How cycling champion Ananda Wedisinha's fatal accident occured (video)

Accomplished champion and veteran motor cyclist Ananda Wedisingha passed away last afternoon (29) being under treatment at the Intensive Care Unit for a period of about 5 weeks having been in Kandy General Hospital after meeting with an accident last April 23rd at the Nuwara Eliya Road motor vehicle and motor cycle race. The cause of death were injuries
sustained after Wedisingha's head had struck a block of wood and a severe fracture on one of his legs.

At the time of his death he was 47 years old and a father of 4 children. He was in a conscious state until the moment of death and family members came to know that treatment for him could be carried out in Japan to cure his condition; but his wife and children could not secure the sum of about 39 million which was required for the treatment.

Wedisingha who won the Best Motor cyclist Award consecutively on 6 occasions in the Nariyakanda Supercross competition was also the winner of the National Motorcross Championship several times. He is also popular as a person who helped the Sri Lanka Army and soldiers quite often.

Ananda Wedisingha met with this accident at Nuwara Eliya race in the Super Motor race when Suraj Perera's motor cycle struck his motor cycle. As both got entangled both of them were unable to control their motor cycles and Wedisingha's motor cycle which lost control then struck against a protective railing and rider Wedisingha got thrown off. His head struck a wooden log and one of his legs was severely fractured. Initially he was admitted to Nuwara Eliya Hospital; but there were not sufficient facilities there to attend to his condition and was therefore transferred to Kandy General Hospital. Finally he passed away there. The video secured at the moment of the accident, from below

Swarnavahini Live Chart Show goes on non-stop -- changes made in dialogue -- Rahul still 'on his feet'

A big talk went round internet last week because of an aggressive remark made by a certain announcer of Swarnavahini as response to a call by a listener to the effect that it is not suitable to conduct a Live Chart Show at a time when incidents of a sorrowful nature are being reported because of a situation of disaster in the country.

Though various people published requests asking
that programmes of this type be temporarily stopped, Swarnavahini has still not acceded to their pleas as such to temporarily curtail such programmes. The Live Chart Show which is broadcast on Tuesday and day-before-yesterday Monday in the evenings was presented as usual by this channel. However, this programme which was presented this week had taken a different 'facelift' this time in contrary to the one presented earlier in an entertainment mood by Kavindya - Rahul. In addition the aid given and the victims concerned were continuously spoken of about with songs being broadcast in the process.

Whatever it is, no action has been taken by the channel over the referred to programme of Kavindya - Rahul which incident created some uproar recently and it was broadcast even yesterday beforehand that the two of them would be handling the programme next week too. In any case it has been detected that some private channels have temporarily suspended programmes of like- nature by now. Certain channels have been noted to have broadcast old recorded programmes as a substitute at those relevant times. How Live Chart Show talk took a different turn at yesterday's programme can be seen, below

Rahal -- Kavindya programme which unnerved the audience ... brought to a close!

The occasion where a female voice over the phone spoke during the process of 'the Top Ten Super Hits' Chart Show programme broadcast live across Swarnavahini channel between 9 - 10 in the morning hours happened to query about presenting the Show during the time of a sorrowful moment when a disaster such as floods was in the news incidentally flared up the anger
of the announcer Rahal who replied her saying "Don't make me lose my temper!" ultimately creating a ha-ho.

The idea of the female announcer who pointed out that an entertainment aspect such as Chart Show was not conducive to the occasion was not respected by the channel concerned until last Tuesday and even other Chart Show programmes of theirs were presented with a dialogue related to the floods. At that time an announcement was relayed that Rahal and Kavindya would be appearing once more on Saturday.

Whatever it is, today 3rd Saturday the said programme of Rahal and Kavindya was not broadcast over Swarnavahini at the appointed time as it usually did. Instead another programme went over the air with a bottom strip being displayed as 'As an inquiry is underway in relation to Top Ten Super Hits programme, it would not be relayed today'. In the process Rahal Alwis the announcer who was the centre of attention in relation to this sensation had told a newspaper that he would be quitting that programme. Susanthika who says that she will sell the Olympic medal to ease her mental discomfort!

Susanthika Jayasingha who was successful in bringing honour to Sri Lanka by winning the 200 metres Olympic Silver medal has told last week's Sunday Lankadeepa newspaper that a crisis has occured in her life where she has to eke out her living by selling that medal at an auction. Before making that statement she has revealed at the discussion a list of things which she was not able to acquire and it is evident that her motive is to hurt
those who were involved in making her forego those things by saying that she wishes to forward the medal at the auction.

Susanthika has been bestowed a salary and a vehicle by the former regime and all that has been removed by the present government. Later she was granted a sum of 60,000 by the incumbent regime which however was stopped half-way after a time. Though Minister of Sports provided Susanthika with a position in recent times, she has not been provided a specific place for her to sit down and attend to her duties at the Ministry which incidentally is yet another distress of hers. She has also pointed out that not being in possession of a diplomatic passport either is yet another issue of hers. After explaining such matters, she has responded to questions posed to her, in the following manner:

"Though this Sports Minister has forgotten, I am a person who was involved in sports on behalf of the country for 20 years. Therefore I tell him once again ... he's an intelligent Minister ... he's proficient in many ways. If he thinks by using his intelligence, he'll understand accurately what I have said.

* How do you now live without that sixty thousand?
When commenting on income ... actually there was finances that I had earned. Much of that money was spent for political purposes. At that point nobody helped me in a special way as such. So what I earned also was spent on an equal level. At a time when I am helpless like this I spoke to Secretary of Defence across President's Counsel Mr. Jayantha Dolawatta. Subsequently I was recruited on a contract basis as a short-distance coach of the Army.

* What do you hope to do?
If sports authorities treat me on a low-grade level upto this extent, my only wealth is the Olympic Medal. I'll put it on auction.

* Put the Olympic Medal on auction?
Yes ... what else am I to do?

* Did you inform the Sports Ministry about this?
What to tell? I once spoke with those authorities. What they say is that they are in the process of contemplating establishing a sports museum. What I ask is whether it is the Sports Minister's medals that are going to be deposited there. I have the biggest medal in this country. Before it is given to the museum ... I'll sell it at the auction ... because before anything else I want to live with my two children.

* After putting the Olympic Medal for the auction ..?
I'll go to Australia. A country like that will welcome me. I have nothing more left for me to do.

(Newspaper discussion: Prasanna Sanjeewa Tennakoon - Lankdeepa)

This is how Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera responded to what Susanthika said: see video below

"The bag I gave didn't have any label; the packet of bananas was a case of mud-slinging" -- Gayantha to the CID

Minister Gayantha took action in lodging a complaint with Criminal Investigation Department yesterday requesting for an investigation for having circulated across social media the picture of a polythene packet with four bananas inside it and a photo of Minister Gayantha Karunatilleka with a propaganda slogan about flood relief attached to it; thus bringing him disrepute.

Minister Gayantha Karunatilleka who demands an inquiry into this photo with 4 bananas published in
the Facebook network said that this is an action launched by somebody for the sake of subjecting him to political disrepute. He said that he was present at the programme of distributing relief supplies to flood victims yesterday at Neluwa and Thawalama areas and that the aid distributed included a bag of supplies which amounted to a value of over Rs. 1500 and that no label was attached to it. He added that intelligent folk in Galle cannot be duped to secure their votes by flaunting 4 bananas. After the complaint lodged today by the Minister, police inquiries would commence in this respect.

Consulate A.S.P. in confusion because of Qatar chaos -- changing Riyals once again at Katunayaka

Several Arab states have taken a decision to boycott connections with Qatar yesterday and as a result close upon twenty-five lakhs of Sri Lankans living in Qatar have been thrown into a quandary. It is property and land businessman Mr. A.S.P. Liyanage who became popular because of Peacock Mansion who operates as the Sri Lankan Consulate in Qatar. From yesterday he was found
engrossed in responding to telephone calls streaming in from all corners from yesterday trying to provide accurate information to callers about the situation at hand.

Foreign reports have indicated that signs of a food shortage has dawned in Qatar and since it was a country which depended on foreign food produce, there are warning alerts that there would soon be a food shortage in super markets. It is understood that because some members of the public were removing articles of food in bulk to their homes, certain customers have been inconvenienced.

Difficulty in changing Qatar Riyals in Sri Lanka was noted for a period of some hours as reported from Katunayaka Airport; however the situation has later changed. The airport has informed that under Riyals 1000 in Qatar currency is being transacted at present. Sri Lankan Consulate Mr. A.S.P. Liyanage has advised Sri Lankans staying in Qatar to carry dollars when going to Sri Lanka.

Peradeniya campus girl who let her heartaches float along rail-tracks!

An unfortunate incident was reported where a 25 year old young girl who functioned as a trained Lecturer at the Science Faculty of Peradeniya University had committed suicide last morning, Saturday the 3rd by jumping in front of a moving train.

She had jumped in front of Podi Menike train plying from Colombo to Badulla around 9.30 last morning. Having jumped in front of the train her head was detached from her body and even parts of her arms were severed in the process, thus ultimately
embracing death. By now her death is suspected as a case of suicide; but the reason for suicide has not been made public. However, several rumours have circulated to the effect that she had taken her life over a decision taken on the spur of the moment.

The deceased is a resident of Pannipitiya and having completed her Science Degree from the University of Peradeniya had then been operating as a trained Lecturer (Demonstrator) at the same Faculty and the award ceremony of her batch had been conducted last week. She was able to meet her group of friends after a period of time having completed her educational activities.

The deceased who was familiarly known at the university by the pseudonym 'Gomari' was a character who had won the hearts of everybody. Rumours have gone around that on the day of the award ceremony she had come across a bosom friend of hers after sometime and that he had changed which had made her become disappointed. Only her closest of friends are aware of her romantic affairs and the true reason for her demise would come to light at the inquiries to be conducted in the near future. Gem-vein discovered in Tissamaharama amidst floods -- forgets disaster problems and aid provided and a large flock of people rushes in search of gems

After precipitation of soil recently because of floods, a vein of mineral ore (illama) or gem-vein had come to the surface close to Tissamaharama Sandungama Menik Palama, it is reported.

It was a group of people who were engaged in digging pits to construct a new culvert at that place who had first spotted some pieces of gems among the soil and having noticed it had instantly abandoned the task of making the culvert and started to pick the gems and sift them. This land
happens to belong to the State and it was understood that the ownership of the paddy field close by belongs to the Grama Niladhari in charge of the area.

When news about the gem-vein spread around, all work related to flood-victim relief had been thrown aside and villagers in surrounding areas and lands had visited the place in search of gems and to have a look at the land concerned while certain powerful people in the vicinity had come and collected large chunks of earth and loaded those into their vehicles and beat a retreat after that, it was reported. It is also learned that as a result of this fantastic phenomenon which occured on 28th the task of building the culvert was abandoned temporarily and steps had been taken to provide security to the area.

This gem-vein had surfaced near 'Menik Paalama' on arriving at Sandungama along Beralihela route of Tissamaharama and it is supposed that according to an ancient story the main reason which contributed for that bridge to be called 'Menik Paalama' was because there had been gems at that location. However, until floods raised its head there were no historical factors that indicated in recent times that there were gems there. Villagers have mentioned that this was the first occasion that a gem-vein was seen in this village.

Incident of crazy Sri Lankan passenger on flight becomes leading international news story -- remanded till August 24th

The baloney created by a Sri Lankan passenger on board flight MH 128 which was flying from Australia to Malaysia last night has become the leading news item in all leading media network around the world by now and as a result it has tarnished the image of Sri Lanka as well as a majority of the Sri Lankan community living in
Australia.

As reported, the person responsible for this act is a Sri Lankan by the name of Manod M. Marcs who lives in Dandenong in Australia on a student visa. The police has revealed that he was of the age of 25 years. Though it was initially assumed that he had acted this way under liquor the police have been able to confirm that he actually is suffering from a mental derangement. It was only the day before the said incident that he had taken treatment for the last time from Monash Medical Centre. He had purchased flight tickets to arrive in Colombo via Malaysia from Australia.

According to a survey conducted by Herald Sun newspaper it says that his Facebook Account says that his birthplace is Colombo and that he shares Buddhist ideas. It has been mentioned there that he is identified as a fan of Rap singer Tupac Shakur. According to reports released this afternoon (1) he has been produced before Victoria's Magistrate Court and remanded till 4th August. Attorneys-at-Law who appeared on his behalf have not requested for bail on his behalf and had forwarded only a report about his mental condition.

After about 30 minutes the flight had taken off he had shown an equipment with a battery inserted in it to the passengers and had shouted out saying "I've got a bomb and I'm going to f***ing blow the plane up!" and thus scared the passengers and had also threatened saying that he wants to go inside the cockpit. At that moment the staff on board had brought him under control in which instance he had collapsed on the floor. After the flight was diverted the security unit managed to take him into their custody without any difficulty. It was revealed that the bomb-scare was simply his psychosis. Reports have been released that under the Australian Federal Law he could be jailed for 10 years under charges of inconveniencing passengers, indeterminate scare and influencing cancellation of the flight.

An Australian football star and his fiancee had been on board this flight and since their evidence too was published with the news release, this incident became even more publicised. The incident concerned hit the headlines in all leading media around the world this morning, June 1st and most of them had interpreted the incident as 'A psychotic act by a Sri Lankan'.

Tsunami scare in South yesterday because sea water had flowed over to Galle Road

As a result of a Tsunami scare with sea water flooding on to the road, public at various locations in the Southern Province had scampered from their homes yesterday (5).

This undetermined fear has circulated because sea water has been flowing on to Galle Road these days from various spots in Galle Road from Kahawa to Galle and upto Hikkaduwa Thotagamuwa
Bridge. Further, because of the flood-water situation in Kalutara, the mouth of the river was widened, the sea water has therefore reached a greater distance more than at other times and as a consequence a risky situation has been created around the vicinity of the railway station, it is learned. Deputy Director of Disaster Management Centre, Mr. Pradeep Kodippily made a plea from the public who left their homes in this manner and scampered to safety locations because of rumours spreading about Tsunami which incidentally was devoid of any scientific foundation, not to be misled by false propaganda and hearsay.

This situation it was explained is something which happens because of the off season. Sea water was observed as streaming into the land area in areas such as Kahawa, Godagama, Thelwatta, Peraliya and Thotagamuwa. Video report of that incident, from below

What will happen to Sri Lankans because Arab countries are isolating Qatar?

What will happen to Sri Lankans because Arab countries are isolating Qatar?

It was agreed yesterday by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Yemen and the Maldives to cut off ties with the State of Qatar for providing support to terrorists, thus severing diplomatic connections with her. Under these circumstances problems may crop up by way of food, communication and international airspace for the Sri Lankans numbering upto almost 125,000 living in Qatar, it is reported.
Steps had been taken to refuse changing Qatar Riyals into Rupees at bank branches at Katunayaka Airport from yesterday.

The change which spurred this situation, it is reported were discussions carried out by American President Trump with leaders of Saudi and Egypt. According to Trump's conditions, by isolating Arab countries who maintain connections with terrorists, other countries facing problems in the future would be minimised. According to announcements yesterday all Emirate, Ethas, Fly Dubai and Air Arabia flights operating uptu Qatar will be halted from today (6). As a result of this situation a severe unrest keeps developing within the Gulf Zone. Reuter News has reported that a period of 2 weeks has been given to Qatar nationals and those who have come on tour from Qatar, to exit. Whatever it is, Minister of Foreign Employment, Thalatha Athukorala has responded to an inquiry made by BBC Sinhala Service that because of the above decision no influence will be created on Sri Lankans living there or on diplomatic relations of Sri Lanka.

As approximately 40% of food items used for consumption in Qatar are being transported by lorries from Saudi, the stability of food in Qatar would be affected instantly as a consequence of this suspension of relationships, it is learned. The Doha Qatar News newspaper has reported that the public are streaming into markets to store food items and water, under this crisis situation.

Though these issues were in motion with Qatar affecting other Arab countries, State of Qatar did not deal in those matters with a flexible policy. Though neighbouring countries tried to change Qatar in this respect, it turned out to be futile, it was reported. The Foreign Ministry of Qatar thoroughly rejected allegations targetted at her. The State of Qatar has informed that she would be taking all steps to prevent her masses from facing any impact in this connection.

The Korean actress Lee Yung who played the role of Changumi in 'Sujatha Diyaniya', a Korean tele-drama which was broadcast and was the topic of immense discussion in the past in Sri Lanka had thought of sending aid to the public here because of the anguish that had developed within her after watching the television about people who were victimised by the floods in Sri Lanka.

As such, she had directed a sum of American $ 50,000 (Rs. 77 lakhs) to Mrs. Sasanga Nikapitiya of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Korea. The President of the Korean Society for the Disabled, Lee Siong handed over that money yesterday on behalf of her.

SLIT student who tried to whisk away a gem worth 100 lakhs hidden in his bag, to a foreign country ... nabbed

A 23 year old youth who was in the process of taking a gem of the Ruby category illegally from the country was nabbed at Katunayaka Airport yesterday. The suspect supposed to be a student of Malabe SLIT Institute was trapped by the eagle-eyed Customs officers because he happened to be walking here and there looking around.

This student was scheduled to fly to Abu Dhabi on flight number EY 267 and when a Customs
Officer had mentioned that it was necessary to inspect his bag, it was possible to detect this gem hidden in a secret pocket fixed inside his bag.

It has been informed that he is a resident of Colombo and that he is following a course of studies on International Technology at Malabe SLIT Campus. He has travelled to Abu Dhabi on a number of previous occasions and investigations are underway to find out whether he has smuggled valuable items of this nature on those occasions too. The Customs inform that the gem concerned was confiscated and the suspect was ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 1 lakh.
