Mother seeks school for her son, from the President

Sometime back a child in Kuliyapitiya was left hopeless because a rumour circulated to the effect that he was infected by AIDS and he ended up by not being admitted to any school. This incident created a big uproar and later the
President's attention was focused on the issue. Finally the problem was resolved with Trinity College, Kandy giving the child an opportunity.

Yet another mother happened to sit on the ground with a child in front of the Presidential Office in Colombo yesterday asking for a school for her child. This mother had said that her nine year old child by the name of Chathuranga Yashoda Goonawardena hailing from Mahawilachchiya, Anuradhapura had been rejected continuously by three schools and the right for his education has been barred s a result. It is understood that the child is blind in one eye and has a hearing problem in one ear. The child has been been cornered by schools where normal children were studying, treating him as a disabled child. No mention is made of an effort taken by this mother to admit the child to a school for the retarded.

The mother, Chandrika Goonawardena expressed the following ideas to the media: "My child was at Anuradhapura Siddhartha Vidyalaya till 2015 January. I removed him from that school because of an instance where the child was assaulted by a lady-teacher. After that I admitted him to Oyamaduwa Kashyapa Vidyalaya. After some days the teachers there said that they can't teach him and to take him to the school where he was earlier. In the year 2016 I handed him over to Bogashandiya Taxila Maha Vidyalaya. The principal there called me after a few days and told me that it is difficult to teach the child and to bring him to school for about 2 days, to familiarize him to society.

I came to Isurupaya from Anuradhapura and handed a letter on 2nd March. Since I didn't get a response to that I sent a letter by registered post to the Secretary of Education. But there's no reply for that even upto now. What I see is that my child is deprived of a school even in the year 2016. My child needs a school. Till that is fulfilled I won't budge from here". In this case the mother who forwarded the proficiency certificates to the media said that there's no problem about the child's education and that she sees no reason for her son to be rejected by three schools.
