External Degrees .... only from Open University

Professor Mohan de Silva, Chairman of the University Grants Commission mentioned at the media briefing held yesterday when speaking in relation to university cut off marks that there is a possibility that external degree classes held at various places in Sri Lanka might be abolished. He also revealed that to fill its gap, though equipped with marks warranting advanced level university entrance but deprived of entrance facilities would find solace as all powers to grant External Degrees has been bestowed on Open Universities for which arrangements are being made made these days. No Parking at Book Exhibition -- Motor Traffic .... Guerilla Marketing

The book exhibition being held at Bandaranaika Memorial Hall these days is being held with the participation of an unimagined crowd in attendance. Much of the crowd who are in attendance for the exhibition are seen spending their time there from
afternoon till night time and the crowd lessens only during morning hours. Those who come in vehicles are not provided parking space inside. Though as in previous years as was the customary procedure, they had tried to bring the vehicles inside. However from 9 in the morning the police have taken steps to turn them back but had not directed them towards alternate locations. As a result some were compelled to roam about and finally park their vehicles by the roadside. Those who were taken inside were those who were armed with passes.

Because of the parking issue at the exhibition all roads around from Bauddhaloka Mawatha had been closed and there had been a traffic congestion of an extraordinary nature. As a consequence those who hope to go to some location around Colombo would find a better option in avoiding those routes. On the other hand much of the crowd who are present at the exhibition are seen interested in seeing the books exhibited than buying the books. As on certain occasions and locations where pilgrims are observed, the environment in this instance too are not short of those selling food, bookmarks and sim cards.

Certain individuals from Guerilla Marketing were noticed to hand over pieces of cardboard and directing people to certain places saying: "Get your offer from there" and those who thus go over there is confronted by a representative who is well prepared to sell them a data package and he would launch his strategy saying: "Sir ... madam, this is the offer". When entering the book exhibition as a form of pass the person entering is expected to buy a bookmark for Rs. 20. (But there is however no place where such a purchase is checked). What could be cited as a significant factor for buyers of books at the exhibition is the offer extended at every bookshop is the 20 per cent discount given for them. If the book bought happens to be purchased directly from the publisher of the book himself; the discount could even be higher. Towards the rear is found a unit offering second hand books for sale and one has the opportunity of perusing the books and making his or her selection.

It is seen at first glance that the majority of publishers these days are bent on selling publications relevant to subjects of studies of school children. Publishers who show an interest in publishing books on literature are few and far in between. At certain shops, short notebooks being printed in an eye-catching manner is seen for sale. The second place where sales are concerned goes to cheap type of novels and translations. More than their contents, what catches the eye is the caption or the cover of the publication. Those publications adorned with an emotional woman depicted in the cover of the book and the caption which is portrayed with a sense mixed with sexuality actually sell like hot cakes!

When purchasing books, places where payment is made in cash notes are seen in the majority. There are of course places where payment could be made both in cash as well as cards. Recognised and bookshops which have carved a name for themselves of course have been allotted about 3 sales outlets. It is not only selling of books that takes place at the book exhibition. There are places where communication and dialogues are observed throughout the day, places for children to engage in drawing and ceremonies of launching something too. Apart from this, display-cubicles for various departments too are to be seen.

In addition to this, there is a competition operated by a radio channel which provides Selfies for the visitors as well as a competition which selects winners from a wheel of fortune from a stationery shop. Another channel operates as a middleman which assists by offering book donations for the helpless for the purpose of building a library. This channel is allotted for the purpose of buying books and to claim gifts for it. There are more than enough places for one to buy food and drinks during intervals while engaged in seeing the exhibition. Ranging from Rs. 50 upwards a drink is available with a variety of soft drinks, tea, instant food, noodles, sambol sandwiches and manioc.

The authority which conducts hotels inside as a matter of custom happens to be Mount Lavinia Hotel and their prices of food and drinks of course are of a higher capacity. A restaurant belonging to the BMICH is available separately. Of those who visit the exhibition, it is noted that about thirty percent are purchasing various books. Most categories of young people have made the book exhibition a place of entertainment, it is observed. Though at first thought it could be said that there is nothing wrong with it, on certain occasions it is understood that those who come to make selections of books find that they are stuck inside the sales outlet with inconvenience.

What most of the publishers said was that this book exhibition was the one that drew the biggest earnings in history. To meet the demand, certain publications had to be printed once again during the process the exhibition was in progress and thus made available to the would-be buyers.

"At parties ... almost everyone drinks no. Son is not to be blamed" -- Statement from Keheliya father

Parliament Member Keheliya Rambukwella the father of cricketer Ramith Rambukwella the latter of whom was taken into custody in Colombo for driving recklessly last morning after liquor has expressed his personal opinion by saying that he
sees nothing wrong in it.

What he mentioned was that his son Ramith Rambukwella's vehicle meeting with an accident in front of St. Bridget's Convent, Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo had not done any harm to anybody and because everybody takes drinks at parties he does not give the matter much thought to it. Expressing his ideas to a newspaper this is what Keheliya Rambukwella had to say about it: "Nobody suffered any harm from that accident. Nothing much of a damage was done to that wall. It is we who faced a loss. The other thing is ... if one attends a party, people drink ... some don't. I of course can't say that the accident is so much of a big accident".

Even previously too on the occasion when Ramith Rambukwella was drunk and went to the extent of trying to open a door of an airliner causing inconvenience to fellow passengers Keheliya father quipped smilingly in the presence of the media saying that mixing up doors is a setback which happens to most people.

Elder brother who went to give punishment to younger sister's lover ... ends killing both!

An incident where a schoolgirl died after being knocked down by a train in Ambalangoda area last July was reported. Subsequently the young man supposed to be her lover had committed suicide by jumping into a well, it was reported. An elder brother of hers as understood was inside the train and he came in between this
incident. He had said that after noticing the sister conversing with a lover of hers had promptly got off the train at the next stop and was rushing towards her sister when he noticed her lover pushing his sister to the moving train.

Nimesha this schoolgirl was to sit for the Ordinary Level Examination this year had carried on this affair unknown to her parents or anyone for that matter. A number of suspicions and doubts had sprung up over this romance had busted in this manner and when police investigations were underway, these two deaths were found to have taken place in different characteristics.

Deceased Nimesha's brother Tilak had initially told police this after the said incident: "I was coming in the train from Kandy. When coming like that in the train I saw a boy assaulting my sister a little away from the station. As soon as the train stopped I got down and when going towards that spot that boy pushed my sister towards the train which was coming in the opposite direction".

This is what the train driver said about the incident: "As usual because every day children going for classes at that time are found going around that place on the rail track, normally as a custom I drive the train somewhat slowly. When we were moving forward my co-driver showed me a boy with another boy holding a girl by the hand and how they came forward by the edge of the railway track. We said 'that it's their problem no'. And we didn't go to think about it much. Even before a minute passed we saw that girl running towards our train from the side of the road. What we thought was that that girl was running to get into our train. So thinking I slowed down the train. When slowing down the train by co-driver said 'it looks like there's no point now'. We stopped the train. Even by that time that child's life had been lost".

There was a variance between what Nimesha's brother said and what the driver said. Therefore the police once again interrogated Tilak. But then he changed his statement. "Because I saw my sister speaking to a boy when I was coming in the train I got down at the station and kept walking towards where she was. At that point after seeing me my sister darted. When running like that she got run over by the train. It was because of fear that I first said that the boy who was with my sister pushed her to the train".

Two days after this incident Sankalpa the supposed boy friend of of Nimesha was found dead inside an abandoned well near his house having jumped inside the well. His pair of slippers had been was found near the well and his dead body had been preyed upon by monitors. Upto that moment his home people had been searching for him for 2 days, it was reported. As such investigation reports were received to say that his death had taken place on the same day that Nimesha was run over by the train.

The police took some time to find the link between the deaths of both of them. When pursuing information across Sankalpa's telephone reports during the past he had left the place where the accident took place and had come back once more to the well referred to earlier, it was reported. Nimesha's brother Tilak who was responsible for a contradictory statement too had been to the said locations and had once again visited the place where Sankalpa was found dead. Under these circumstances Tilak was taken into custody and continuously questioned. On that occasion he had vomited out the frightening story of how he killed Sankalpa and put him into the well.

Tilak revealed that on the day of the incident he had admitted that he was coming in the train and had seen his sister holding hands with a boy and walking a little away from the railway station and had lost his temper on seeing his sister carrying on an affair with another on the sly and had rushed to the spot where his sister was with the motive of punishing both of them. Nimesha who was brought up at home in a conservative manner had shown a terrible fear for her brothers, it had been reported and had all of a sudden beat a retreat for the fear that the act of being in the company of her lover would catch the attention of her brother. At that very moment a train too had been moving and unanticipatedly she had jumped in front of the train. As a result she had died on the spot. Sankalpa too who was caught in the act by Tilak had brushed aside Tilak's hand and run away from the place.

Subsequently Sankalpa had gone to Ambalangoda Bus halt and had boarded the Batapola bus with the idea of going home. It was during that time that while the sister's dead body was lying at that spot that Tilak had been combing the bus halt with another friend in search of the boy who was instrumental in his sister's death. In the end he had noticed Sankalpa inside the Batapola bus and then Tilak had got into that bus in the company of his friend. But he had made no commotion as such in public.

Later, when Batapola was drawing nigh, Tilak who had approached Sankalpa had forced him to get down. Sankalpa who had got scared had got down from the bus and having been caught in the grasp of Tilak and the friend had gone in a three-wheeler to a jungle environment. It was after that they had been walking along a lonely road. Tilak who asked Sankalpa to stop near an abandoned well had then made him drown by saying "It was because of you yakko that my sister died ... I'll send you also to that world!" Subsequently Tilak had proceeded to Ambalangoda as if nothing had happened. He had even attended the final rites of his deceased sister and when his sister's lover's corpse was located 2 days later, he had expressed the opinion to those around and the police that Sankalpa would have committed suicide. Whatever it is, Meetiyagoda Police were smart enough to find out the whole story about this horrendous incident after 2 months. Tilak who pleaded guilty to the crime of murdering Sankalpa is presently under police custody.
