Police didn't tell the media that Kondaya made a confession
Now it's too late to say that Kondaya was flogged
- Police media spokesman
Seya's father appears for DNA tests voluntarily
The incident in connection with Seya Sandewmi who was subject to murder has now become a topic
of a dialogue in society leaving a question mark about the police investigations.Though Kondaya should be a criminal according to 'Kondaya's confession', but as the DNA findings have failed, that story too has become a farce and it has become a matter of curiosity as to whose creation it was. It is because of that reason that a suspicion has inevitably surfaced in the minds of the public that this statement has been recorded after the police flogged Kondaya. As the 17 year old schoolboy exposed after being freed from remand that he was flogged, Kondaya may have undergone the same fate, it could be assumed. As a consequence of Seya's incident, the police have got involved in a terrible mess, so to say.
In the meantime what police media spokesman Mr. Ruwan Gunasekera has said yesterday was a different story. It is that though Kondaya had made a confession after he was arrested, it was not revealed to the media by the police as such. He said that whatever confession was made at the police it cannot be proved that he is a criminal but that if such a statement was made in the presence of a magistrate it would be legally accepted as a confession. When a question was posed to him that if in case Kondaya was to be released from remand and would say that he was flogged by the police, in that case whether an inquiry would be made in that respect, the media spokesman responded saying that it is too late now for that purpose. He pointed out that Kondaya has been produced in courts several times already and that if the police had flogged him he had the opportunity of saying that he could have stated so in those instances but he had not done so.
In the process, while the DNA reports of Kondaya's brother is being checked over Seya's murder, the father of Seya too had come forward for a DNA examination yesterday. According to what has been reported, he had on a number of occasions volunteered to present himself for a DNA examination in order to release his mind from the accusations targetted at him from during the time the tragic incident took place.
