The new parliamentary sessions commences on the 01st Instant
The Secretary General of parliament announced the commencement of the new parliamentary sessions on the 01st instant at 9.30 a.m. The traditional 'MACE' was carried initially by the Sergeant at Arms of the
parliament by Wethradara Anil Parakrama Samarasekara carried the 'MACE' into the parliament premises but was not kept at the usual place as the Speaker was not elected and until then it was kept at a lower place where the central committee usually meets.It is a traditional for this as a Parliament cannot commence sessions unless the Speaker is elected. Subsequently the Secretary general of the Parliament announced to propose the Speaker to be elected.
The Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe proposed the name of Karu Jayasuriya while it was seconded by the Member of parliament Nimal Siripala de Silva.There were no other names proposed and no objections were raised and hence unanimously Karu Jayasuriya was appointed the Speaker of the new government.
As a tradition the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe and Nimal Siripala de Silva who proposed and seconded the Speaker to be appointed escorted to the speaker seat the new speaker Karu Jayasuriya.Then he Sergeant -at- Arms placed the ;MACE' at the appropriate position.
Subsequently the Speaker and the rest of the 224 new Members of Parliament made promises about their respective appointments as members of Parliament.Subsequently the president's speech was due to made at 3 p.m. and the deputy speaker and the deputy Chairman were to be appointed in terms of he agenda.
