A 'strange funeral' on behalf of a dog!

The funeral proceedings held on behalf of a dog that died was conducted similar to proceedings carried out in the case of a deceased normal human being in Ganemulla area last afternoon (5).

The above funeral rites was performed on the demise of 'Michelle' the female dog of businessman Mr. Malith Sudusingha. 'Michelle' happened to be the loving pet of Mr. Subasingha. The said dog had died when she was 6 years old
and was subjected to love and affection by everybody in the house.

This is what Malith said in this regard: "It was I who brought Michelle. At that time Michelle was 2 months old. She always used to stay near my bed in my room. Michelle had qualities similar to that of a human being. She will reach 7 years this November 20th. Suddenly she stopped eating food at all. After testing her blood it was found that both her kidneys were not functioning. There's no medicine for it. She suffered for about three days. Vomitted and it is with my own hands that all dirt was removed. We never brought her up by chaining her. She was always living in freedom and was never caged up. While living and even after getting sick we treated her like a human being. The final rites also was done likewise. The fact that Michelle left us is not a sorrow that we can bear. But she lived a very fortunate life. My only wish is may Michelle become a child of my own and come back to me".

Just as much as in the case of a funeral of a human being, a 'mathakavasthra poojawa' too was held at this funeral. After Michelle closed her eyes at 5.30 in the dawn yesterday, her body was kept lying in the hall of the house for 5 hours from 11.30 in the morning and after the 'mathakavasthra poojawa' was over, she was buried in the yard of Mr. Subasingha's house.

Giggles in parliament when Lady Member of Parliament speaks in broken Sinhalese

When Lady Member of Parliament Vijayakala Maheswaran rose up to commence her speech yesterday in parliament, Minister Dinesh Gunawardena began to disturb her by finding fault with the House relating to the new constitution. Because of his interference she was not able to start speaking for a number of
minutes and it was for the first time that she spoke out about this interference in broken Sinhalese.

"Allow us to speak will you ... talk after I talk ... sit down ... here, Dinesh Gunawardena manthrithuma ... give us time ... aiyo I have been provided with a mike. You'll come to parliament and start playing ... with how much suffering we have come here to parliament to speak ... here today it's not regarding this no ... everyday bringing up racialism ... lifting it outside ... lifting it inside ... 'pissu' talk".

Having heard MP Vijayakala speak in Sinhala, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa who turned up in parliament had broken into a laugh accompanied by others. Seen below is how she spoke in Sinhala

Minister Dayasiri calls a report from personal managers of Sri Lanka cricketers

The Ministry of Sports yesterday directed a letter to Sri Lanka Cricket calling for a report from personal managers of Sri Lankan cricketers. The dialogue that has ensued in the social media and certain matters that emerged in relation to the influence on decisions of the national team in connection with Charles Austin who appears as the sole
Manager of 20 players including Mahela, Sanga, Matthews and Malinga has led to this situation.

BBC was addressed and informed that issues had cropped up because of these Managers even at the time that Dayasiri took up his appointment as Sports Minister and because there happens to be a Manager who was making an effort to remove Lakshan Sandaken (the Man of the Match in the Second One-day Match played against Zimbabwe) from that game before the match itself.

Displayed dance in Highway in order to market self

Menaka Madhuwanthi who was fined by courts for having driven a vehicle along the expressway recently while engaged in a dance has told a weekend newspaper that she did so to market herself and that it was nevertheless a good thing.

* Did you spotlight a dancing video in the internet because you have a lakh of demand in dancing activities?
That video was not put there because there's any lack of demand for dancing activities ... but to display my capabilities. That's a trend now. I did something like that to show my talent. But I got responses in a way I never thought. That happened voluntarily with no response from me.

* Some say that videos are spotlighted to create a market?
Definitely ... because we're not ordinary people ... we are those who are among the people. There's nothing wrong with that. The other thing is if we want to develop our market, I think it's a good thing.

* Do you Menaka also do things like this to create a market?
Definitely ... there must be plans like that no!

Sri Lankan who clicked photos when an Emir girl was changing clothes ... remanded!

A Sri Lankan national who is supposed to have secretly captured photographs of a young girl who had been selecting dresses at a prominent finished-garment complex in Dubai was taken into police custody of that country, it is reported.

This young man aged 25 years employed as a labourer had noticed an Emir national, a young girl with dazzling beauty making her rounds on a shopping spree for the weekend at a particular fashion outlet. Later on he had been following her
and had clicked photos of the girl concerned and finally on the sly even entered another shop where she had wanted to buy some dress.

In that shop she had entered a fit-on room to check how a dress would suit her and this young man who had been moving around the vicinity had gone to the extent of peeping into the room by secretly moving the door slightly so that he could look at her and capture a photo of the girl. The girl who then accidentally noticed that someone was inserting a camera through the slit had turned blue and let out a shriek when those in the shop had rushed to see what was happening. At that very moment the said youth had dropped his phone and tried to beat a retreat. Subsequently the security people of the shop had manhandled him and questioned him when ultimately, everything was revealed.

On checking the camera-phone of the youth it was possible to find several photos of this girl undressing herself including a number of photos of other charming girls who were moving around the road were found as well. The security guards had handed over the young man to the police and he was produced before courts yesterday. According to Emir Law he was to be imposed 3 months' imprisonment and after that punishment, he is to be expelled from the country, the Dubai Sri Lankan Consulate office had reported.

Channa, wife and child living separately in house ... turned into a teledrama

A rumour which circulated around teledrama artiste Channa Perera some years before this was that as a result of a critical situation in his family that he was spending his life separately in the house. Newspapers too inquired from him those days about that issue; but he had responded rejecting it.

Whatever it is, participating in an interview over a radio channel later he had said that his wife was
someone who was close to him only for a period of time and after that announcement his wife Gayathri too had responded to it across newspapers.

Channa happens to act in a teledrama akin to this same critical situation. Channa acts this role in that teledrama called 'Rathu ahasa' broadcast over Swarnavahini with Himali Siriwardenaacting in this teledrama.  A scene portraying Channa in the part of the scene broadcast yesterday can be seen below. In the scene mentioned, while wife and daughter were in the room, Channa tries to make the setee his bed and a dialogue uttered by him with disgust is observed in that scene. According to the story in the teledrama an illicit affair of the wife is the source of that incident.

Parents in poverty ...reject 6 lakhs!

How the first heart transplant was effected in Sri Lanka was published across the media recently and information about the donor the 21 year old youth Pradeep Kumara was published in skeleton-form. The mother, father and their relatives had granted permission to make this donation having come to understand that since the donor's brain was not functioning anymore Pradeep's life would not go on. The parents who were living in Mawilkumbura Kandy even consented to donate not only the
deceased young man's heart but both his kidneys and eyes as well. This family who were living amidst various financial hardships in a government land in a wattle and daub house had agreed to this donation as the biggest tribute for their only son who had this untimely departure.

The speciality of this tribute was that even though they were able to obtain a sum of about 6 lakhs through the hospital they had not claimed even a cent considering this donation as a deed of merit on behalf of their child.

Deceased Pradeep's father happens to be a labourer and the mother is not employed as such. Pradeep has 2 sisters. The elder sister is married and lives separately while the other sister has finished her schooling and is at home. The only son Pradeep in this poverty-stricken family studied only upto his O/Ls. After studying at Sri Revatha Vidyalaya and completing his studies there, was anticipating some employment.

In the meantime he had received an invitation to come for training at a garage and for purposes of training he had made it a custom of travelling to Pilimatalawa during the past period. It was his sister's husband who went with him for training there in his company. While they were on their way this manner on the motor cycle, a state-owned van going for a Dengue prevention task had collided with the motor cycle. Both of them were injured in this accident; but Pradeep's condition was serious.

Pradeep who was initially admitted to Bambaradeniya Hospital was later transferred to Kandy General Hospital. Though Pradeep was treated in so many ways with the aid of 7 types of equipment it was not possible to prevent his brain from living anymore. Doctors of Kandy General Hospital tried their utmost to save Pradeep's life for several days; but to no avail. Hospital authorities asked Pradeep's parents whether parts of Pradeep's body could be directed for someone else's use as his brain was beyond repair at which point they had given a positive response and thus his heart, eyes and kidneys were donated.

Pradeep's mother had this to say in that connection: "I am so sad ... on the other hand I am so happy. Today another person lives from his heart. Some others live from the kidneys. After the eyes are donated ... 4 others will see the light of day. We are so happy about it".

Difficult to bear defeat -- Matthews

Difficult to bear defeat -- Matthews

After yesterday's defeat at the hands of Zimbabwe, Angelo Matthews has said: "It's difficult to bear this defeat as a team. Actually it's because of our faults that we lost this match. But we will face the Test match that we're going to encounter in the near future and must win that game.

Actually we have many shortcomings. There are weaknesses in various aspects that we should
rectify. In the future we have the Indian tournament. We have a big competition with them. Before going on that tour within this short time available we should correct our shortcomings and weaknesses.

As a team we always practise. We programme everything. But as if by misfortune the problem is that after going to the middle of the pitch these are forgotten. Before the Indian tour it's only a short time that we have to put right our mistakes.

Royal's motto 'Disce aut Discede' which became a vulgar expression for the social media

A part of a statement which is alleged to have been spoken by Minister Dayasiri as 'Ammata disce' keeps circulating in the social media these days.

This unfamiliar series of words written on a piece of paper had been uttered at a speech made at an event at which Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera attended last week. These words which appeared in
Dayasiri's English speech may have been because of an idea of a Secretary who wrote it and gave him and Dayasiri too uttered it with difficulty. That part of the video was broadcast in the social media with the criticism 'Monawada bang moo kiyavanne!' (What is this this fellow saying!)

The meaning of 'Disce Aut Discede' which is a well-known expression in Latin is 'Learn or get out!' This expression containing this meaning became more popular in Sri Lanka because it is being used also as the motto of Royal College.

There are reports to say that Todd who held the position of Principal during the period 1871 - 8  at Royal College, Colombo which was institution was established by the English as the Colombo Academy was a tough character who ruled the students by using the theme 'Learn or get out'. At a later time it became the motto of the school. It has been written in the annals of the history of the school that it was important to work according to this statement in connection with directing the mind towards one objective and in safeguarding discipline of the students pursuing school education. That incidentally is the interpretation of the true Latin text which Dayasiri Jayasekera pronounced ambiguously. That video which circulated around the social media, from below

Organisers of wedding ceremonies these days desire outstanding changes. Published here is an incident that took place at a certain wedding ceremony. When the wedding couple was seated at the end of all customary procedures, it was a
devil-dancer that appeared as an item to stimulate the ceremonial audience.

The devil-dancer having made the couple become the 'patients' in this case would bring out numerous stories in the presence of the audience and then engage in posing questions in public asking such things as 'how many children do you wish to bring up?' thus creating embarassment to the couple at various points. This devil-dancer who does not stop there would move towards places where each person is seated and begin to make various remarks of a humourous nature. That quaint wedding item, from the video below

Angelo Matthews tenders his resignation!

It has been verbally informed last evening to the Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee by Angelo Matthews that he has decided to resign from his position as Captain of Sri Lanka Cricket team with immediate effect.

He has announced this during the course of the discussion held this afternoon in the face of the
astounding defeat at the last game with Zimbabwe and the Selection Committee has consented to this decision. As such, another player would be handling the Sri Lankan team at the Test match scheduled to be played against Zimbabwe next 14th Friday. As presently understood, that position would be transferred on the shoulders of Rangana Herath. However, names of Upul Tharanga and Dinesh Chandimal have been subjected to discussion in that connection. In fact Matthews had been awaiting to meet players in the team to announce his decision officially this morning (12).

"Charlie Austin is someone like my driver ... Sanath was included as an additional player, for political reasons" --

The discussion which former captain of the Sri Lankan Cricket team Mahela Jayawardena had with BBC Sinhala Service about the fate that has befallen on the game of Cricket in Sri Lanka would be significant in relation to the Cricket crisis that has raised its head these days.

"Other than my Cricket I appoint another party for my other work. Other than that none of us work for
Charlie Austin as such. It's like as if I normally take a driver to get my work done. Whatever it is, it is good if a check is carried out on the managers and thus bring in administration. That control is not only for managers it should be so where Cricket authorities and for politics too. I wish to say with responsibility that when I was captaining in England in 2006 the Sports Minister sends an additional player asking that he also be taken. Those too are influences and those too should be controlled.

Even before 2 years ago and 10 years back I said that if Cricket is to advance, a First Class tournament should be launched. What we have is Cricketing problems and it's those things that should be remedied. When things like these happen the players become divided. What we play are not good matches. We should get together with the best players and play with them". (According to Mahela the additional player introduced is former Cricket captain Sanath Jayasuriya). The video containing the discussion including sensational revelations of Mahela, from below

Upul Tharanga and Chandimal appointed -- A hint from Sanath to Sanga and Mahela

Angelo Matthews said at the media briefing held today to express his decision of bidding goodbye to his position as Captain and added that he is not selfish and is not greedy enough to keep hugging to a post and that he took this decision to provide the opportunity for a new player to achieve success.

After Angelo it will be Upul Tharanga who will be captain of 20/20 and Dinesh Chandimal will be
the captain for Tests. Sanath Jayasuriya who expressed his opinion at the media briefing valued Upul Tharanga and said that by sacrificing his position he played down the line and that it was a sacrifice which even distinguished players did not want to commit ... thus hinting at Mahela and Sanga in the process. Rumours that Charlie Austin got commission ... a hoax -- Sangakkara

Former Sri Lanka senior cricketer Kumar Sangakkara made a speech to the media yesterday across skype with regard to the point that his name too is linked in the Cricket crisis and Charlie Austin which has circulated around these days.

"I have no power to bring anybody to the country or to expel someone from the country. I think it was from about 2004 that I engaged Charlie Austin as my Manager and before that he was in service as Mahela Jayawardena's
Manager. I engaged Charlie Austin in order to advance my game of cricket, to show skill and from there onwards to manage other tasks and activities. But Charlie Austin of course didn't employ me as such. That's
because Charlie Austin works for me.

Sports Management is not something new to Cricket in the world. Every player around the world works in unison with a Private Manager or group of Managers. They are there only for duties beyond National Cricket. There's no alliance with the Manager where National Cricket is concerned. The Private Manager does not get involved in the contract given to us by the Cricket Control Board or ICC Cricket. Neither does any share of that money flow to their pocket. They can't make any impact whatsoever. What is humorous is the point that we are used as scapegoats by Charlie Austin to create influence when we are holding the position of Captain or now and about using a present Captain to operate as his mouthpiece. Charlie Austin gains no profit even if he does so. He doesn't receive any money from it either.

If I am a Captain my captainship depends on match victories. If matches are lost ... my captainship is gone. If I don't show skills ... my cricketing life too is over. My duty rests not on the requirements of a manager or of the necessity of another or to make a favourite player of mine play the game but to place before the Selection Committee as to the players who are capable of effecting a victory.

If you are to say so ... I have worked with Presidents of the Selection Committee such as Asantha de Mel and Aravinda de Silva. It is a humiliation to them also when somebody from outside says something like this. If considered truly, this is an attempt to prevent speaking out by diverting our minds in another direction towards a conspiracy without talking about what is necessary but for the sake of the necessity of some others. It may be for mine or for Mahela's ... these things may be done to make a blackmark on our characters. If the truth or falsity is discussed and this is viewed with proper understanding, it would be automatically understood that there's no truth in this".
