Usage of polythene restricted from January 01st 2016
The Director of the environmental ministry Anura Jayatilleke issuing a media notice to the general public had cautioned with regard to the government's decision taken to restrict the usage of
polythene from the 1st January 2016.The Director of the environmental ministry had emphasised on the environmental Acts of 1980 and the amendment to the Act in 2009 where the manufacturers of polythene had been fully made aware of the standard that need to be adhered to when manufacturing them. The Director also had reiterated that polythene should not be manufactured with a thickness of less than 20 microns.
He had also said that in future the ministry officials would be looking into this required specifications in polythene. According to the new laws enacted all polythene is not banned but only those which are less than 20 microns in thickness would be prohibited.
