Torana owner in jail ....
for having issued dishonoured cheques to Angeline, valuing 8 lakhs!
Courts yesterday ordered that Mr. Sarath Kotelawala be
remanded until 18th of the this month in connection with a financial fraud of issueing dishonoured cheques to accomplished singer Angeline Gunathillaka.Torana Music which organized the music festival 'Angeline Live in Concert' which was held in last November had promised a payment of Rs. 10 lakhs for appearing in that music festival and after having paid an advance of Rs. 2 lakhs she had accepted the invitation and attended it. Once it was over, Torana Music had tried to settle the balance payment of Rs. 8 lakhs by issuing 2 cheques. When the said 2 cheques were forwarded to the bank, she was informed by the bank that there was no money in that account and that the cheques have been dishonoured.
When steps were taken to notify Mr. Sarath Kotelawala, owner of Torana Music about this situation, he had continuously kept on avoiding her saying that there is no possibility of settling the amount concerned. On this occasion Mrs. Angeline had lodged a complaint with the Fraud Detection Unit of Colombo last November.
It was in this manner that Mr. Sarath Kotelawala, owner of Torana was taken into custody by the Fraud Bureau. When he was produced before Colombo Magistrate's Court yesterday the Colombo Additional Magistrate Nishantha Peiris ordered that he be remanded till next 18th. In the meantime, he had been a suspect of yet another court case and had been evading courts, it was revealed in courts yesterday and Mr. Kotelaewla who is remanded in respect of that case has been called for a hearing on the 17th once more by the Magistrate.
