Charitha's father ... distinguished radio artiste Ariyadasa Peris passes away
Singer Charaitha Priyadarshani Peris's father renowned radio artiste Mr. Ariyadasa Peris passed away this evening at Sri Jayawardene Hospital and he was 91 years old at the time of death. He was one of the most senior artistes attached to Sri Lanka radio. He is also considered as the first announcer of the commercial service and it is learned
that he directed programmes in Sinhala, English as well as the Tamil media.
Mr. Peris was someone who introduced a host of popular programmes such as, 'Adhunika peya', 'Pibidena Gayaka parapura', 'Ow .. ne .. be', 'Miniththuwak pamanai', 'Pena podi', 'Edeegen ahanna', 'Ambiga geethayen geethaya' and 'Nivedaka thorai'. He has also played the role of a doctor in the film 'Kurulu bedda'. A large number of artistes in the field of singing found the gates open for them as a result of programmes initiated by him for amateurs.
Singer Edward Jayakody who later became his son-in-law was someone who came to know him because of one of his programmes directed for amateur singers. Jayantha Perera the father of Chathurika and Purnika is a brother of deceased Mr. Ariyadasa Peris. Members of the family have notified that the final rites of Mr. Peris would be conducted at Borella Kanatta at 4 p.m. on Sunday the 12th. A documentary broadcast about him, from below
