We have not been made aware of the tallest Christmas Tree in Sri Lanka -- Guinness Records Organisation
Mrs. Amber Georgina Hill, International Media Officer of Guinness World Records Organisation has informed that no information has been conveyed to her in connection with the world's tallest artificial Christmas Tree erected by the Arjuna Ranatunga Sathkara Padanama in Galle Face Green, Colombo on behalf of the Christmas festival which incidentally gave rise to a big dialogue in Sri Lanka some weeks ago.
According to an inquiry posed to her by the Daily Mirror
newspaper, what she had said as her response was that "We came to know about this across news websites. There was information that it was a success. We are happy abut it. Even the application form published in our website had not been sent to us saying that that activity was brought to a close. We are happy to inform them in asking them to send it to us. After it is sent and on checking up all details well, we can consider forwarding a report".From last August till the end of December the volunteer manpower force connected to the Ports Authority had toiled to establish the record in Sri Lanka at an expenditure of Rs. 12 million. It had been announced across the media that they had eclipsed the record established by China who recorded a height of 180.4 feet by finishing the structure with a height of 238 feet.
On a request made by the Rt. Hon. Archbishop, construction of the Christmas Tree was temporarily suspended on which occasion those responsible for the erection held a media discussion and said that they had notified the Guinness World Records Organisation; but what is seen now is that such action has still not been taken. Whatever it is, even after having launched such great publicity and refraining from making an effort to clinch the record, leads to some suspicion.
What Thamira Manju the Media Spokesman of the Minister mentioned to a query raised by the Daily Mirror in this connection was that they had already sent the relevant particulars to the Guinness Records Organisation and had registered with them, but that as the second step only the testimony video tapes records have not been sent. They said that they are hoping to dispatch them in the future.
