The Colombo Municipal and Otara Foundation has jointly launched a programme of planting 'Thimbiri' trees along the Colombo -- Thimbirigasyaya Road. Since it is of popular belief that the name Thimbirigasyaya was attributed to this area because there were Thimbiri trees at that time, Mrs. Otara Gunawardena the inaugural member of Otara Foundation launched this new programme by planting three
programme by planting three Thimbiri plants (Malabar Ebony) recently.

Otara Foundation expresses ideas in this connection saying "It is believed that since there were Thimbiri trees along the road from Narahenpita to Havelock Town those days this route has acquired the name Thimbirigasyaya. Whatever it is, at present, not a single Thimbiri tree is to be seen on either side of this road. Therefore, the Otara Foundation has got together with the Colombo Municipality and a programme has been launched for implanting Thimbiri plants in order to bring back the ancient splendour which once existed".

Otara Foundation is extending their support on behalf of programmes of the Colombo Municipality for the purpose of maintaining the City of Colombo as a eco- friendly city while Otara Foundation has provided uniforms for workers of the municipality as well. Workers of the municipality who were involved in this planting activity were observed wearing these uniforms. Otara Foundation combining with Colombo Municipal Council has already started a project of planting 184 trees indigenous to Sri Lanka such as Ehela, Modilla, Karanda, Kohomba, Takomaria and Kaha - Mara covering other regions in Colombo in order to increase the number of trees in the City of Colombo.
