When questioned why Ananda -- Nalanda schools clash went as far as a fight; student says "Don't know ... aiyyas asked to come!" -- had told police

As a result of the brawl which flared up between Colombo Ananda - Nalanda Colleges outside the school some days before, 6 were admitted to hospital while 10 were taken into custody by Maradana Police and 5 by Borella Police. Those so apprehended were kept in custody till night that day in
police and were released on bail after a severe warning in courts.

During the period they were under police custody, when their parents were summoned and an inquiry was held, what the police officers came to hear was a queer story. It was that most of those arrested were unaware as to the reason why they went to get involved in this brawl. Those arrested who in fact did not know the beginning or end of this incident and had responded by replying "So and so asked to come" and "That aiyya said 'let's go and hit them". Actually only two or three had known that this conflict had started because of a personal issue between 2 students.

What the police had pointed out was that these students had gone to the extent of damaging property almost killing each other, thus falling into the category of an underground gang, which is a serious tragedy. These youngsters however had no logical reason at all to behave in a manner that causes harassment not only to the school they belong to but to society as well. According to a wide-scale inquiry conducted by the police in this connection, it was revealed that all this commotion had started because of 2 volatile-type students in the school. The two of them had of course possessed the knack of gathering others for a fight and they have been found to have involved themselves in fights after consuming liquor during sports competitions between schools. As such, what the police advised them in the presence of their parents was not to listen to others and go astray and should behave in society as responsible individuals.
