of whom is a legal director of the municipality.

Chief magistrate, Colombo, Mr. Ranga Dissanayaka, Colombo who inquired into the case came to the conclusion that a punishment is meted out to constrain a child for the latter's welfare and not to treat the child inhumanly; that happens in a motivated instance and that has not happened in this particular case. Under such conditions Colombo chief magistrate Mr. Ranga Dissanayaka who inquired into the case then released the matron and her assistance of the day care centre in remand yesterday (14) presumed to have beaten a child who was a minor. It was matron Ranjani Fernando and Shyamali Chandralatha of the day care centre which incidentally is being governed by the Colombo municipality who faced these circumstances.

They were remanded in that manner last 11th by court on a complaint lodged by the child's father, a district judge at Cinnamon Gardens police station on the complaint that a 10 year old child was treated in a brutal manner. Attorney-at-Law Mr. Anton Senanayaka who appeared on behalf of the suspects forwarded a motion yesterday (14) in court saying: "These children have been retained in a small room. There is not much facilities there. The complaint has been made saying that the child of the legal director of the Colombo municipality who had been beaten in this instance. We will not disturb proceedings of investigations. Children of parents employed in esteemed professions are maintained here under my clients. Today all of them have been put into inconvenience without a place to keep the children. Likewise the two children of my clients too have suffered because of this issue".

Court: "When inquiring into this incident, it is specially observed that information has been found pertaining to a long-standing family dispute. It has been revealed even in Battaramulla Child Magistrate Court that the mother of this child had assaulted the latter. The child's mother on the other hand says that she is not aware of the incident where her child was beaten up on May 3rd, 2018 and that she did not know until the father had come and complained to police in the weekend. What is apparent in such circumstances is that there had been conflicts among the child, the father and the mother for a long period. It is also understood that the father has had a necessity to act against the mother. It is also seen that the mother entertained a strong necessity to retain this child at a day care centre. The father has had the necessity to remove the child from there. It then appears that it is mentioned in the complaint that the problem of both mother and father had cut across the two suspects and ended as they had subjected the child to brutality.

If any punishment is to be administered to any child, it would be towards the child's welfare. Referring to 1995 No. 22 amendment clause 308 (a), subjecting children to brutality should be found to have been carried out on purpose, as stated therein. On this occasion, whether the suspects have beaten the children concerned on their legs was  done on purpose is a matter of conjecture. Since a case already is being heard in Battaramulla Child Magistrate Court to the effect that the mother has assaulted the children, the suspects would be released having taken all this into consideration". As such, the court which bailed out the suspects, the case under reference was postponed until next 18th.

Srimali Fonseka who became Sri Lanka's Married beauty Queen several years back managed to clinch the crown in the classic section beauty queen contest for married women known as Mrs. International World held in Florida, America recently.

The aforesaid contest is being organised by Mrs. International World Organisation of America and
about 30 contests which choose beauties and models all over the world on an annual basis and as depicted in that website, those prepared to make payment for the contest are eligible for the contest.

What was held recently was the Miss International World and Miss Latina International World contests. In the contest Miss International World was open to contestants in the age group of 18 - 30 while the Classic section was open to those of the age group of 31 - 45. It was that crown that Srimali won.

Srimali who expressed her ideas to FM channel in relation to her victory had this to say: "I participated for this pageant with representation of 30 countries. I was proposed and selected for this contest by Mr. Chitral de Mel, international director of of the competition in America. In fact I was somewhat scared to accept his invitation at the start. In any case I decided that I would somehow or the other I would participate and don the crown on behalf of our country.

We got the opportunity to dress in bikini during the contest. If we dress in bikini in our country, we would be looked upon in a different angle. But I could not refrain from doing so. In that instance it was I who became the highlight. A reason for my victory was my slim-look and the answer I gave at the question session".
