Rosy's petition squashed by supreme court

Rosy's petition squashed by supreme court

The former Member of Parliament of the United National Party for the Colombo district, Rosy Senanayake was placed 11th in the preferential votes list of the UNP at the last general election. As a result she could not enter parliament. She has had points to prove that some of her
preferential votes had been accounted for candidates of the UNP itself.Hence she had filed a petition in the supreme court seeking redress.

When the petition was taken up for hearing the three bench judge panel led by the Chief Justice K Sripavan had decided not to proceed with the petition submitted by Rosy Senanayake as several representatives of  UNP's at the counting centre had signed confirming to the elections commissioner that all preferential votes had been counted correctly. On that certificate the panel had decided to squash the petition.

In the petition the commissioner of elections, the returning officer of the Colombo district, all Members of Parliament of the United National Party including the Prime Minister and the general secretary of the UNP had been named as respondents. The president's counsel Faiz Mustapha had appeared for Rosy Senanayake. Representing the Attorney General the deputy Solicitor General Henry Pulle had appeared as respondent for the state.
