Maithripala bring in a special cabinet paper to abolish Executive Presidency
President Maithripala Sirisena has added that tomorrow he intends to had over the cabinet
paper to the cabinet meeting on the abolishing the powers of the Executive President and the election system to be changed from the present preferential voting system to the electoral seat system. This had been told at a ceremony at which awarding of dual citizenship to migrants held at Temple Trees yesterday.The President Maithripala Sirisena had said in his speech at the funeral ceremony of the Most Venerable Sobitha thera had said that he would make all possible efforts to abolish the powers of the Executive President which was one of the main wishes the thera.
The President had further added that after the victory on the 08th January all needed changes for constitutional reforms were made. With the changes to the 19th amendment to the constitution several powers vested with the President were given to the cabinet of ministers and other institutions with the establishing of independent commissions. In addition a new electoral system would be introduced by the government soon.
During the Presidential election campaign what was promised like the powers of the President be vested with the cabinet of Ministers, establishing of a free judiciary and independent commissions were all adhered to. Talks have commenced on the matter of abolishing the powers of the Executive President by making amendments to the existing constitution. The needed special cabinet paper would be submitted to transfer the powers of the Executive President to the cabinet and other institutions had been discussed with the Prime Minister he had said.
