Eldest son notified before Kamburupitiya deaths occured: "You'll see our deaths!"

Police who are engaged in carrying out investigations on the incident where a father and 3 children have committed suicide hanging themselves bringing a shock to all those in Kamburupitiya area have come across certain documents indicating that all those deaths were carried out on the will of the deceased members of the family.

It was a father, 2 daughters and 1 son from a poverty-stricken family who had committed suicide. While the youngest son was a samanera, there is
an elder son who has already entered the Bhikku Sasana. It was a month ago that the wife had deserted her husband and children as a consequence of a domestic issue. Subsequently all work connected to the two daughters and management of the house had fallen on the shoulders of the father and thus it had been a difficult task for him to handle it single-handedly. The father has had no proper income and they had gone without food during the past few days, it was reported. In the meantime the youngest son who was handed over to the Sasana had come to the house some days before this macabre incident.

"We have no way of going to school. People are telling various stories. Father didn't eat or drink. Podi sadhu came home. We were in favour of the decision father took. You'll see the dead bodies of the three of us". The police were able to recover notes containing the above words written in a letter to their eldest brother who was a monk, before these deaths by one of the sisters.

The Thera Ransegoda Sudaththa the eldest son who has entered the Sasana and is residing in a temple in Ratnapura area having been informed about this tragedy had gone into a state of shock and after arriving at the house gave evidence in this connection and said that one of his sisters had contacted him over the phone and informed him that all of them were going to commit suicide but that he had not believed those words at that moment itself. However, on the phone call given the last time it had been mentioned that 'father was tying the hands of the other children and that all of them will be committing suicide' at which moment the thera had got upset. The referred to earlier document was located in a bag place on another tree nearby after the dead bodies were found hanging on a tree close to the yard of the house that went up in fire.

Though these letters were found written by the 3 children yesterday (27), what was suspicious is that these deaths apparently gave the impression that the act was preplanned. The letters bore the date of last 18th  and it is not clear whether a mistake was made in the date or whether those were written in advance. The police also recovered a letter written by the deceased father signed on top of a stamp to the effect making a request not to let his wife see his body.

As a result of this tragedy the whole family were destroyed and it is the mother who deserted and the 19 year old eldest child who were thus left. In this connection the 3 children, 14 year old other thera by the name of Ranpegoda Mangala, 16 year old Kaushalya Sewwandi, 10 year old Hiruni Sewwandi and 44 year old Pathiranage Priyantha the father who had committed suicide.

The police say that the hands of the 3 children were found tied from behind. It has been observed at inquiries that the children had been made to stand on a chair and after putting the noose round their necks had pulled the chairs away in the end. It was understood that the father had finally put an end to his life too by climbing a tree and putting the noose round his neck.  These deaths were observed when police received a telephone call to the 119 Police Emergency Unit day-before-yesterday (26) at about 9.45 in the night that a house is on fire in Beraliathura and when they proceeded to arrive at the location concerned and conducted investigations.

Mercedes Benz driven by millionaire's 15 year old son somersaults in Vajira Road!

A Mercedes Benz which on last 26th evening was travelling at a hectic speed coming from Colombo Thunmulla had taken a turn into Vajira Road at the same speed and finally skidded and ended up close to the pavement on the road ... finishing with a somersault. Fortunately as there had been no pedestrians on that part of the road at that time, no one has been injured in this accident.

Incidentally the individual who emerged from the driving-seat then in an upside-down state, was a
schoolboy of a tender age. Though he was not harmed in the process, police officers who had been posted on duty in charge of traffic regulations at that time had arrived on the scene to check the driver when they were baffled to come across a student who was just 15 years old and was even without a driving license. It was with a smile that he had told the police officers that he had desired to take to the wheel of the Benz his father had newly bought. So saying he had then wanted to return home ... without scant knowledge about traffic rules and regulations. When the police told him that he is to be taken into custody for offences of negligent driving and for being without a valid driving license he had then become upset and had begun to give telephone calls all over the place.

His father is supposed to be a millionaire businessman hailing from Kurunduwatta area and had spoken to police higher ups and other police officers, throwing his influence about requesting them to send his son home. Even Ministers and those of the affluent class have contacted Kurunduwatta Police and other police officers incessantly over this matter, it is understood. However the 15 year old schoolboy who failed to furnish a valid driving license was ultimately taken into custody by the police and after the boy's parents arrived at the police station they had made a pledge to produce him before courts after which he was released on police bail within the space of a few hours.

Who the said businessman has not been exposed by the police. Information that this Mercedes-type Benz vehicle bears the registered No. CAW 5445 and is one of the latest models manufactured in 2017 and has been taken on a leasing basis from Nations Trust Bank, is now revealed.

Vidya of Jaffna sexually abused ... for a blue video displaying a money-generating rape-video!

The incident where 17 years old schoolgirl Vidya studying at Punkudithi Maha Vidyalaya in Jaffna was kidnapped in the year 2015 and was subjected to collective rape being murdered subsequently which was an incident that created a big uproar. What was mentioned in reports published at that time was that a relative who fell out with Vidya's mother over an argument between the two of them ended up in an act of revenge where her daughter was collectively raped by this person engaging the services of another party. But it was revealed in courts yesterday that this act of collective rape and subsequent murder was committed for the purpose of creating a blue video, which activity is in operation on an international level as revealed at the hearing of the case of which investigations are underway.
person engaging the services of another party. But it was revealed in courts yesterday that this act of collective rape and subsequent murder was committed for the purpose of creating a blue video, which activity is in operation on an international level as revealed at the hearing of the case of which investigations are underway.

Parts of the said video is supposed to have been marketed in Switzerland, it has been revealed. Acting Attorney General Mr. Dappula de Livera revealed yesterday about this that the rape scenes had been captured on video and then marketed and also that female children and young girls in South Asia are being subjected to sexual abuse and that those contents after being taped are being marketed by a profit-generating business which happens to be at the root of this racket. This information has further been confirmed when investigations have found that an underhand international mode of transactions were in operation for release of the individuals who had committed this criminal offence after they were apprehended, which information had leaked out in the process. Mr. de Livera further expressed yesterday that an inquiry has been launched in this connection with those involved in trying to protect those responsible for this crime and that there had even been an attempt to throw investigations under the carpet for a deal of Rs. 20 million.

9 persons of the 12 suspects arrested with respect to the crime of abduction of the schoolgirl studying at Jaffna Punkudithiv Maha Vidyalaya on May 13 in the year 2015 for having murdered this girl after being collectively raped were served indictments by the Attorney General. Mr. de Livera quoting certain other points further said, "It is for the first time in the history of the island that a case is heard in the presence of a bench of judges comprising 3 judges. Schoolgirl Vidya has been abducted according to a premeditated plan and then sexually molested and finally murdered. This murder has been committed at about 7.30 in the morning of May 13 in the year 2015.

The 9th suspect of the murder can be identified as having organised the crime. It has been tried to market the said video after videoing the rape proceedings. Though he had been here, he is someone who has attained Swiss citizenship. He has arrived here on and off from Switzerland. While being in Switzerland he has got together with 6 suspects and has preplanned this crime.

Female children and young girls of South Asia are being subjected to sexual abuse and after videoing the act it is being marketed at an exorbitant sum of money. Though the 9th suspect of the murder has sought the help of a head of police offering him Rs. 20 million requesting him to be released. The 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th defendants have been involved in raping the student. They have raped her in turn. The 5th and 6th suspects are responsible for having taped the rape scenes from their mobile phones. Subsequently that video has been sold to a foreigner. Attempt to secure the said video has been futile. However, evidence to the effect that the video was marketed could of course be secured.

The 2nd, 3rd and 6th suspects have raped the student inside a lonely house. After that, the student's body has been carried to where it was finally located and after her hands and feet were tied up, she was throttled and killed. The student has sustained injuries to her head. Maximum punishment should be meted out for this crime in accordance with the law. I believe that a decision should be pronounced where crimes of this nature would not rear its head once more".

Personal matters not relevant in official duties -- response from Saranga about what Umali did

This is how Saranga Disasekera responded to a question posed to him by a radio channel about an incident which transpired on stage at Raigam Award Festival held recently.

"If that award was given to another actress who was nominated other than she ... it will be the same questions that I would have asked her too. What I did was carry out my duties. She spoke what she
wanted to say. After that incident that night at the award ceremony many accomplished people in the Field of Arts contacted me. What they said was that what was uttered was something that should not have been uttered and not what actually should be uttered.

They valued what I said. What I have to say is that I never confuse my job with personal matters. I am not sorry about what happened. Sometimes she also may have later realised that what she stated was in vain. That was not a place where personal matters are expressed. She didn't speak to me later".

Internet which made Pakistan female announcer's fainting ... an instance of death

An announcement is noted where one particular news report are circulating these days even in prominent media circles in Sri Lanka without checking about its authenticity and is spreading around as a hoax like 'viral news' in the internet. The striking video which speaks about a Pakistan Rupavahini announcer embracing death during the course of a live recording is one such video.

How this lady adorned with charming looks collapses from a crane with half of her eyes
closed apparently suffering from dizziness and later being carried by the crowd is portrayed in this video. This particular video accompanied by the news clip which spread across the Facebook to a large degree said that she passed away on that occasion and the cause of death was a sudden heart attack.

However when we cared to inquire about this we were able to find that this news was totally false and that this news was initially woven by a certain Indian Social Media Page with the motive of their propagation. This female announcer called Irza Khan who is attached to 92News Channel in Pakistan is still among the living in a hale and hearty manner. The incident concerned was that, in 2016 on the occasion that she was engaged in reporting about a rally of Tehric E Party as a live broadcast perching on a crane outdoors had been exposed to the hot sun and had thus suffered a fainting attack and had fallen from above. But those in the near vicinity had got hold of her and directed her for treatment and only after a short while that she had been away from her duties had subsequently resumed her live broadcast.

Even at present she is a popular character in Pakistan broadcasting channels and as a result of news circulating around from recent times that she had died, her fans as well as she herself had been amazed. Under these circumstances she had yesterday released a video across her Facebook Page that "I am quite alright". The viral video which was the basis of a piece of news which had no foundation as such and the video released by her yesterday, from below

Kottawa lover gave calls to his village girl friend ... but she didn't leave me; I thought that the photos and clips would become an issue -- Hakmana boy friend

A youth who was taken into custody over the murder of Tharindi Aloka who was hacked to death by a supposed lover anticipating marriage at a house down Horana Road, Kottawa sometime back is presumably a businessman in Hakmana and according to the latest information revealed by him it is now understood that the murder was carried out for different reasons other than the reasons discovered earlier.

It has now been revealed that this murder was committed in a fury not because of the telephone calls given by deceased Tharindi to the village girl friend of the Hakmana youth who played a double
game and as a result of which he had lost both ends while instead the genuine situation is somewhat contradictory to reports published initially, as now reported. The true happening is that after this mess up created news, the Hakmana youth's village lover has suspected him; but has not isolated him. In fact it was in the following week that they had fixed the date for their engagement and even at the time Tharindi was murdered she had supported him to find a way out of this predicament. Then for what reason does he kill Tharindi?

When questioning the youth continuously by police about this point the youth had confessed a story about photos and video clips. On interrogating he had revealed that some photos clicked together during the romance between him and Tharindi together with some video tapes had created a problem to the extent that it would end in an issue for having been involved in another affair and that copies of those were in possession of both him and Tharindi. After the village girl friend sniffed about the affair between him and Tharindi she had not been on good terms with him for for a short period of time; but though the connection between Tharindi and him as well as the other affair spanned a period of 2 years the call given by Tharindi to his village girl friend was however not strong enough for her to abandon him as such, the youth has confessed.

He has also confessed that Tharindi had strong evidence of his village girl friend was available in the said photos and video clips and that he murdered Tharindi that day for the purpose of destroying that evidence, he had confessed. He had further remarked that he believed that this evidence is available in Tharindi's mobile phone or computer and that after calling his distant lover after she fell out with him she had by telephoning his village lover, Tharindi had threatened him and told him that she would provide and expose that evidence to his Hakmana girl friend and thus destroy that connection. He finally confessed that the reason that Tharindi had gone into such a rage was not only because he had an affair with his village girl friend but as it was seriously revealed to Tharindi that a date had been fixed for his engagement with the other girl.

This youth murders Tharindi last 22nd when arrangements had already been made for the engagement with his Hakmana girl friend for the 28th. The fact that if the marriage took place when Tharindi was among the living, it was strongly etched in his mind that the said marriage would definitely go on the rocks and therefore he had taken steps to hide on the top floor on the 21st and had in that manner made plans to carry out the murder the next day, he had said. Though he had however given a call to his village girl friend after murdering Tharindi she of course had taken his side and had told him to come and meet her, he had confessed. As such though he had entertained thoughts of committing suicide by jumping in front of a moving train; he had subsequently relinquished that idea too.

This young man who was maintaining an agency in Hakmana of directing pilgrimages and sending people overseas had got involved with Tharindi's affluent parents and joined in business activities in the year 2013. During that period he had provided members of Tharindi's family opportunities of foreign travel and had thus developed a close-knit association with them. It was after that he had brought forward a marriage proposal to the deceased daughter who happened to be a charming girl. Members of Tharindi's family has had no reasons to show a negative response in that connection.

Whatever it is, while enjoying the romance of the proposed marriage he had also activated the schoolboy love in his hometown unknown to each other, thus maintaining a dual affair. Since dealings with the Colombo family turned out to be important and profitable by way of certain business matters it is said that he kept on the connection continuously between the two girls. In the end as the cat was out of the bag with both parties coming to know this clandestine activity the Hakmana youth had suffered a frustrated mental condition. His attempt to cover up the blunders he made by an act of homicide had misfired and finally he has had to suffer behind bars.

Loathsome story by villagers about 4 suicides in Kamburupitiya

Loathsome story by villagers about 4 suicides in Kamburupitiya

A story that had yet not come into the open about the tragic incident of a suicide of 2 daughters, a son who was a samanera and their father in Kamburupitiya which rocked the country some weeks before has now been revealed a hidden side to the story which has been going the rounds all over this particular village.

That story which is unfolded in written records left behind by the father prior to committing suicide
with his children is to some extent a sorrowful one. On the other hand it is one that sends a chill through one's spine. What the villagers say is that because the mother of the 16 year old daughter had come to know of an alliance with the girl's father, a dispute had flared up and the mother had left the house which finally paved the way towards this tragedy. What was published in the media after the incident of suicide that the father who was faced with difficulties of maintaining the children accompanied with the sadness of the wife desolating them, he had committed this revengeful deed for the wife to feel its awful repercussions. Reports were further published that on account of the argument which flared up with the husband not agreeing for the wife giving permission for her to go for an overseas job had left the house. However the tendency for women leaving for jobs abroad was a common occurence in this Kamburupitiya hamlet.

Incidentally the father and mother of this family were engaged in cinnamon-peeling as a form of income. Though it was possible to earn a good income only during one period of the year of the cinnamon season it was at all times a difficult task for them to spend the rest of the year. For the very reason that this couple were faced with financial burdens they had dedicated the elder and the younger sons to the Sasana. With these conditions of this woman going abroad (as is seen happening in a number of neighbouring houses) for the purpose of maintaining the family resulting in such a cruel decision is somewhat of an incredible story as such.

After the tragedy of the suicides what the 19 year old thera who was the only individual of the children who were left behind has said that on occasions when disputes such as this happened before the mother was of the habit of leaving home and remaining at the ancestral home and returning after a short period. This time too it was to her ancestral home that she had gone. What was noted as something different in this instance was that her mobile phone had been switched off from the date she had left home and that instructions had been given to respond saying that she was not there. After the mother had left home the deceased 2 daughters had gone in search of the mother and the grandmother and has inquired as to whether mother had come when it was said that she had not come there and thus the 2 girls had been sent back empty-handed unlike in other instances. However when the daughters had inquired from the marketplace near grandmother's house tit had been confirmed that she is in fact at the ancestral place. This was recorded  clearly in a letter of one of the deceased daughters.

The reason why the wife who was vexed with her husband because of the exchange of words that transpired over the matter of employment was not able to engage in baby-sitting at another house is a matter of conjecture. During the period she was away at her ancestral home she has not communicated with anybody in her house  and just about two days before the suicides had called from a telephone box and informed that she had secured a job at a garment factory and would be coming the day after bringing the salary.

Whatever it is, though the husband and children had been continuously waiting for her arrival which proved futile afterwards had confirmed the attempt of suicide the father issueing necessary instructions to the children, it was stated in the letters. The elder daughter had informed about her despondency to the elder brother, the thera writing "people in the village have coined up various stories" and had further mentioned that the villagers have woven stories about her and father about a connection between the two of them and that those rumours have become confirmed as a consequence of mother's departure.

The incident of the disgusted father taking steps to asking the 2 daughters and the son to keep their hands behind their backs and made them hang with a rope tied with he himself taking away his life has indeed created a sensation in the whole country and having come to know about this the thera son the only living child who arrived the same day from Ratnapura was shocked and proceeded to provide evidence. But all in all the wife who was instrumental in a dispute with her deceased husband had not turned up even on that occasion. What is even more surprising is that after so many days passed by after the tragedy and even after the final rites of the deceased were over, she had still not come. The fact that she had not cared to see the faces of the children who was begotten by her and that of her husband for the last time further discloses the mystery embedded in the reasons for this deaths. Whatever it is, it is not clear whether it was so done because of the fear and embarassment of rumours of the villagers or because of the final request made on paper signed on a stamp not to let the wife see their faces.

Robbers who ransacked 77 lakhs of salary-pay in Ragama ... apprehended

The sum of Rs. 77 lakhs transported in a van being the month-end salaries to a private firm situated along Kadawatha Road, Ragama last 26th when a gang had come in a motor vehicle had fled after plundering this money. It is of special significance to note that police were efficient enough to apprehend the robbers concerned within the space of a week.

This robbery was committed after having pursued the van carrying salaries of a certain garment
factory situated in Wattala after which the vehicle was blocked and weapons were shown to the occupants in the van. After the robbery the marauders had opened fire on two wheels of the van after which they had got into the motor vehicle and beat a retreat towards Kadawatha. Clues were received that there were 4 robbers inside the motor vehicle.

A particular employee who was sacked from service from this garment factory a few days ago had provided information to another group and this robbery had been thus carried out in this manner, it was found. This information was exposed when 5 suspects inclusive of the main suspect S.F. Jagath were taken into custody by the crime branch of Peliyagoda Division yesterday (03) in which instance this information was confirmed.

Police say that it was possible to recover two T56 weapons, 46 rounds of ammunition, 2 magazines, a motor vehicle, mobile phones and a cash sum of Rs. forty lakhs and fifty one lakhs of the robbed money in the possession of the suspects. About 2 weeks before the robbery the sacked employee of the garment factory had been engaged in a game of poker at a funeral house when he had come across this marauder and on that occasion he had given a tip-off to carry out this robbery.

It has been found that S.F. Jagath is a deserter of the Sri Lanka Army as revealed in the investigations. After acquiring the said information S.F. Jagath had conveyed this information to a friend by the name of Pushpe living in Tangalla area. Having secured two T56 weapons required for the robbery with the support of a Lance Corporal attached to Sri Lanka Army Maduru Oya Camp, had joined the team of robbers. The motor vehicle which was necessary for the robbery too was secured from Matara after paying Rs. 23,000 on a rental basis for a period of 2
days. In order to change number plates of the vehicle, they had removed a number plate from a motor vehicle from a place where vehicles were repaired in Kalalgoda area in Talangama last 29th night, it was revealed at inquiries.

The team of robbers comprising 5 members had given chase to the van carrying monies of the said commercial establishment and after aiming three gunshots had grabbed the bag of money and then fled. A Welder too is connected to the robbery and the sacked employee who provided the clue was remunerated with Rs. 5 lakhs by S.F. Jagath while other members of the gang were paid Rs. 14 lakhs each, he had confessed in the presence of the police.

After the 5 suspects were produced before Negombo Magistrate Court yesterday (03) are now being subjected to interrogation under 24 hours detention orders, police say. The Police Spokesman mentioned that in securing information for the raid the most modern technological equipment not used previously were utilised. Published below is a report on the day of the incident

Death sentence to 'Paint baas' who came with motive of robbery and murdered News Correspondent Mel in Rajagiriya house after others went to church

The final verdict of the case relating to the murder of News Correspondent Mel Gunasekera at the hands of a person who came with the motive of robbery to a house in Rajagiriya 3 years back in the month of December, 2014 was pronounced today. As such, Samson Anthony George (42), a 'paint baas' was found guilty on three counts of having made illegal entry to a premises, stealing a mobile phone and homicide and thus was sentenced to death.

The deceased News Correspondent was murdered quite unanticipatedly in her home at a time when
members of her family had gone to church on Sunday and the suspect had gained entry to the house concerned on the sly. This person who had been in and out of this house time and again for paint-work was well aware of activities around the house and having known in advance that nobody would be in the house on Sunday morning had moved into the house that day. However, as Miss Mel was engaged in some activity that day she had told other members of her family to go to church and thus remained at home when she happened to catch the burglar red-handed.

This assailant Samson Anthony George, was 42 years old and a father of 2 children. He was earning his income by engaging in labour-work and was a resident of Dompe area. It was about one and a half months before the murder that the suspect was engaged as a paint baas through connections of a friend of his for painting-work at News Correspondent Mel Gunasekera's home. Close upon the incident he had on and off for 3 days come to this house and engaged in paint-work and had also understood that people in this house belonged to the elite class because of the polythene-manufacturing workshop owned by Miss Mel Gunasekera's father Mr. Gunasekera which was situated in the adjoining piece of land.

He was accustomed to committing minor thefts from places where he used to go for painting-work. When he was getting ready to come there for paint-work on a Sunday and as people in the house would not be in the house that morning they had told him not to come that day. As he knew that they would be leaving to church around 6.15 in the morning, George had made plans to enter the said house at about 6.30 in the morning with the purpose of committing the robbery.

At the time he was scaling the wall to enter the premises though the dogs have barked, since he was familiar with them he was able to enter the house without any worry as such. There were 4 dogs in this house and since he had made himself familiar with them during days when he was engaged in paint-work there by patting them on the head and feeding them, it turned out to his advantage. As the door of the house was shut, as preplanned by him he managed to open the grill of a window of the room with the aid of a chisel and thus jumped inside. In fact what he had thought was that there was nobody in the house. However as Miss Mel was involved in some activity on the top floor she had not been aware at that time that a burglar was upto his tricks downstairs.

In the meantime George who was searching for something valuable in the room and had been moving across the hall with the hope of making a search in other rooms he happened to be confronted by Miss Mel who was coming towards the kitchen and that was face to face. Having understood that it was a burglar who had entered the house at a time that nobody was inside the house she had become bewildered and after having realised that he was none other than their 'paint baas' she had queried "what are you doing here?" in a surprised tone. Even at that moment Miss Mel noticed that there were certain items that he had robbed already in his possession.

In this instance George who dreaded that having been identified and getting caught red-handed and that he would be handed over to police, instantly had jumped towards her with the idea of killing her so that evidence about him could thus be destroyed. For this purpose he had rushed towards the kitchen and after arming himself with two pointed knives had dashed towards her and all what Miss Mel who became helpless could do was give out a shriek. Her yell ended up with her neck being severed and finally her life ebbing away.

Consequent to the incident George baas was scared in delaying there anymore for fear of unanticipated obstacles. His clothes too were soaked with her blood. After having picked up the deceased's valuable mobile phone fallen beside her had searched an almirah in the house for money. But he was able to find only a small sum of money amounting to Rs. 1200. Ultimately he had robbed some male clothing and a bag in that almirah for the reason that he was not in a position of leaving the house with blood-stained clothes. Finally he had decided to immediately flee from the house after packing the blood-stained clothing in the bag and dressing himself with the robbed clothes, all in secret.

Members in the house had of course come to know that a murder had occured in the house after they returned home from church. On seeing Miss Mel lying in a pool of blood in the kitchen had been shocked and had instantly notified police. Police who cordoned the house as a location of crime commenced investigations allowing only relatives to enter the house. Police dogs were used for this purpose and were able to track some suspected fingerprints.

A person in the neighbourhood had told police that someone yelling was heard at the said time but had not taken an interest about it later. The police took an interest to contact other houses in the vicinity and check their CCTV camera systems. When checking the CCTV system video of one house at the time when Miss Mel was in the house alone, it was able to detect how a person was approaching this house and how he was leaving the house in a short while.

After the police summoned residents of Mel's house to inquire whether the person seen on the video could be identified, a certain clue was secured in the process. What they had said was, "this is our paint baas no ..!" It was in that manner that the address of the paint baas hailing from Dompe who had been painting the house concerned for sometime, was secured by police.

George who was responsible for the homicide had set off to Hanwella from Battaramulla. When arriving in Dompe by bus darkness had already set in. He had had a good bout of alcohol by spending 500 from the Rs. 1200 in his possession and had walked back home as usual. He had taken the scene of this murder committed in the morning out of his mind. But by the time he returned home he was dumbfounded. The police who had surrounded his house were actually awaiting his arrival. On apprehending the criminal Miss Mel's Blackberry mobile phone too was found by police, thus confirming CCTV evidence.

The point as to why this 'bad baas' was cruel enough to commit a murder without understanding the value of a person, solely for the sake of financial necessity is a matter of conjecture. A lady Correspondent connected to activities on an international level with abundant experience leaving this world at an untold moment was lost to the country and it is indeed a cause of sorrow and shock. After these offences and crime of George Baas were found guilty he was sentenced to death by court today.

Government brings down 400 million worth equipment to listen to mobile phones on the sly and to monitor Facebook -- revelation from Udaya Gammanpila

Udaya Gammanpila, Member of Parliament quipped at a media briefing held yesterday that he would be making a special revelation saying that the incumbent government has brought down surveillance equipment by spending over Rs. one million and four hundred to overhear mobile phones on the sly and for surveillance of activities operating in Facebook Accounts.

This is what he said: "President Sirisena's Policy statement had mentioned a marvellous thing at the
last Presidential Election. The Rajapaksa regime listens secretly to telephone conversations of anti-government politicians. What they said was that 'when we come to power we won't engage in uncivilised acts of that nature'. During the Rajapaksa Regime it was possible to listen to fixed telephones only. But the present government got down an equipment from the United States of America recently. That equipment was brought to listen to mobile phones in secret. It is N. Able and Company who act as its local representative.

If some party wishes to listen secretly to mobile phones in secret across this equipment, permission should be secured from mobile telephone companies to connect with one's own network. If not, the code number known as encryption code should be provided to the government. Though this equipment was brought, it is not possible to give ear in secret to your or my mobile phone in secret without permission of mobile phone companies.

We of course spy on spies. If mobile telephone companies provide their code numbers to the government, we will expose that you have provided it. After that nobody would come forward to acquire telephone services of those companies. We would be taking action against this because it is contradictory to the people's mandate. The government which spoke about freedom of the media and said that no room would be left for violation of individuals of course has no right to interfere with people's individuality.

This government has already spent Rs. 400 million and got down Facebook surveillance equipment. It operates under the institution which comes under the Defence Ministry known as CRD or Centre for Research and Development. Every activity you carry out on Facebook is seriously monitored and examined by the government. You may remember that youth Facebook activists took a major hand in defeating Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Presidential Election. He was seriously slandered. But Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa took no action to  try and control those who were active in the Facebook. Neither did he take them into custody.

"Mata Qatar epo!  ... I'm resigning!!"

House and property businessman ASP Liyanage in order to reveal his suffering has called for a media briefing today (5) bringing out his grievances saying that what he wants is a position of governor and not a position of ambassador in a foreign country.

During the last regime Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed him as the ambassador to Nigeria and had later Mr. Liyanage came forward to contest as a candidate for the position of President; but even though Mahinda was defeated he did not leave him aside and went to the extent of taking steps to
offer Mahinda the Peacock Mansion belonging to him down Koswatta Road, Nawala for him to reside in Colombo. Whatever it is, on suspicion that Mahinda had acquired the place after paying him money, he was subjected to interrogation by the FCID but managed to scrape his way through those involvements after a short time by making his way to the stage and garlanding President Maithri at a meeting held in Galle.

Sometime later he was appointed as ambassador to the Kingdom of Qatar and he wholeheartedly accepted that post and even invited and got down MPs and Ministers and prominent politicians after organising a party to rejoice in his happiness. In any case as a result of the taboos and impediments issued by Arab countries some months ago during his period of service in Qatar he found it a difficult task to carry out his work in the capacity of ambassador there.

As Mr. Austin Fernando was appointed to the position of President's Secretary the post of governor of East which was upto then handled by Mr. Austin falling vacant as a result and ASP Liyanage had been keeping his fingers crossed to grab that position from Qatar. As he was gripped with faith that he could receive that post because someone had confirmed it to be so, he had arrived in Sri Lanka day-before-yesterday. However, dashing all his hopes most unexpectedly it was Maithri-comrade Rohitha Bogollagama, a former Minister who in fact took his oaths for that post. As a consequence, ASP Liyanage who was utterly disappointed because of such a decision hastened to summon a media meeting to present his woes.

"What I want is to remain in Sri Lanka ... I don't want ambassadorship in Qatar ... I'm resigning!" he had aired his sorrow like a small child. House and property businessman ASP Liyanage who was instrumental in presenting "Kavuluva' through the cinema, Othello on stage and 'Himi Ahimi' via Rupavahini went on to present 'Peduru Sajjaya' across TNL Channel and for a period of time was someone who brought entertainment to the public.

Ragama 77 lakhs robbery ... to buy vaccine for father, a cancer patient -- informant's confession

Police who are conducting investigations about the Ragama 77 lakhs robbery which created a sensation in the country sometime back have been informed of a son who as a result of being gripped with paternal affection and love because of financial shortage to meet requirements for the father's treatment had as a consequence tried to find that money even by resorting to crime.

This robbery took place when a gang of robbers had blocked the van carrying cash of that establishment on a clue given by an employee who incidentally was sacked by Wattala 'Kandy'
garment outlet. This employee was not connected to any crime before as such and at a conversation that took place with the leader of a gang of robbers named Jagath whom he had come across at a gambling den had put forward the proposition of robbing the money. He had mentioned that lakhs of money could be robbed and that he wanted only 5 lakhs from it. As agreed, he was able to get that 5 lakhs after the successfully conducted robbery.

Harshana, this 20 year old youngster who left school recently had spent 2 lakhs from the 5 lakhs given him by the robbers and had spent it on cancer vaccines for his father, who has been hospitalised, it was revealed at investigations. It was revealed that the gang of robbers had shared the 15 lakhs each among them and later given 6 lakhs to their informant.

He had also informed that though his father's condition has aggravated because of financial shortage, treatment was delayed and in the process because of a problem in his employment he lost his job and therefore had come to the conclusion of securing money even by getting involved in a robbery and had thereby given out this secret to the robbers. By now all suspects involved in this robbery have been nabbed and have provided the lakhs of money from places where they had hid the money, to the police. By the 3rd it has been possible to recover 40 lakhs of the stolen money, Kelaniya Police inform.
