Murder of Hungama mother and pregnant daughter -- contradictory statements from daughter's husband
A 72 year old mother and her 35 year old pregnant daughter living in a house in Gurupokuna, Hungama, Sooriyawewa was brutally cut and chopped and thus murdered by the criminal concerned, last morning (02).
The deceased's husband of the pregnant woman is out of job and had set off from home to attend a
certain course of studies and had observed this tragedy on returning home. Almirahs in the house had been pulled about and cash and jewellery were found missing, he says. In this instance it is Yamuna Kariyawasam (36) and her mother Siriyawathi Kariyawasam (72) who were the victims of this murder. The deceased aged mother has 4 children and 2 of her daughters are overseas, it is understood. One of the sons happens to be Mr. Wasantha Kariyawasam, the medical health doctor of Sooriyawewa.Husband of Mrs. Yamuna Kariyawasam the deceased woman, Jayasingha Korale Aarachchige Sampath (36) had said that nobody else had been present at home and since he was following a course of studies on air-conditioning at Hambantota Technical School he had gone there in the morning and since their teacher was not present that day he had come back early yesterday and on returning he had seen his wife inside the house and his wife's mother, both murdered this way, the latter outside the house in the bathroom close to the house. It was reported that the deceased wife of his was pregnant and they had been killed brutally with sharp instruments. After he informed the police about the murder of the mother and daughter, police inquiries have begun.
People in the area have told police that they had noticed these two females in the house even at 8 in the morning. When the police had arrived and had interrogated the said husband. he had made contradictory statements, police say. Further interrogation is underway and police dogs had been brought there to find fresh facts. It was noted that almirahs in the house were disarranged having sought for something by the assailants and the police suspect that they had removed gold jewellery and cash that was there. The husband has stated that on that occasion there had been one and a half lakhs of money and gold jewellery of his wife. No one has so far been taken into custody over this dual murder, Hungama Police investigations reveal.
