Retired Major General Kamal assaults Ordinary Level student of DS?
News had circulated last week about Retired Major General Kamal Guneratna who became a more popular character after having authored the publication 'Ranamaga osse Nandikadal' based on the contribution provided for the final battle that he had now threatened and assaulted a schoolboy.
Though a student had provided his testimony about it, the retired Major General has stated that it
false. This story spread around with a personal issue of an Ordinary Level student of Colombo D.S. Senanayaka College as its centre. This student who is supposed to have answered the first paper of the Ordinary Level on December 14th and was relaxing near the school at which moment the retired Major General had approached him and pulled him by the shirt and tried to assault him and had threatened, as told by him when giving evidence to the weekend 'Ravaya' newspaper.A few weeks before this a conflict had taken place between his clique of friends and another batch of friends after which a certain student of that batch had complained to the police against him and as a counter-attack for the problem this threat may have been the outcome, the student has mentioned. The student referred to has disclosed to the newspaper that the student who was involved in the conflict with him was someone who was related to Mr. Kamal Gunaratna and towards the end of the exam the Retired Major General had awaited to confront him and finally had pulled him by his school uniform in front of the school and had threatened him. Whatever it is, what an Old Boy of the school who expressed his ideas with the newspaper said was that there was a talk about this incident within the school too. Even then no action is being taken officially by the school in relation to this incident, he stated.
The Lanka Guru Sangamaya is handling this matter with interest and immediately once the exam draws to a close it was informed that they would make a complaint to the police as well as the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission.
This is how Major General Kamal Gunaratna responded when queried by the media: "It's true that my sister-in-law's son appeared for the Ordinary Level from that said school. I have come to know that a group of some children of the school have demanded money from him and have assaulted him. Even his parents have complained about it to Cinnamon Gardens Police. Other than that I haven't assaulted anybody. Never have I hit a child. When I was in the Army I haven't assaulted a soldier. If the information I have received is correct ... on that mentioned date, I was abroad".
