Reason for Bambalapitiya schoolgirl's attempt to jump from school's bridge and commit suicide ... not clear

A 15 year old schoolgirl of Muslim Ladies College in Bambalapitiya                       has supposed to have jumped down from a bridge that connected sections of the school concerned, day-before-yesterday (15) morning and had sustained injuries in the act and was hospitalised.

The bridge is situated at a point where the secondary section and the primary section is connected and
it is understood that the bridge is of a height of about 24 feet. The schoolgirl is to sit for her Ordinary Level Examination this year. She has approached the bridge around 10.30; but her attempt to jump down has not been observed by anybody. However, a lady-teacher who had noticed the schoolgirl moaning after falling from the bridge has promptly dispatched her to hospital.

As a consequence of this accident, bones of her legs and on one of her arms were damaged and she has sustained injury to her spine too. Though the police have tried to take down a statement from her at the time she was warded in hospital, she has refused to make any statement saying that she is not prepared to divulge the reason. By now she has been released from hospital and is resting at home. The police have taken an interest to secure further information about her. She is supposed to be living down Torrington Mawatha in Colombo and her father is overseas and she is living at home with her mother and younger sister.

What the police say is that they suspect that she may have tried to jump this way because of some stress she has faced relating to her personal life or something that concerns the family. A separate inquiry is being conducted to ascertain whether she has encountered a condition of pain of mind over an issue where she had been treated offensively regarding an allegation by prefects of her school where she was allegedly involved in a case of some theft. The Bambalapitiya Police Women's and Children's Unit are continuing further investigations and a statement was to be secured from her last evening.
