A vehicle speeding along at Wijerama Junction in Colombo 7 last 26th Sunday had fled after knocking down a person in the process and as a consequence of a telephone call received by Kurunduwatta Police the victim concerned was dispatched to hospital; but had expired after that.
It had not been possible to identify the victim while those in the neighbourhood had said that he was a mendicant. Whatever it is, even until some days passed by the police were not successful in finding out as to who had fled the scene after committing the offence. Later on it was observed from CCTV camera footage around that a particular super model luxury-type Porshe car had collided with the victim and how he had got thrown above and had struck the windscreen which was smashed in the process and even more how the injured victim was not even inquired into and instead the vehicle had sped.

The police had checked all CCTV footage amounting to 30 in number covering Horton Place, Wijerama Mawatha, Town Hall and Colombo area, but had been unable to detect the number of the number-plate because of the rapid pace at which the vehicle concerned had sped. However the police have subsequently taken steps to secure the support of the Motor Traffic Department to extract the required data pertaining to owners of such Porshe cars because highly expensive cars of that nature which was of a red colour were few and far in between. On that occasion it was possible to trace such a vehicle which came under strong suspicion as one being owned by a person living closeby there in a house down Horton Place. Under these circumstances the police surrounded the said house based on the data so revealed. Thus it came to be known that the owner of the house was a Chartered Accountant as well as a millionaire businessman.
Incidentally, on being interrogated and being further questioned about the vehicle, he was astounded and on realising that concealing information about his vehicle was of no use, he had finally exposed the truth. He finally accepted his guilt to this accident and mentioned that the vehicle was now parked at a garage down Anderson Road, Attidiya, Dehiwala. Based on his revelation the police took steps to surround this particular garage and on that occasion it was found that the car was in that garage, covered with a cloth.
As a result of the accident the front glass of the car was found broken too. On minute investigations conducted by the police, strands of hair apparently that of the deceased victim plus some blood stains were detected among pieces of broken glass of the windscreen. The millionaire Accountant was ultimately arrested in connection with this accident and is expected to be produced before courts.
