Retired Major General accepts guilt and makes up

The incident where retired Major General Kamal Guneratna had approached a student of Colombo D.S. Senanayaka College at a time when the student had been relaxing after finishing the examination and had also threatened him was brought to an amicable settlement by both parties confronting each other at the police station.

Last 14th the said student had finished his examination and had come out of the exam hall when the retired Major General appearing on behalf of a related son of his had come upon the student
concerned and had thrown his influence around after which the boy had lodged a complaint to this effect on the 17th to Cinnamon Gardens Police once his examination was over. As the incident was circulated among the media before that, what the retired Major General told the media was that it was a false story and that he had not even assaulted anyone even during his service with the Army and that this story was a woven-up story which was done at a time when he had been overseas.

Whatever it is, a testimony was called for by summoning the retired Major General in respect of the complaint and both he and the complainant party were asked to appear at the police last 21st. Accordingly, in the presence of the student who was there accompanied by the mother the retired Major General had admitted that he had been present on that day at the school. (He had in fact been overseas and returned to Sri Lanka on the 12th. The referred to incident had actually taken place on the 14th). He further revealed that he so arrived at the request of his sister. Whatever it is, the retired Major General has asked not to entertain grievous feelings about his action and had patched up with the student. Finally, steps were taken to withdraw the complaint so that the issue would not go any further.

Rumours that X'mas Tree built in Sri Lanka is not the world's biggest ... proved false!

Rumours that X'mas Tree built in Sri Lanka is not the world's biggest ... proved false!

The Christmas tree which was created at Galle Face Green, Colombo by Arjuna Ranatunga social welfare league was opened yesterday and a debate has cropped up whether it really is the world's tallest Christmas Tree. So far no approval has been received by Guinness Records; but it has been included in the waiting list.

Though the constructors at the commencement said that it would be erected at a height of 325 feet, the height at its completion was 238 feet. As such they had to forego 87 feet. The reason for this
difference was the temporary withdrawal of construction by the religious Head. After the difference of this height and on completion of the structure Minister Arjuna has issued an announcement to the media saying that this effort would go on to establish the Guinness Record as the 'World's biggest Artificial Christmas Tree'.

According to Guinness Records Website information the following records have been listed in various ways about Christmas Trees already established:

The world's biggest Christmas Tree structure -- 419.91 feet in height / decoration bulbs 28344 (a creation of Energisa Serjip of Serjip, Brazil 2009).

The world's biggest floating Christmas Tree -- 278 feet 10 inches in height / decoration bulbs 2.8 million / floating on a rope 37 kms. in length. (a creation of Bradesco Segrus of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2007).

The world's biggest artificial Christmas Tree -- 180.4 feet in height / 69 metres in circumference / 22 metres wide. (a creation of Think Big Clutcher, Gunzow, China 2015).

The world's tallest cut Christmas Tree -- 221 feet in height. (a creation of Douglas Fir, Washington, America 1950).

As such, the Christmas Tree which was opened yesterday in Sri Lanka would clinch the Guinness Record for having modernized the Christmas Tree coming under the classification of 'world's biggest artificial Christmas Tree' quoted as the third, going beyond it when considering the height of 238 feet and some other aspects. Though the initially targeted height became less as a result of obstructions during process of erection, the creators have been successful in moving beyond the already recorded height.

An organisation by the name of The Catholic Expression has released an announcement to the media without considering the multiplicity of the relevant records arguing that the Christmas Tree constructed in Sri Lanka is not the tallest by comparing it with only the category 'world's biggest artificial Christmas Tree'. Given below is the Guinness Records Page of classification for which Sri Lanka competed:

Underground kingpin Udammita Samare ... shot on the head and dies

As a result of a shooting incident which took place last night around 10.55 in Veyangoda town, 'Udammita Samare' a leader of an underworld gang died while another was seriously wounded.

The shooting was done when Udammita Samare together with his colleagues had been travelling in a luxury vehicle close to the bridge across Elle Oya on the road running towards Nittambuwa
from Veyangoda by a gang who had pursued them on motor cycles. Several bullet marks were detected on the glass near the driving seat of the said vehicle and Samare who was driving the car had fallen a victim to the barrage of fire and had succumbed to death on the spot while the other person who sustained injuries of a serious manner was admitted to Colombo National Hospital, it was reported. However, the other two who were travelling in the back seat had escaped without injury.

After facing gun-shots the car had struck the pavement on the middle of the bridge and had travelled about another 50 meters and then come to a halt after striking a post having swerved from the road. There is evidence to say that the assailants had come on motor cycles.

Deceased Udammita Samare is the chief suspect in the incident where the Chairman Suranga Peris of the Nittambuwa Trading Association was assassinated and his true name is Samaradivakara Rajapaksha Mohotti Appuhamilage Janaka Samantha Kumara Samaradivakara, it has been noted. He has created a sensation over the fact that he was a notorious character who was responsible for a host of underworld crimes in the area and it is the opinion of people in the area that he had transformed Attanagalla and Nittambuwa areas into a 'small Jaffna'. It is also understood that his slogan had been 'no wife ... and no children'. He is also notorious as someone who had close relationships with the politician Sarana Gunawardena too. Veyangoda Police undertook investigations over the incident.

Inquiry on death of Iresha Sandamali who died at Neville Fernando Hospital after surgery in abdomen went wrong

Inquiry on death of Iresha Sandamali who died at Neville Fernando Hospital after surgery in abdomen went wrong

The All Island Medical Officers Association and kith and kin of 35 year old newly-married lady the latter of whom passed away unanticipatedly after an operation at Malabe Neville Fernando Private Hospital have called for an inquiry in this connection. They have complained that the cause of death is the result of negligence of the doctors in the hospital.

The deceased, Iresha Sandamali Jeewandara a resident of Ahugammana, Delgoda had suffered from pains in the bottom of her abdomen after an year of her marriage and had been receiving treatment
initially at a private hospital in Ragama and since the doctor had travelled overseas they had sought treatment at Neville Fernando Private Hospital, Malabe. Having considered all records of the previously stated doctor, a scan examination had been done on her after which the doctors at the Malabe Private Hospital had said that some nodules were observed in the lady's womb region. They had then said that this could be removed by a minor surgery called 'pastine' and be easily treated and had motivated the deceased's husband to go in for the surgery. The lady who had no other ailment had promptly given her consent to the operation and even at the last moment she had been in a jovial mood, getting ready for the operation.

This is what her husband had to say: "What the doctors said was that this was a simple thing. She also was quite o.k. She was taken to the operating theatre on 22nd morning. After about 2 hours the nurses came and said that she was taken to the Intensive Care Unit. Later the doctor came and told that because her heart beat and blood pressure had begun to increase when the operation was half over, she was sent to the ICU. Whatever it is, by about 12.30 that night the doctor at the ICU said that her situation has turned for the better. But at 2 in the morning comes and says 'bad news ... we couldn't save her!' Oh god ... my wife was admitted for a pain in the stomach. What we were told was that only a minor surgery would be done. Ultimately what was given was the dead body".

Inquiry on death of Iresha Sandamali who died at Neville Fernando Hospital after surgery in abdomen went wrong
An Open Verdict has been given over the death at the post-mortem and the manner in which death has taken place is still under investigation. Final rites of the dead body is expected to be finalised today 26th.

The All Island Medical Officers Association charges that the Neville Fernando Hospital utilises the Teaching Hospital of the institute which provides Malabe SAITM private medical degrees and that this patient has died because of the negligence of doctors who were ill-equipped and also bring to memory the case of Kavisha Madhushan who died being afflicted with dengue in the year 2014. Chief Administrator of Neville Fernando Hospital Dr. Bimantha Gunasekera has tendered his apologies in this connection and says that he would bow down to the decision arrived at the report of inquiry to be released next week.
