A hat-trick by Rangana Herath against Australia! (video)

Sri Lankan bowler Rangana Herath was successful enough to claim a hat-trick against Australia in the Second Test played in Galle between Sri Lanka and Australia.

This in fact is the second hat-trick recorded as having been taken in a Test Match by Sri Lanka and the Australians who were exhausted because of this feat also in the process had to carve their name on the record books being
dismissed for a paltry 106, thus recording the fact that it was the lowest total they had made in a Test with the Sri Lankan team. When Rangana Herath was bowling the 25th over of the Australian innings it was in that over that he was able to achieve the hat-trick by dismissing Adam Voges, Peter Neville and Mitchel Starc. On that occasion though an appeal for leg before wicket was made against Mitchel Starc for the third wicket, the umpire had turned down the appeal and in that instance Captain Angelo Matthews had the decision checked by the Third Umpire after which the batsman was given the dismisal and on that decision Herath was able to record his hat-trick in the books. If Joint opposition contests SLFP will not know where to go-Prasanna

The Member of Parliament Prasanna Ranatunga had disclosed that in the event the joint opposition decides to contest in the forthcoming provincial council elections separately the Sri Lanka Freedom Party will not know where
they would be.

Adding further he had said that the SLFP is in this position because of their members who joined with the UNP for the 08th January presidential election.

Prasanna Ranatunga had added this speaking at a media briefing held at Udugampola. After the Pada Yatra not only the red baby elephants but blue baby elephants have got concerned. The amount of concern is such that they comment on the Pada Yatra in different ways. They have targeted the former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and the members of the joint opposition only.

After the defeats those who entered the government through the back door had compared Mahinda Rajapaksa to Prabhakaran. Such a story could be told by only by a third grade person. Adding further he had said that the General Secretary of the UPFA had quipped that it was the UNP who were very happy after the Pada Yatra. He has been wrong in saying that as the whole country was with us in the Pada Yatra and it was a challenge for the government. The government that is on the verge of crashing is been held back by the blue elephants. Finally he had said that when the joint opposition contests for the forthcoming provincial council elections the SLFP would have no place to go. That is certain were the view of Prasanna Ranathunga.

Story of how O/L students of Hantana, Kandy were intimidated -- Update

Story of how O/L students of Hantana, Kandy were intimidated -- Update

A group of students at an O/L revision academy at the Human Leadership Training Institute situated in Hantana area, Kandy sometime back were allegedly subjected to abuse and in relation to this incident the supposed owner of this establishment Chandimal Gamage and his business friend Nimal Peiris have been remanded by now.

Chandimal who has earned a name all over the country as an Advisor of Positive Thinking has been associating distinguished individuals in the country and has thus developed a credible image in public which anybody could pin faith on and has committed these crimes on the sly and by now his pranks are being revealed. A reputed business friend who is supposed to be a friend of his is connected to these activities for which evidence is forthcoming.

According to statements of the students, these children have been subjected to various sexual molestation on a number of occasions. Chandimal and Nimal have taken two students last Poya Day to a certain lodging house on the understanding of watching a Sokari Drama in their company. One of the statements so far recorded is that in this lodging place that day the two students have been embraced and in addition had been subjected to some sexual abuse. The students concerned were accompanied by teams of police officers of Kandy Police to the said lodging place and the latter have been able to identify the location. Apart from this an incident where Chandimal has taken two students to his friend Nimal Peiris's office at Katukelle in Kandy and had embraced them, was reported. On the occasion when another student had fallen sick, Chandimal who escorted her to a dispensary in the company of her friends had taken them to a shop and had tried to buy them underwear and had also put his arm round one student and thus tried to induce her for some misdeed, it was reporded.

The students were permitted to confront their parents only once a month and the girls were restricted to an environment where the telephone and going out was taboo. Under these circumstances they have had to bear up such restrictions. Since the situation was such, feelings of terror that they would become a prey had enveloped them. With these circumstances in the background they had been intelligent enough to flee from the place before they became a prey to Chandimal and his party who had been engaged in a boozing session last 31st.

Though this person Chandimal was about 36 years old, he had given the impression to the students that he was a young man of 25 years. Conducting a Positive Training Academy workshop he had won prestige in the area and had secured a fee of Rs. 140000 from the parents on the understanding that he would be strengthening those who was unsuccessful at the O/L. For this purpose he had maintained a hostel providing food and lodging for 6 months and it was limited for only female students. It is said that there were 18 students there. All students who studied at this hostel education institute known by the name of Human Leadership Academy was conducted at the address of No. 19, Thapodarama Road, Hantana situated in proximity to Kandy. They had come to know of the academy towards the end of last April and beginning of the month of May having seen advertisements in newspapers. What was done at the academy was a process of personality development of students who had failed at the GCE O/L examination and to conduct revision classes to equip them to face the GCE O/L Examination.

The students who were permitted to meet their parents once a month only had to do so in the presence of the hostel warden. Because of this reason even though the students were subjected to some improper consequences during the month which had passed by, they did not have the nerve to expose it to the parents so soon as such.

The hostel of the students was situated on the ground floor of a three-storied building. It is learned that the land in which this building stood was somewhat big in extent. There had been a large wall around it. As such no student was able to go outside the premises without the sanction of the warden. It was said that there were 2 wardens engaged in administrative activities of the hostel. On the day the last incident took place, which was on the 31st, there had been only 1 warden.

On this day in question Chandimal with his millionaire friend and some other colleagues had launched a boozing session at the hostel premises starting around 10 in the night. When the party was dragging on until midnight the participants had even forgotten as to where they were and had begun to jabber away. On that instance the students who were then in their sleep had overheard what they were speaking and had heard talks revolving around the topic of preparing to seduce these girls as well.

This is what one student said about it: "We know about Chandimal Sir. Because of that we were enveloped with great fear that day. After that, several girls who were among our friends started talking about Sir taking them to hotels. They said that their clothes were removed .... that such and such a thing was done. Some of those who were among our friends too began to say stories like that. When listening to these stories all of us felt that we were going to fall into a big trouble. We then discussed of doing something. After that in order to show that we were not isolated we switched on the lights of the hostel and began to laugh aloud ... to sing and shout. Some of our friends went to the kitchen of the hostel and took chillie powder into their hands. Some others took compasses in compass boxes while some others got hold of broomsticks as well as clubs into their hands. What we had agreed to do was that if anybody was to enter our hostel we would do whatever possible and escape thereafter. We had no faith in the madam (warden). Because of that we didn't look for her. Just then several of our friends quipped that the sirs may have heard our big noise and had gone away. We again got scared that something might be done after we go to sleep. By that time all of us were panicked. Then some of our friends suggested that we somehow make an escape outside and go to a nearby house and seek assistance. For that purpose four of our gutty friends came forward. The four of them managed to scoot out two by two".

They had approached a nearby house in this dead of night and asked for help. They were offered the neighbour's mobile phone to enable the girls to speak to the police and their homes at 3.30 in the morning and it was a certain neighbour who kept his attention focused until such time as parents of all the children came near the hostel. By about 5.30 early in the morning parents of all students at the hostel had come there. But the gates of the hostel were not open for them to go inside. Because of this the parents of the hostel had been banging on the gates of the hostel demanding that the gates be opened. However the warden of the hostel had declined to open the gates. The police had mediated at about 7 in the morning and had got the gates opened.

Officers of the Children and Women's Bureau of the Kandy Police had secured statements from the students on which occasion it was revealed that Chandimal and Nimal had utilised various strategies on these children and had from time to time escorted the children to hotels and lodgings and committed sexual molestation. 6 students of the 9 students who gave their statements that they were subjected to sexual harassment were produced before the Kandy Judicial Medical Officer while the other 3 refused the medical examination. The report submitted to courts by the medical examination suggested that apart from the students being subjected to external sexual molestation, there was no indication that they showed signs of rape as such.

The main suspect Chandimal Gamage after being produced before Kandy Courts was remanded last 4th until the 11th while his business colleague Nimal Peiris had forwarded a bail application last 2nd to Kandy Courts.

Story related in the company of wife Devika by Wijaya Nandasiri who left us

It was the 30th milestone reached last year 2015 in the wedded life of the couple Devika Mihirani and the ever so popular actor Wijaya Nandasiri who bade us goodbye today forever. The two of them on that occasion engaged in an interview talking about matters related to their past.

* You who never forgets the stage ... what are you doing these days?
This year, every weekend has been allocated for stage dramas. On some days there are stage dramas on Fridays also. Apart from that I take part in two tele dramas five days of the week. That is, the tele drama of Sarath Dharmasiri called 'Kinch gune' and that of Tolemy's 'Class Sinhala Class'. Shooting of two films in which I took part is over now. I have got an invitation for a film of Sugath Samarakoon which is to start next month. I am awaiting participating in it. This year I would be launching on a new stage drama.

During the course of this conversation Wijaya's loving wife peeped into the hall and cast a smile at us. Accompanying that cordial smile she addressed us in a graceful tone and then rushed in towards the house in an equally graceful stride hoping to prepare something to refresh us.

* Is Devika the unwavering handrail in your life?
Certainly yes. The wedded life of mine and Devika who stays by me as a shadow has now reached 30 years. She's the strength of my artiste-life. Devika who attends to all activities in the house and the duties of a wife ... is like my own life. Since she attends to all these tasks, what I have to do is only to pick up my bag prepared for shooting activities and step out of the house. I know that all things such as clothing necessary for me, items of medicine, things to eat and drink etcetera are arranged in that bag.

Wijaya Nandasiri who is at home during the few days after finishing those activities spends his time in great relaxation and it is with a great liking that he lends a hand once in a way for gardening.

* That's also a good exercise isn't it?
If I am at home reading newspapers and watching television is a part of my daily routine. And it is with a great delight that I water the plants in the garden. These things that I do ... instead of thinking it as an exercise I of course derive much exercise from the creative activities by engaging in acting.

Devika Mihirani who became a partner half-way through the conversation with Wijaya Nandasiri extended the dialogue about exercise in the following manner: "I of course don't need anything special to call it exercise because since our washing machine is on the third floor I have to go there three times a day. For me of course it's a food exercise.

* Do you feel a sense of loneliness because your son and daughter are not close to you?
Daughter Nawanjana is in Australia. Son Rasanjana in America. Since the two of them call every morning I don't feel they are distant. Because they speak over skype and because I take my dramas over there frequently we don't feel their absence very little.

Wijaya Nandasiri says this in view of the joy which wells up within him when recalling the children. Son follows his education in Aviation ... but he is very much in favour of the Arts. He has a number of abilities in the Field of Arts. After he went abroad he assisted us all aspects such as lighting, drumming, singing and acting. Even daughter can handle all this. What son says is that he would one day be like his father. Devika attends to all domestic tasks in the house. There's nobody to give her a helping hand with that work, it is a family custom to for her sisters to come over and assist her on most occasions. In the same way there's a wonderful habit she has.

* What is this wonderful habit?
What is mentioned in our Buddha Dhamma is to share our food. My mother and father too practised that righteous deed from my small days. What we were told was not to clasp .... to share and partake. It may be food, it may be some clothing ... a materialistic object. Sometimes I am someone who very much like to share love even by a word. What I feel is that the thing I gave was very sweet.

She has the ability of thinking about life as charming. Devika who cooks with thoughts like this in her heart is a wife who has special thoughts about Wijaya's meals.

* Wijaya Aiya ... what type of food do you like to eat?
Wijaya on most occasions eat red rice. In the same way I frequently prepare things like mellum, gruel and soup because he likes those. He specially shows a preference for village vegetables. But our two children like to eat in the Western style. Because of that food is being cooked in all kinds of ways in our house. I don't think it as a worry.

What Devika says is evident on her face. Wijaya Aiya who enjoys cricket at all times takes leave of us by making his way to the top floor with the idea of watching the World Trophy Tournament. At the same time Devika smiles at him saying if there is cricket he would forget everything. We bade this pleasant couple and stepped on to the roads with the idea of making our way to our office.

16 Nepalese females hiding in a house in Avissawella seeking migration ... nabbed

18 Nepalese damsels were found yesterday from a house in Avissawella and with this incident, information about a new kind of racket has been exposed.

As Nepalese females are prohibited from
securing domestic employment in the Middle East the racket is to send them to Sri Lanka on tourist visa and subsequently to send them for domestic employment to Middle East in the guise of Sri Lankans. This racket has been organised by a group of Indians while some Sri Lankans who practically assist them as representatives has been revealed. These females have been virtually imprisoned in a room of 10 - 12 feet in a house in Avissawella and they were taken into custody yesterday by officers of the Emigration and Immigration Department.

It came to be known that this group has been sent to Sri Lanka from Nepal across India. Clues about the racket first came into focus from an article published in a website of Nepal. What was mentioned there was information about a group of Nepalese females detained in a house in Bambalapitiya in Sri Lanka. After it came to be known, the Emigration and Immigration officers checked in various ways; but there was no such group in a house in Bambalapitiya. However it was learned that the officers have received a clue about such a group staying at a house in Avissawella. Under this situation they were surrounded this way.

According to investigations relevant to this incident it was found that Nepalese women have been sent to the Middle East on several occasions across Sri Lanka and it was further exposed that a number of locations have been used as detention houses. Steps are being taken to expel these Nepalese females back to Nepal and further investigations are underway.

Popular actor Wijaya Nandasiri breathed his last, last afternoon as a result of a heart attack. Wijaya who was subjected to a by-pass surgery long time before this was someone who also suffered from diabetes. Before suffering the heart attack yesterday he was in an exhausted condition. It was a result of having had to appear at a
performance in the drama 'Aluth Horek One' day-before-yesterday (Sunday). After finishing it he has come back to his home in Mt. Lavinia towards midnight. The following morning after waking up and having gone to the bathroom to wash himself he had been struck by this heart attack all of a sudden. At that moment it is reported that he had shouted out the name of his son. When he was crouching and holding his chest a relative lady who was in the house had rushed to his assistance and had tried to revive him by giving him artificial respiration. She explained later that on three instances the attempt failed and on the fourth attempt it had proved futile and that a sound of heartbeat was heard after which the sound had stopped. Subsequently he was dispatched to Colombo South Kalubowila Hospital within a space of about 15 minutes but even by that time he was lifeless. The Coroner Mr. Vipula Narasingha recorded the death as having taken place under normal conditions of heart attack.

Mr. Wijaya Nandasiri was 72 years old at the time of his death. Because he did not give up performing and had remained actively engaged in it and was successful in maintaining his attractive looks, most people were surprised at not being able to gauge his age. As Wijaya Nandasiri's son is in America and the daughter in Australia, until everyone's arrival is confirmed it was decided to fix a date for the final funeral arrangements and therefore proceedings in that respect were postponed yesterday.

Shown below are some last photos taken on Sunday at the drama in Kurunegala.
