Mysterious death of Moragahahena teacher

An incident of a retired lady teacher who had been sleeping in her house had been found dead near a toilet close to her house last morning in Moragahahena, Halapitiya, it was reported.

The teacher's husband who had been sleeping on the same bed her had got up around 5 in the morning and on noticing that she was not on bed
had woken up the children and had made a search for her when it was found that the teacher was lying at a spot close to the house, frothing from the mouth with face upwards ... in their own land near a toilet close to another house belonging to them, with both arms tied. Both her arms were held high up and tied with rags. It appeared that she had been made to drink some poison and white-coloured phlegm was observed dripping from the mouth. A bottle containing a red-coloured liquid, some rags and a torch were discovered close to her body. Occupants of her house have however said that those articles or items were not in the house. The victim was in such a serious condition that she even was not in a state of speaking. Later, though she was admitted to Horana Base Hospital she  passed away.

The deceased incidentally was 58 years old and Kondarage Mangalika by name; a retired primary school teacher. She was attached to Sri Swarnajothi Vidyalaya and had retired after a long service. Early morning her husband had woken up and having noticed that his wife was not on bed had thought that she had begun her domestic activities as usual since she was accustomed to getting up daily at 4.10 in the morning. But on looking around he had noticed that the door of the kitchen was open. Sine she was not to be seen around the place he had got perturbed. He had then woken up his son and daughter and had begun a search for his wife. It was then that he found her lying on the ground with her arms tied up near a toilet adjoining the land of their house. The police have  observed that some outsider had planned and murdered her. Further investigations about the incident are underway.

Mother of son of Minister's Secretary and also of millionaire garment businessman left stranded on the road on Poya Day

Mother of son of Minister's Secretary and also of millionaire garment businessman left stranded on the road on Poya Day

A tragic incident was reported last Sunday Full Moon Poya Day where the eldest son supposed to be the Secretary of a Deputy Minister has left his mother stranded by the roadside. She had subsequently come to Kottawa Police Station in a three-wheeler and poured out the story to the police. She had also brought along with
her some bags with clothing in them.

On the day of the incident she had been accompanied by her eldest son to her second son's house; but her daughter-in-law who was not on good terms with her has refused to welcome her arrival and had closed the gate on her and in the process, the eldest son instead of taking her to some other place had dropped her near the gate and had told her to go inside at a time the gate is opened. Saying so he had left her there. She further says that neither her second son nor the daughter-in-law had taken any interest in her about taking her inside the house and she was thus left helpless on the road and decidedto come to the police.

This lady who was the mother of 3 children revealed her story in this manner: "I have 3 sons. The youngest son in the Army died while in service. The eldest son is the Secretary to a Minister and the second son is a millionaire garment businessman. Even from those days I was living in a house bought by me for a sum of Rs. 43000 and now it's of a value of about 2 crores. It was in 1981 that my husband died. Later my second son stayed there with the daughter-in-law. But recently my second son had broken up my almirah and having taken the deed out, went on to get it written in his name by force and later chased me away. After that I was at my eldest son's place for a short period. His family life was in confusion and he's with another. He had said that he's not in a position to look after me. After that the second son came and put me into an elders' home in Pitipana area saying that I have a mental upset. Later the eldest son came and said that the expenses there is high and subsequently left me in a rented house. Finally I was brought to the second son's house on the understanding that the expenses there too was high.

My daughter-in-law doesn't like me and keeps humiliating me saying 'Regina mamai ape raajje' and doesn't care for me. When my youngest son died I got Rs. 20 lakhs a month. All of them used to beat me and punish me and the daughter-in-law and sons took it away from me. Very recently my hand was twisted and money was taken from me after beating me up saying I didn't give money. 2 lakhs has been taken from me saying that Rs. 40000 has to be paid for the vehicle. My identity card and compensation documents of my deceased son was burned. It was when I was staying in a rented out room in Makola that the eldest son approached me on the evening of the 12th and put me into a vehicle saying that I am to be taken to another place and thus took me near my second son's home in Moraketiya. As soon as the daughter-in-law came to know that I came, the gate was locked and the lights were switched off. After that my eldest son said that 'they are eating and drinking with your money ... at sometime or other they'll take you inside the house'. So saying he dropped me on the roadside. But they never took me inside. Even people around came and asked so many things. I could not do anything ... so I came to the police in a three-wheeler. I am so embarassed. Why do children treat their mother like this? Today is Poya Day ... this is how I was treated".

After she was not allowed to enter the house which belonged to her and was stranded on the road like this, she had gone to the police and related the whole story of what happened to her. After Kottawa Police summoned her 2 sons for the purpose of solving the matter, they had come to the police station yesterday (13) and had accepted guilt to the offence. Later they had said that they would undertake responsibility for her to be sent to a home for the aged and had thus escorted her away.

Arrest those who killed Thajudeen ... without tormenting me only -- a sensitive statement from Anura Senanayaka

Former Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police, Anura Senanayaka presently under remand for the last 10 months in connection with Wasim Thajudeen murder made an emotional remark in courts yesterday (16): "Arrest the murderers without tormenting me!"

This is what he told in the presence of Colombo Additional Magistrate, Mr. Jeyaram Trotsky: "My Lord ... it is exactly two years already for the investigation of this complaint. When investigations were 1 year and 3 months, I was taken into custody. About 50 complaints have been lodged in the 'B' Report in respect of the allegation. There's no evidence in any of those ... suitable enough to arrest me as such. I was taken into custody to cover up evidence. This court can provide bail for a statement given by some witness for the accusation of withholding evidence. But the purpose of detaining me under custody on a continuous basis was changed saying that it was a conspiracy for murder. Now I am being remanded for 10 months. Murderers of Mr. Thajudeen must be apprehended somehow or other. Don't avoid that.

My Lord ... before I assumed position of Director of the Criminal Department of Colombo ... there was nobody to take over that post. It was a time when LTTE attacks were targeted at Colombo too. The whole country knows what a fight I launched to make terrorists come down on their feet by being the Director of Colombo Criminal Department. I brought up this point not to request for freedom. I am already suffering mentally and physically for having been kept under remand custody for no purpose. My younger brother who was in the Army died while in service during an attack by LTTE terrorists. My mother is a Ranaviru Mathawa.

My Lord ... I plead not to look at me with the eyes of a criminal. The whole country says that I am responsible for this murder and are awaiting the outcome. Murderers of Mr. Thajudeen should be apprehended immediately. I must question why it hasn't happened even after 2 years. I plead My Lord to provide me some consolation".

eZcash business of Samayan inside prison revealed at autopsy!

Autopsy of underground kingpin and the other four who were gunned down in Kalutara sometime ago when being escorted in prison bus was conducted last afternoon at Kalutara Courts by the magistrate with the participation of the wives and close kith and kin of the deceased.

On the occasion the wives remarked that all of them were contacting them from prison on their mobile phones frequently. When the Lady Magistrate questioned that it was
a queer matter as to how they managed to contact them, some of them had responded saying that the deceased had aid that they were speaking from the jailor's mobile phone. Whatever it is, it was learned that they had been speaking from various phones. It was revealed from testimonies of those present at the autopsy that the deceased prisoners have been using reloads (for the mobile phones) and cash across eZcash system for the prison officers.

The wives also stated that before their husbands came to Kalutara Prison, they had been detained at Welikada Prison and were constantly alert about the safety of their lives and were transferred to Kalutara Prison because of such security measures. The wives also admitted that information about the said mobile phone dealings within the prison, had been leakng out about their movements to and fro and that the group were thus linked to various unnecessary murders too. It was expressed that if not for such incidents, these murders would have been averted. They also pointed out that if the police took action to provide proper security, these deaths would not have taken place.

At the moment when underground chief Samayan died, he has had a gold ring and silver rings in his possession and it was mentioned in courts that his first wife K.P. Sugandi Caldera has made a complaint to Kalutara North Police demanding for those items. It was an issue as to how Samayan defied the law in such a case where a prisoner or detenue is prohibited from wearing any ornaments etcetera after being subjected to prison. Whatever it is, since it was revealed that it was true that he really did wear those rings, the magistrate ordered that those items be handed over to Samayan's first wife Sugandi.

As several reports of telecommunication offices were necessary for inquiries into some telephones for the purpose of carrying on further investigations into the case at hand, the telephone companies concerned were instructed yesterday to provide the relevant data. Magistrate Mrs. Bharathi Wijeyratna also ordered the prison buses which sustained damage from gunfire be handed over to the prison. Further hearing has been fixed until 24th March and evidence of prison officers are to be secured on that day.

Moment when Speaker gave permission to Piyatilleka who created the 'Senkolaya'

Moment when Speaker gave permission to Piyatilleka who created the 'Senkolaya'

Most people have heard about the 'Senkolaya' (ceremonial mace) of the parliament of Sri Lanka. The proceedings of the House in parliament commences in an honourable fashion when the Senkolaya is localised.

There are occasions on record where some parliamentarians have carried the mace around for purposes of disturbing the House. The
present Senkolaya which symbolises the dignity of the parliament is something which has been gifted by the British Government. Prior to this it was a Senkolaya created by a local artiste which was in use until 1972. The said Senkolaya which is known as the Senate Senkolaya is currently in safe custody as an item of archaeological value. Nobody has the permission to tamper with it. This Senkolaya was created by Asveda Naidelage Piyatilleka who resided in Rambukkana Dombemada and who incidentally had the reputation as a distinguished goldsmith. He is now 88 years of age. Since he was not able to even touch the very Senkolaya of which he himself was the architect, he had been for sometime been lamenting about it for quite a period of time as such. When Speaker Mr. Karu Jayasuriya heard this news he had been on the horns of a dilemma whether the architect's dream should be fulfilled. And the creator of the Senkolaya finally happened to get the chance of touching this precious item once again a few days ago.

He said that he created this in the year 1956 according to a structure he was given. Thus it is embedded with 45 gold pounds of 20 carat and sculptured with 3 and a half pounds of silver also embedded with a red hue, turquoise with 9 jewels within an elephant tusk 52 inches in length. Mr. Piyatilleke was bestowed this wonderful opportunity during the instance where the Sri Lankan parliamentary tradition has now drawn close to have completed 7 decades by being offered a special dinner and an offering of generosity as well. On this occasion Mr. Piyatilleka was present with a number of his progeny to grace the event. He was not afforded the opportunity of even getting close to this absolutely distinguished symbol for so long a period and at this personally historic moment he had the fortune of touching his own creation with his own hands and in the company of his progeny again.

The top part of the Senkolaya in fact consists of a crown in the shape of a flower comprising 8 petals with a beryl-coloured gem of a pointed shape which gives the appearance of a globular, filled up pot. The Moonstone of Anuradhapura is embedded in the frill formation located round the globular structure. Beneath that is found gems of a red and blue hue embedded there while Navaratna gems are attached to the bottom circular portion to characterise the 9 planets of the solar system. Mr. Piyatilleka says that the Senkolaya could be dismantled into 45 parts and it is affixed with a secret nail and that only he who knows about that particular nail. The total weight of the Senkolaya is 4 and a half pounds and he further mentions that the Pali text 'Sathindriyocha nipakocha' is to be seen on the logo of the then Senate, around the shaft. The only Senate Senkolaya produced by a Sri Lankan architect who could set his eyes upon his own creation was exceedingly joyful for this creator for having seen it once more.

It's true that there are problems ... but I still love Umali -- Saranga voices his ideas for first time

It's true that there are problems ... but I still love Umali -- Saranga voices his ideas for first time

Rumours went round some days ago that the marriage of tele-actor Saranga Disasekera has gone on the rocks but he kept his mouth shut in the presence of the media. However he has voiced his opinion for the first time on behalf of a newspaper.

This is how he responded to questions posed to
him in Australia:
* Saranga ... what are you upto these days in Melbourne?
There was a concert called 'Teletharu reyak' in Melbourne. It's a concert where male and female artistes participated there displaying their skills and extending their cordiality among the fans. I also attended the concert.

* These days rumours and news are circulating about your wife Umali across various media. What have you got to say about it?
I am not prepared to make comments on it right now ... because the proper time will come in the future; I'll talk then.

* There is a talk going round that everything is ready for you and Umali to separate. But the whole country has identified both of you as a family who are spending a graceful marriage. What are the external influences behind this?
Without identifying correctly what those influences are, it's not fair in blaming anyone. It'll be possible to reveal everything to my fans and the media once the proper time comes. This is not the correct time for me.

* Do you love your wife Umali still?
Yes ... I love her still.

* Does Umali too love you as before?
   Umali too loves me.

* Nobody can shatter yours and Umali's life ... isn't it?
Nobody can do so. But domestic problems can crop up in anybody's family life. Those are matters which should be negotiated with the couple having a discussion with the elders. I and Umali are a normal family just as much as others. We aren't abnormal people. I am of the standpoint that when some problem emerges in the family they should involve each other's elders and solve the problem.

Bangla Desh trounces Sri Lanka for first time in a Test match

Bangla Desh team was able to be victorious for the first time in the Test match played against Sri Lanka today. This being their 100th Test match no doubt it created a memorable landmark for them.

Bangla Desh players who pursued 191 runs for victory today passed the winning mark with 4 wickets
in hand and it was a special note of interest to record that the Chief Coach of the Bangla Desh team happened to be Chandika Hathurusingha with the batting coach being Tilan Samaraweera. Bangla Desh had to wait for 16 long years to taste a Test win against Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan team who opened batting in the game were all out for 338 and Bangla Desh who replied to it were all out for 467 runs. Sri Lanka then were bowled out for a total of 319 in their second innings. Bangla Desh who took charge of the pitch to arrive at the target of 191 found their first two wickets falling for a meagre score of just 22 runs. In the end Thamin Iqbal collected 82 runs, Saumya Sakar 10 runs with Shabeer Rahman scoring 41 runs. As Sri Lanka won the Test in Galle, the Test series of 2 matches were squared between the 2 countries.

A pleasant change for Yasara who stood undaunted in the face of challenges

The story of the romance between former CSN Chief Yasara Abeynaika and former President's son Yoshitha was a piece of news which created an uproar during the past across the internet with birthmark stories of Wasim Thajudeen being attached to it in the background.

She has however taken steps to put a full stop to all those
stories explaining that she even does not know Wasim Thajudeen. During the period of all this hulabaloo of court cases she entered into wedlock with a long-time rugger player and friend Fazeel Mirja. Over stories that circulated those days with regard to racial discrimination regarding her marriage she went on to respond to them in a rather harsh tone. Yasara who stood undaunted amidst all these various challenges has now opened up a new chapter in her life. She has of late been successful in begetting a baby.

Displayed below is an instagram photo which gives a clue and taken in the company of Mirja with reference to her conception. He had on that occasion made a joke of his six-pack and her one-pack. Our good wishes for Yasara's new life!

Sri Lanka's super player Thillakaratna Dilshan contributed his mite to a helpless family in Matale by constructing a house for the family.

It was in the year 2016 that Nirmala Padmakumari Menike of Agalawatta, Matale lost her husband. He had died after being

This mother who thus lived alone with her 2 daughters was rendered helpless under these circumstances and she had mortgaged her temporary dwelling and property; thereby acquiring 5 and a half lakhs and taken steps to see to the education of her 11 year old and 7 year old daughters keeping in mind that the girls did not miss what they needed.

Whatever it is, she could not settle the mortgage as anticipated by her and days were closing up upon her where settlement of the mortgage was nigh. This dilemma was focused upon by the media after which a philanthropist from Matara came forward to her rescue.

During that period, cricketer Dilshan who heard about this predicament of this family having understood her plight occured to him that in order to live in a house with adequate facilities a new house was deemed necessary and he made a pledge volunteering to come to their aid by supporting them with 25 lakhs. Yesterday, Sunday 16th Nirmala and her 2 daughters came into occupation at this new house at the auspicious hour. Dilshan together with his wife and children too attended the occasion. Two among the three victims were a 47 year old mother from Egoda Uyana and her 13 year old daughter.

the mother who died. After buying these amenities she had been on her way home with her daughter while engaged in the process of collecting items necessary for an almsgiving ceremony. The almsgiving in fact happened to be on behalf of her own mother and it was on March 20th 2016, exactly an year ago when her mother had passed away.

The surprising fact in this case is that her mother had died an year before on the pedestrian crossing close to the bus-halt where Deepthi and her daughter met with their death. Deepthi's mother died from a bus accident similar to this tragic and unexpected bus - lorry collision. It is a stroke of fate that Deepthi too happened to walk along the same route at the same spot with her daughter on their way to the same realm that Deepthi's mother never dreamt of before her death, one year later.

Deceased Deepthi's daughter Thelge Nethmi Diluksha Peris was an 8 Year student of Wekada Bauddhaloka Vidyalaya in Panadura. Deepthi's husband was a three-wheel driver and on this particular day he had been awaiting his wife and daughter at the bus-halt near their house with the idea of preparing the rest of the almsgiving requirements by collecting the said sack of coconuts. They had in fact planned to perform the almsgiving ceremony for a children's home.

A private bus which was heading towards Colombo from Aluthgama at a hectic speed had collided with a lorry which incidentally was moving ahead of this bus at which instance the lorry had got pushed about 50 feet forward after the collision striking the bus-halt which was by the side of the road, causing this tragic accident. The mother and daughter had sustained serious injuries from this tragedy while a certain 68 year old mason too faced injuries in the process. All 3 victims passed away in hospital.

The police said that after the bus struck the lorry if the driver of the lorry had taken action to apply brakes and bring the vehicle to a halt or had swerved it to a side, the accident could have been averted. The villagers who were in a frenzy after the accident had gathered at Moratuwa Police Station in an agitated mood and police personnel from Moratumulla and Angulana Police Stations had to be summoned to bring the situation under control. The whole of Egoda Uyana area has gone into a shock as a result of these two deaths of the mother and daughter.

What guide did by leaving foreigners stranded by roadside is right?

A certain incident where a group of English-speaking tourists who were on a tour in Sri Lanka had been left stranded on the road by a Sri lankan guide cum chauffeur who took them around on a Safari jeep. It was because of a dispute over a money transaction which incident is being circulated across the internet these days
in video form.

On the said occasion an argument mixed with anger was observed between the two parties and the Sri Lankan in this instance is seen arguing about injustice done to him because only 3500 has been offered to him after having agreed for a sum of 4500. This Sri Lankan who reprimands against videoing the incident in indecent words asks them in anger to get off the vehicle and thus after dropping them from the vehicle then speeds off in the vehicle. It has been found that the tourists concerned in this case were 2 males and 1 female.

The video in relation to this incident has been released to the internet over YouTube by a foreigner. It was reported that several incidents of behaviour of tour guides similar to what is displayed in this video have been released across the YouTube by this very foreigner. As such, what is seen at first glance is that reporting incidents of this nature across the internet has been made a habit by this person. As a complete description cannot be assessed by the video, it is difficult to understand as to who is guilty in this instance.

The said Sri Lankan according to knowledgeable sources is supposed to be a resident of Polonnaruwa and is said to be an innocent character and he has later remarked that he had been treated unfairly by these tourists and therefore he was compelled to behave in that manner. Whatever it is, when this video was going its rounds in social media there were many voices aired criticising the way the Sri Lankan behaved and it further criticised that incidents of this type where Sri Lankans behaved disrespectfully in the presence of outsiders being publicised would result in a drop in the tourist influx to Sri Lanka in future. Mahanama Big Match students who barge into Yasodara Balika ... stuck inside and big hulabaloo results!

Parallel to the Colombo Mahanama Vidyalaya Annual cricket match, during the journey of a motorcade which housed close upon 60 students and Old Boys of the school while proceeding on their journey had in the process bulldozed themselves into Yasodara Balika Vidyalaya in Punchi Borella and had created a big confusion
there yesterday.

These youngsters who were alleged to have been drunk had on setting eyes on the girls outside the classrooms before the lunch interval period had scaled the walls of the school and subsequently gained entrance to the school premises and had given chase to the schoolgirls attempting to fondle them. At that moment 50 or 60 schoolboys had gained entry to the school premises with clubs in their hands and the security guard had been unable to handle this crowd. Teachers, both male and female on seeing this confusion that was taking place had come out and instructed the schoolgirls to dart inside and had subsequently gone behind this riotous crowd. On that occasion the Mahanama crowd of students had made a dash out of the school for fear of being apprehended and taken to their heels.

However 2 of them were cornered inside the school and the situation thus aggravated. One of them was kept inside the guard-room under the custody of the security guard while the other schoolboy was forced into a spot somewhere in the yard of the school. As the gates were locked up their colleagues could not rescue the two of them. Whatever it is, those who were outside were of the belief that they had missed only the colleague who was cornered in the school garden. It was at that point that a large crowd of his friends had created a big uproar demanding for the release of their friend.

The schoolboys of Mahanama had thus damaged property of Yasodara Balika, comporting themselves in the most disgusting manner. Though the security officer had taken action to summon the police over 119, this student battalion had shouted out saying that they were not prepared to leave the environment until their schoolmate was handed over to them. At that point one police officer had promptly opened the gate of the school. The schoolboys who grasped this opportunity had once again barged into the schoolyard and had even resorted to assaulting the male teachers -- thus after rescuing their comrade has had the audacity to let out hoots, finally leaving the school premises. Whatever it is, their forgotten comrade who was cornered inside the guard-room was later handed over to the police by school authorities. He is expected to be produced before courts.
