Owing to intense heat Ethugala rock has cracked

It has been revealed that owing to the prevailing intense heat the Kurunegala, Ethugala rock has cracked in two places on the night of the 19th
instant.

On hearing this incident the Director of the national building and research organization.landslide unit RMS.Bandara had visited and inspected the Kurunegala Ethugala rock on the 20th instant.He had confirmed after inspecting the rock that the cracks had occurred owing to the intense heat that has experienced.

On inspection the Director RMS Bandara had observed the cracks were about two feet in depth and in the process scales of the rock had been scattered around the cracks.The cracks have stretched to  a distance of about five meters.The distance from the cracks on the rock to the Wyamba province office complex is also very short.

On the night  at 10 pm on the 19th with the cracking of the rock a huge noise had been heard like a rock in a quarry was burst by dynamite.This had been revealed by a person who is engaged in a small business in the close vicinity.

The people in the area who had been living for years had commented that like in this instance the cracking of the Ethugala rock was never heard. It is reported that 10 districts have been subjected to high temperatures in the recent past.As a result the people and wild animals have suffered without water.

It is also reported that in Hambanthota,Moneragala,Polonnaruwa,Kegalle districts and in addition in Anuradhapura,Batticaloa,Trincomalee and Mannar those without pipe borne water are finding life very difficult without water.

It is also reported that owing to the dry weather pipe borne water has been restricted.This situation will have to be continued until the monsoon rains expected during the month of May as predicted by the authorities of the meteorological department.This had been conveyed by the meteorologist Sajith Wickremasuriya.

The authorities of the disaster management department had added that owing to the dry weather 280 families and 935 persons in the Kegalle district have been affected.

From the reports received by the meteorological authorities the temperature at Nuwara Eliya had risen and reached 25degrees Celsius.The temperature in Anuradhapura district had increased to 36 degrees Celsius.

The temperature in Colombo, Kandy, Trincomalee and Galle districts had been 33 degrees Celsius while the temperature in Ratnapura district had been 32 degrees Celsius and Mannar district had reported 34 degrees Celsius according to the daily reports released by the meteorological departmental authorities.
