"Nobody tracked me in Colombo" says owner of Hummer vehicle worth 2000 lakhs, after getting caught in Matara

A Hummer-type of jeep manufactured in America and worth over Rs. 2000 lakhs was halted by the police in Matara last 20th when it was being driven without a number-plate and the occupants were subjected to questioning. This vehicle which is driven from left-hand side was being driven on the left and there had been no indication on the vehicle which displayed 'left-hand driven' either, it was
reported.

When the vehicle was stopped and questioned as to where the occupants were heading for, the 3 occupants had responded saying that they were on their way from Colombo to Kataragama Devala. The owner of this vehicle happened to be the son of a proprietor of a well-known company importing vehicles to Sri Lanka while the other two in the jeep were friends of his.

When interrogated about the registration of this Hummer vehicle manufactured in America, without a number-plate and worth over Rs. 2000 lakhs the businessman's son had told the police officers that he has no intention of securing a number of the Traffic Department of Sri Lanka for this Hummer jeep. He has further remarked that this Hummer vehicle has been imported to this country from America a month and a half ago and that it is expected to be shipped to America in another one and a half months' time. He had shown temporary documents, documents pertaining to the release of the vehicle from Customs and temporary insurance papers to the police officers. According to those papers since the vehicle is permitted to be used on the roads for a period of 3 months, the police officers have taken steps to release the vehicle.

Whatever it is, they have been advised that traffic notifications should be displayed in front and at the rear of the vehicle according to regulations of this country since this vehicle is driven on the left-hand side and that this rule had not been adhered to by them. "I drove this vehicle for a number of days in Colombo. But nobody ever stopped me. This happened only in Matara ...", the millionaire-son had told the police.
