Police news closed to private media after telephone call incident

Providing police information to private media has been suspended from last week consequent to the incident where a dialogue ensued with regard to the topic of 'Nilame not to be taken into custody' with Minister Sagala Ratnayaka calling Inspector General of Police Pujitha Jayasundera over the telephone at a public audience, creating a sensation all over the country, it is reported. As a result of this incident being focused upon by the private media, a talk surfaced within the parliament too and
finally the situation ended up with a response being called for in that connection. 

Police information being directed to the private media e-mail has been suspended from last 18th and in future, instructions have been received not to make invitations to the private media for any ceremonies conducted at police headquarters, it is reported. Whatever it is, this censorship has in no way affected the State media. The said decision has been taken at a meeting presided by the Inspector General of Police, the Deputy Inspector General of Police and several other staff officers, it was reported. 

A short time before this, activities of the Police Media Spokesman too were subjected to change under the new Inspector General of Police and after that, announcements of official news of the Police Media Spokesman too came to a standstill in connection with crime and certain incidents in the country and they were broadcast only on an irregular basis.
