Students of Peradeniya Faculty who attempted ragging ... ragged by teachers in turn to teach pain of ragging

A state of some commotion has emerged because of an incident where a set of senior students had ragged some freshers who entered the Veterinary Faculty of Peradeniya University, in a very harsh manner and the teachers had reacted by 'giving the return' to the seniors. The seniors who engaged themselves in the ragging action on the freshers were summoned and representatives of
the disciplinary staff and the staff of lecturers had proceeded to subject them to similar ragging.

This is how the Student Association issued a statement describing the incident concerned: "For over a period of 2 hours the students were ordered to keep their arms lifted up inside the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the male and female students were made to kneel down and were threatened with acrid language with orders to portray various postures, being captured on video".

Later, 3 senior students had admitted themselves to the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital complaining that they were subjected to physical and mental pressure and had left hospital after a day. The Association informed that 1 senior student and 2 students were admitted to hospital and that they had undergone a serious mental shock. The Association allege that this return assault was launched by the professor in charge of discipline of the university faculty and a lady professor and a veterinary doctor in conjunction with 4 students of the final year and the association has looked down on this as an inhuman assault.

When making an investigation in this context it has been revealed that ragging within the Veterinary Faculty on a high scale had been in operation and that during the last 4 years 6 students have abandoned the course because of this ragging procedure all throughout the year on and off and as a result 90% of students who enrol with the Veterinary Faculty of the university have failed in the examination and that senior students hamper the freshers from continuing with their academic work in a proper manner, it was reported.

What preceptors who express their ideas in relation to this 'counter-attack' is that they were not responsible for any form of physical oppression other than advice. Whatever it is, an inquiry has begun by the Vice Chancellor of the University and as a linked-in support for this the professor in charge of disciplinary matters has installed another to take his place until investigations are closed. Shown below are photographs forwarded by the student association of those alleged to have faced distress from this incident.
