I have done justice to my obligations- AKILA
The leader of the United National Party for the Kurunegala district Akila Viraj Kariyawasam after the sweeping victory of the UNP and a close fight when the UPFA led by the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa of the UPFA had with the UNP was extremely convinced that he had performed what was entrusted to him to the utmost.
As former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had been leading the election campaign in the Kurunegala district a special focus was made as how the two parties clashed in a battle that was to be fierce.
But ultimately at the time the election results district wise was released the final result was indeed unbelievable. The UPFA secured 08 seats while the UNP secured 07 seats.
However in the 2010 general election UPFA secured 10 seats while the UNP secured only 05 setas. What is significant from the point of view of the UNP is that with the advent of the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa the United Peoples Freedom Party have been deprived of 02 seats. What did the arrival of Mahinda Rajapaksa to Kurunegala district entail? A significant drawback to the UPFA.
In this respect the leader of the United National Party Akila Viraj Kariyawasam had this to say:
When he was entrusted with the leadership of the UNP of the Kurunegala district he made a lot of ploys and strategies to combat the huge challenge that was anticipated.
When he was told that he had received the number of preferential votes he was elated, which was due to the planning that was done to precision by his group. We were able to defeat the Kurunegala strangleholds.
